CHECK-IN/CHECK-OUT: Check-in time is 4:00 p.m./check-out time is 11:00 a.m. The home has an entry gate and a lock box; we send you the codes approximately five days prior to your arrival.

Numerous Hiking Trails:

Quick Hikes within a mile of the home, we have Shoemaker Nature Preserve. Five miles from our home is Chalet Nivale, Shaded hollows, vertical cliffs, rare plants, carved out by two of Ohio's cleanest streams. Both are easier excellent hikes. Fort Hill is a hike through a mature forest to the top of the ridge where a 2000 yr old mystery of the Hopewell culture awaits. Hike more intense Buzzard's Roost, or check out the Arc of Appalachia's site for more challenging hikes. And for the easiest of all, and maybe the best...Enter the Forest at the bottom of our drive. It is flat for 1 mile, and you rarely see anyone, just deer and turkey.

Recreation/Swimming:

Long's Retreat - fun for the whole family - swimming, canoe/kayak rentals, putt-putt, water slides, arcade room and much, much more!

Mineral Springs Lake - only 8 miles away. Swimming and lots of family fun!! We've personally seen their fresh water jellyfish - pretty awesome!

Shawnee State Park - canoe rental and fishing. Approximately 20 miles away.

Fall beauty

Beautiful, peaceful and private. Overall we had a great time. We were a bit disappointed by the Wi-Fi rules as they were not specified in the listing and the extensive DVD collection turned out to be less than 20 and most were from the 60’s and 70’s. Other than that we had a great time. Lots of fires and s’mores and reconnecting with family.

Private and Secluded

This is a beautiful home and property. We enjoyed all of the options - two fire pits, and two porches. Everyone in our group was able to find a place to be comfortable. The house was clean and the owners where very responsive. The kitchen was very well stocked with larger pans, and enough plates and glasses for everyone. We enjoyed hiking in the state parks in this area and even went to the Pumpkin Festival in Circleville. It was a very relaxing, and quiet place to reconnect.

Excellent stay!

We traveled as a group of 10 from ages 4- 60+. Property was clean and lovely. Everything was as listed. Owner was wonderful! Extremely prompt response time for our questions. Location was perfect. Lots of space outdoors for kiddos to explore. It rained the entire weekend, but we were quite comfortable inside and on the cozy porches .Would definitely recommend this property to anyone, especially families!

A great escape for two families!

Beautiful rural spot, perfect for two families to relax and spend time together. The house is lovely and the hosts were so friendly and helpful.

Poor cell service

When we arrived we had no cell service and were unable to check our phone for the codes to get on the property. After traveling to somewhere where we could get cell service(probably didn't need to go as far as we did, but it was dark and we weren't familiar with the area)we tried contacting the owners with no luck. We were however able to check the VRBO site and find where the owner's reply to my message from earlier in the day and were able to get in and enjoy our weekend. It would have helped if we were more prepared before arriving. After arriving the only complaint was the wifi restrictions and list of fines on the refrigerator that we would have liked to known beforehand. However we weren't planning on wrecking the place, so aside from the initial shock it had no effect on our stay. Nice place, but be prepared for poor cell service.

The Sanctuary

We appreciated our stay at The Sanctuary. The host was very on point with response times and providing "key" information. Easy check-in process. Host was very helpful with accommodation needs, providing good space for our family. Very nice kitchen, well-equipped and functional. Very clean with comfortable beds. Free Wi-Fi available, limitations on use, definitely a place to "unplug". Family certainly enjoyed their stay at The Sanctuary.

Amazing

This was a perfect getaway for myself, my sister, and grandchildren. There is plenty to do and see on the property outside in this perfect slice of nature. The home is set in a beautiful wooded setting with a nearby creek. Very peaceful. For rainy days, the house is very comfortable with plenty of space to gather together or have your own privacy. The kitchen is very well stocked and has all needed appliances. The owners communicated well and were a pleasure to talk to. You cannot go wrong with this rental if looking for peace and quiet and relaxation!

Just a house in the woods

This was just the right size to accommodate 7 adults. The house could use an update on the decor but it was clean, roomy, and a nice stay for the couple of days we needed.

As Expected

Lots of supplies. Nice to have everything needed in kitchen and bathrooms. No need to bring/purchase the normal paper products and toiletries. Kitchen very well stocked with everything needed to prepare meals as well us plenty of dished for eating and serving. All kinds of spices were also available. However, do not park close to house!! My car was damaged by a falling branch and now the door will not open. It was not windy or stormy, just woke up and there was a branch on the car. Make sure you park vehicle away from any trees!

Family time

We had a fabulous time staying at the Sanctuary! The house was perfect for adult siblings catching up with each other. Plenty of private space and plenty of space to spend time together! The house was clean, the beds were comfortable and was well stocked for cooking meals. It was very easy to communicate with the owners. This was our 3rd visit and we are already talking about our next trip.

Secluded, Quiet and Clean

Very Nice home with EVERYTHING you need. Remote area makes for a very quiet and relaxing stay. It was clean and very spacious. The front porch is a highlight of this place. Communication with host(s) is great and they are very responsive. We had a very enjoyable stay!

Very good

The scenery was very nice, having a forest just up the road made it so easy to go on hikes. The overall stay was perfect to be in the middle of nowhere and reconnect with nature. The only complaint I have is there is a limited use of Wi-Fi that isn’t said in the listing. Other then that it was perfect.

One day after work I decided to take a wooded road across the creek and toward the forest. When I reached the sign for the forest, I looked and the owner was putting up a "for sale" sign! What are the chances of that?? We love being able to provide a clean, relaxing atmosphere for people to get away and enjoy themselves. Life is too short and too full of stress these days; we're happy to share this wonderful place!!

The surrounding area is absolutely beautiful, and The Sanctuary of Adams County is literally the last house before entering Brush Creek State Forest in Adams County, Ohio. Flora and fauna are gorgeous - you'll see trees and plants here that don't grow anywhere else! The white-tail deer and wild turkeys are beautiful. It's also in Amish country, so you'll most likely see Amish buggies on the road. A rare gem indeed that you'll definitely want to visit!!

Nestled up to your own private forest, you can watch deer and wild turkey while you sip coffee on your covered porches. Check out Shoemaker Preserve, and Arc of Appalachia, also The Buckeye Trail at Davis Memorial Preserve for some great hikes. Miller's Amish Bakery & Furniture is only 16 miles away - you won't want to miss that!
