Beautifully converted Umbrian villas

The owners of this property have thought of everything for all ages to enjoy a relaxing stay at Sterlinghe with lots to do. Marcello and Ines look after it perfectly for the owners and visitors. If you want to get away from it all it is certainly off the beaten track so be sure to use their directions - don’t use satnav!

Perfect Getaway

You really never know what to expect when booking a holiday. Sterlinghe was absolutely a wonderful surprise. A magnificent spot hidden in the Umbrian mountains was exactly what we needed to reconnect with our adult children and family friends. There was room for everyone. Finding Sterlinghe was a little tricky and using the grid reference was helpful. Don't be put off by the dirt road because the destination is totally worth it! The rooms were clean and the kitchens well equipped. We loved having a private bathroom in every room. Lazy days spent at the pool and playing games in the cosy pool house was a perfect day. Ping pong, badminton and bocci were fun too. We loved it and we all want to return here to recharge again. Family Walters

Breathtaking Villa Sterlinghe

Villa Sterlinghe surpassed our expectations in every way, a truly magical place, which is clearly cherished. It has spectacular views in all directions; is thoughtfully and comprehensively equipped in a style sympathetic to the buildings but with every modern convenience ; has so much space both indoors and outside that it is possible for a large group (ours was 13, comprising 3 generations, aged 1-71) to gather all together or to be completely separate, relaxing in entrancing, beautiful surroundings. There are opportunities to be energetic and competitive eg the magnificent pool and table tennis, or simply to unwind, in a hammock or lavender scented nook. The pool house is a particularly wonderful feature and we made good use of its pizza oven, to the children’s delight. We are a family scattered across the globe and Villa Sterlinghe was the perfect, entrancing location for catching up with each others’ lives. The girls had experiences that they will always remember and the 6 year old summed it up for us all: ‘ I did so love my Italy holiday with all my family.’ It was a privilege to stay in such a beautiful place and we all hope to return one day. Amazing Views!

Let me start by saying that the pictures do not do Sterlinghe justice. When you walk through the gates the view just stops you because it is so beautiful up in the hills. We traveled with 9 of us and there was plenty of room for everyone without stumbling over each other. The rooms were spacious and each had its own bath. The best part which isn’t in the pictures on here is the new pool area. The ping pong table has been moved to the porch of the villetta and the pool house now is four walls with glass doors on 2.5 sides. The pool house has a kitchen area, couches and a table along with a stereo system with speakers outside too. The outside of the pool house has a very large stone patio that is stunning. It has 4 different sitting areas and a covered area with a BBQ and new pizza oven and a large stone table. We spent most of our time in the pool and pool house area. It was a wonderful surprise. The owners were very helpful and the packet they provided was very helpful, especially the directions since you have to use coordinates to find it on Google Maps. The owners also provided information on different activities such as catered meals, truffle hunting, bike tours, pizza chef, wine tasting, salami tasting, babysitting and a couple other activities. These are arranged by Cecelia who was wonderful to work with. We did the catered meal, the pizza chef and wine/salami tasting. I would recommend booking activities with Cecelia because is a wealth of knowledge about the area.

Thanks so much for your lovely review. Yes, over the winter we completely re-built the pool house and constructed a Boca court on the lower terrace. We have yet to put photos on the site, but it should be a nice surprise for everyone who goes this year. Many thanks once again and delighted you had a good holiday.

Mystical Hilltop Retreat

It’s hard to describe how deeply bucolic and beautiful Sterlinghe was for all of us. The owners have created something truly other-worldly. When we all walked through those wooden gates, each person was speechless...as if we’d found our own vast but secret garden. The most memorable moments of the whole trip in Italy were spent within the walls of this magical place. So many details... The pool house is sublime!!! We spent the bulk of our time together down there so joyfully! Could not have loved it more. The appointments were really well thought out...from the distribution and arrangement of the seating to the plastic outdoor glasses to the second dishwasher, and on. We used the badminton net, the ping pong table and the bocce court so much!!! The hammocks were particular favorites on the afternoons we were at the house. The night with the pizza chef was fantastic! The pizzas were delicious and utterly endless! We nibbled on the remains for the rest of the week. The main kitchen was beautifully and efficiently appointed. The plates and dishes, glassware, pots and pans were ideal and we put out some splendid meals, feeling for just a few days like a big Italian family in our own home. The bedding and beds were so comfortable. All of it felt very simple, luxe and elegant. Everyone slept perfectly. The gardens are incredible! We were all mesmerized by the scent of the lavender. And we cooked everything with the rosemary and thyme and sage and basil that was growing explosively all over compound. Honestly, does it get better than that?!?! I spent my 45th and now, my 50th birthday, at Sterlinghe. And I will go back as often as I can!

Simply perfect

Sterlinghe was perfect for us - exactly the right layout for a group of 15 including 3 pairs of parents and a gaggle of teens and younger kids. Lovingly restored, stunning views, fabulous pool, a variety of options for large group meals (in the shade by the pool house, terrace, inside, shady side of the main building). We had a week that our kids will always remember.

A perfect Italian getaway

Sterlinghe was the perfect setting for getting together family and friends in a long awaited holiday. The setting is stunning — even more beautiful than the pictures show. And as noted in other reviews, there are numerous places to gather or be alone. Some favorite spots were morning coffee outside of the 1st floor loggia looking out over the landscape and property, as well as evening cocktails on the couches down by the pool house. The smell of lavender and the sounds of happy bumblebees and cicadas provided the perfect backdrop throughout the day. The place is set up for large groups and we ate all of our meals outside at one of the three large tables, depending on mood and temperature. We perfected our pizza making skills in two sessions with the pizza oven and had a delicious catered meal one night courtesy of Daniela and her chefs. While some ventured further afield, there was plenty to explore in Citta di Castello — we particularly recommend the two Fondazione Burri locations for anyone interested in modern art (and even those who don't think they do might be pleasantly surprised!). The work was stunning and such a treat that it was right nearby. There was a heatwave in Italy while we were there, but you wouldn't know it at the house — the rooms stay cool if closed up during the day, fans are kindly provided in each bedroom, a breeze comes through over the hills, and the pool is there for a quick cool down. And there is plenty to do — in addition to swimming, we played lots of ping pong and bocce — but it's also the perfect place to lounge with a book or catch up with people's lives after so long apart. We may all be back home now, but the memories of this very special place and our fabulous week there will live on. Thank you to Vicky and her team for exceeding our expectations!

We had the most wonderful week at Sterlinghe. The photos on the listing really don’t do it justice. The house has been beautifully done up with every bedroom as lovely as the next and amazingly comfortable beds! The pool house makes the villa more special than any other villa I have ever stayed in with breathtaking views across the mountain and not another house in site for miles. Again it has been so tastefully decorated and brilliantly equipped with pizza oven and bbq and comfortable seating. We would definitely come back to Sterlinghe and explore the surrounding area as we barely left the villa this time it was so hard to leave!

Belle maison principale, maison d’invités très sympa et pool house parfait

Nous avons adoré notre séjour. Les photos ne rendent pas justice à la beauté du lieu !! Superbe paysage, et pool house extra de jour comme de nuit pour nous réunir tous. Une maison d’invité parfaite pour les amis de nos enfants puis notre famille. Un sans faute pour cette location qui nous a fait passer un séjour parfait que nous vous recommandons.

Magical Week

We spent a week at this magical villa celebrating our 50th anniversary with all our children and grand children. There were 15 of us total. The villa was well equipped for a large group and there was plenty of space for everyone to sit quietly in solitude as they soaked in the beauty. The pool and the pool house were wonderful to enjoy in the hot afternoons. We spent most of our time there after long days of excursions. It was truly a magical week! We hope that someday we will be able to return!

Wonderful property in stunning part of Italy

Our family of 14 stayed at Villa Sterlinghe for two weeks. It is paradise . There is a wonderful sense of space, luxury accommodation, a large pool which was constantly in use and the scent of lavender in the beautiful gardens every morning and evening. It is remote with fantastic views which is part of it’s charm but it’s also within easy reach of many beautiful villages and towns. The staff we met were very helpful and did a great job in maintaining the property.

Stunning Tuscan villa

Our family and two others (6 grownups and 6 children) have stayed in Sterlinghe for one week mid July. It was heaven on earth. The house is absolutely magical: you live in an old Tuscan style house but have all the amenities of a modern home. The impeccable white bed sheets, the scent of lavender in every room, the high ceilings and shutters which even in very hot days kept the house noce and cool. The pool was perfect with the sunbeds. The pool house was our favorite place to sit in the evenings listening to either cicadas or to music on the stereo (its in the house). The grounds are big but you can grasp the size and not feel overwhelmed and the position of the house atop the hill - gave us not only superb views of the valley but also a cool breeze which lowered the July temperatures down a bit. We really enjoyed the pizza evening which was organized by Cecilia. Thank you Vicky - you gave us beautiful memories of our 2018 vacations.

A wonderful holiday villa

Sterlinghe was the perfect place for a get together of friends and family from afar. Loved everything about the villa, from the generous accommodation, to the pool, the garden and the playroom for young children.

Perfect!

Beautiful property. The pool was great and the pool house was fabulous. We spent most of our time together in the pool house. It has lovely views and was a wonderful place for gatherings. The rooms were very nice each with its own bath. The kitchen was a joy to cook in. We all loved it.

A magical Villa that made amazing memories for us

We were three families staying over a period of two weeks in July 2016. This Villa is amazing! If you are thinking of booking, don't think, just do it, you will be so delighted you did. Sterlinghe is truly beautiful, everything you need is provided, every room is done to a high standard, the space is large, many places to gather as a large group, or you can choose to go somewhere quieter and not be disturbed. All of the rooms were large and spacious, all with ensuites. The main bedroom was sensational and felt more like an entire apartment. The pool is perfect, the outdoor cabana style area is another wonderful place to have lunch, a BBQ or just relax with pre dinner drinks. Our group made many memories at Sterlinghe and we will be back. Thank you to Vicky for being so responsive to anything that was needed. Your Villa is perfect! We would recommend Sterlinghe to anybody wanting an outstanding vacation in Italy.

great villa in agreat location with great views

We very much enjoyed our week at Sterlinghe. It is a beautiful, spacious, well-furnished and well-equipped villa with great views over the Umbrian hills. There are so many different places to sit and eat or enjoy the peace and relaxation. Or you can be energetic and play in the big swimming pool which was a great hit with the children and grandchildren. The photos show a lovely place but you need to go there to appreciate just what a special place this is.

Simply stunning

The reaction of everyone in our party as we initially walked through the gates says it all really. The house and the views just took our breath away. We just could not believe we were staying in a place as beautiful as this. The house has been lovingly restored, there really isn't anything more you could wish for. Every little detail has been so thought through by the owners, this really was appreciated by all. The beautiful pool and pool house was our favourite place- and where we spent the majority of our time. Thank you for a wonderful stay, we will be back.

Hilltop retreat

A dozen of us spent a week in September in Sterlinghe and everyone loved it - appreciating the peaceful isolated location high up in the hills and the very high standard of accommodation. It's rural and rustic but with luxury where needed - cotton sheets, soft pillows, comfortable beds, well equipped kitchens, and lots of spaces for people to sit individually or chat in groups... and enjoy meals in a variety of locations. The owner is very friendly and helpful and the standard of cleanliness is exemplary - we'd all highly recommend it.

An Italian Idyll

This is a property and setting of exceptional quality and feel. Beautifully restored, carefully equipped, the two houses and the large well managed and mature gardens marry happily with the remarkable 180 degree views of the forested hills and valleys folding many miles into the far distance. An outstanding Pool House, the outdoor kitchen, (just check out the photos) the elegant swimming pool, the Boules court, the lawns, the deep calm, the sheer peacefulness of the place work their magic from the moment you enter the lovingly crafted garden doors. The accommodation, comfortable, spacious, unstinting in its welcoming feel, matches everything else. Our family gathering of fourteen, across three generations, was wowed from the start. Sterlinghe is beguiling. Nothing less.

Totally relaxing and gorgeous family holiday

A triumph of a holiday, 2 families including 6 teenagers. The location is spectacular, remote and quiet down a sometimes bumpy sometimes tarmac track. Photos do not do justice to this idyll!! The owners have put a huge amount of thought and care into every little detail and comfort. It is fantastically well equipped, the best we have come across after many years of renting villas/holiday homes and gites! The new pool house complete with BBQ and pizza oven as well as lots of comfortable seating/eating areas both in sun and shade has added to the delight of staying here. There is masses of room if you want to be convivial or you can sneak off to innumerable quiet spots for a siesta on a hammock or a comfy chair. We will be paying Villa Sterlinghe another visit next year.

Absolutely perfect

We had a amazing week at the house it was even better than the pictures. The rooms are nice and big, and plenty at room in the living area. Don't forget to sit at the pool house with wine and local food while you watch the sunset We where 6 adults and enjoyed every minute of it and will be back next year!

Fabulous home in beautiful Umbria

We had a fabulous time at Sterlinghe and completely fell in love with the place. It was perfect for our 4 families to enjoy together and use as a base to go for walks nearby, even the odd run and travel further afield. It felt like a real home from home. We even managed to get a local taxi company to come and collect us from the villa in their minibus for a couple of meals out in the evening. Having said that the kitchen was so well stocked with equipment that we also enjoyed cooking and making the most of the local food and drink. The weather was good to us most of the time and a couple of the evenings were cooler so we did make use of your lovely blankets as we sat outside, enjoying the view. The directions were perfect and were a welcome addition to the sat nav – particularly the detail about the change of roads and the faith it was the end of the rough and ready road.!! Guest towels and beach towels were very welcome to reduce the weight of the suitcase, as were the hairdryers! We were 8 girls in total – so very much appreciated. A fabulous house, with a great central location perfect for visiting beautiful historic Italian towns. The house is well equipped to keep all of us entertained and relaxed, resulting in a happy, memorable holiday. Highly recommended.

First Class

We are all home safely after a very enjoyable week at Sterlinghe. You have everything very well organised and fitted out. The kitchen has everything and the pool is the best we have experienced. The table tennis and badminton are enjoyable (and thoughtful) options. The weather was so good, we did not need to use the lounge or media room, but they are there and with more books, CDs and DVDs than anyone can need. Wonderful views in the evening. The Villetta was ideal for my son and his young family, giving them their own space.

Amazing Place!

What an amazing place to spend a holiday! Everything was just perfect and as described. The views alone are worth it all. Would come back in a heartbeat.
