Take in the beauty of the Mississippi River at this unique and tranquil getaway. The American House Inn is the oldest standing building in McGregor, IA. Built in 1854, this building is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and takes you back to the late 1800s but with modern amenities. Located just a stones throw from the River, across the street from Big Bouys Marina, Kwik Star and a block from the Sadie’s Sweet Ice Cream shop! You don’t want to miss enjoying all of the history and the beauty of this vintage gem! American House 1854 is listed on the National Register Historic Places. Many famous people have frequented the American House including former President Jimmy Carter and the legendary Mark Twain when he was in town doing a speech. Please note: This is a train town and we are located in close proximity to the tracks. some train noise should be expected and it’s amazing to watch them. We do provide complimentary ear plugs for your convenience.

Lovely and historical place to stay. Location was perfect for starting a stroll down Main Street or a quick walk to the convenience store across the street for anything you forgot. Sara and Ryan were very helpful and accommodating and we loved the bottle of wine from the local winery as a thank you! I plan on staying again as it was perfect for our girls getaway.

My husband and I LOVED our stay here! We rented the suite and it was AWESOME. I am a HUGE stickler for a clean room and ESPECIALLY the bathroom. IT WAS SO CLEAN IT SPARKLED! The bed linens were neat and clean and the towels were folded neatly and in place. I love the fact there were extra towels, hand towels, and washcloths. Our host made sure to send us activities that we could do around the area. And also left us a bottle of wine as a thank you for our stay. (Thank you Sara!)Just loved everything about this place. I rate it a 100 out of 100. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND

This is a very cool building to stay in. Lots of cool history! The view of the Mississippi River is awesome and the location is great for walking ti near by shops, restaurants and Kwik Star. We hiked local parks which had great views of the Mississippi. The locals are helpful and welcoming. Our host was attentive. House was clean and decorated nicely. Comfy bed. Highly recommended and we would stay again!

Staying at the historic American House 1854 was an unforgettable experience. The property beautifully preserves its history, while offering modern comforts. Every aspect of our stay exceeded our expectations. The rooms were immaculate, comfortable, and full of charm. Communication with hosts, including directions, was terrific. The location was perfect for exploring both McGregor and the surrounding area. We liked being able to walk to all the shops in town. A bonus was a book on a side table that shared past stores of the area, including one about American House 1854! If you’re looking for somewhere to stay in the area, this is the place!

This place is in town and close to shops and restaurants. The train tracks across the street are busy with freight trains, so that can get loud. Inside is clean. The kitchenette is small but has everything we needed for a comfortable stay. There is a large table and chairs in the main room with 2 beds. I found the main room to be a little dark, even with all the lights on. Overall, an excellent place to stay and the owners were communicative and responded promptly to messages.

This property was a last minute pick for us and it did not disappoint. It was very unique in it's decor but very comfortable and clean. Check in was easy! There are many places to eat in the surrounding area and a great location in regards to area attractions!

This was a very nice property. It served our needs as we were in the area for a quick get away with the family. It is a quaint little town right on the Mississippi. Would definitely stay there again if we head back in the same direction. Very responsive host with any questions we had.

Loved it!

We very much enjoyed our stay! Beds were comfortable and the update to the bathroom was beautifully done. The location was perfect for our Annual Girls Trip. Great for exploring Pikes Peak and Wyalusing. McGregor is a charming little town with food options and a cute new coffeehouse, The Brim. Communication with Sara was prompt and pleasant. Would recommend and will likely stay again!

Bachelorette party

We stayed for my twin’s bachelorette party and had the best time. The layout of the rooms were perfect to relax and hang out all together. It was walking distance to all the shops and bars and river access across the street and had plenty of parking. We had a great time!

It was a very nice girls’ weekend stay for 3 older ladies. It’s a very old property, so as you might expect, doors could be a little hard to open, etc. Typical old house things that come along with the charm of an older building, but all 3 of us live in older houses, so it wasn’t unexpected. Everything we needed was supplied, and it was a short walk to a variety of restaurants and a convenience store. I would definitely recommend it.

Our host was excellent to work with - we had an issue with the lock on the door and she was very responsive with helping us solve the problem. The location to downtown was perfect for my husband and I walking distance to every shop. We would have liked to stay longer. We enjoyed looking through the guest registry and reading about the history of the house.

Fantastic location and cool history!Beds and bedding were comfortable. The bathroom was fantastic! Lots of towels too!Only downside is it is hard to get airflow in there.And the table in the 2nd room (with 2 queen beds) is hard because the lighting isn't strong in there.We knew this in advance - its a kitchenette, not a kitchen! The counter ice machine was really helpful!We loved it and will be back!
