I am glad you enjoyed your stay in Cape Breton and were able to see many of the fantastic spots I referred you to in our orientation meeting. I am sorry however, that you did not read your VRBO correspondence or my Agreement, which has your dates in large, boldfaced print on the first page. You were also told, in writing, about the change of dates and Changeover day BEFORE you made your official VRBO Reservation Request. You initially contacted us during our 2022 season, before we opened official bookings for the 2023 season. In that interim, I put you on a tenative list (with your desired cottage and dates) for guests who want to book our next season through VRBO. This list is often in flux, with guests changing dates /cottages (as you also did) before they make an official VRBO reservation, or make a deposit. It is also a time I can make final changes to cleaning-staff scheduling. While you were on the wait list, you took advantage of its flexibility, changing your desired Stay Dates from August/ September, to July. You also wanted to bring your aging dog, which I bent over backwards to accommodate, given our standard “no-pets” policy. On October 28, I advised you on VRBO to make your Reservation Request through VRBO: “Tomorrow, you should submit a Reservation Request for this cottage for the dates July 23-30. This cottage changes on Sundays Only this season, due to cleaning staff schedule. If you have any further questions, just let me know.” So, you lay the blame on us for a “snafu” / or failure to notify you, but the reality is that you didn’t really read your VRBO correspondence or my Reservation Agreement, with the changeover days AND dates highlighted on the first page in LARGE, BOLDFACED PRINT. In other words, you were notified about the revised changeover days / dates all along, even before you made your Reservation Request. You then made your VRBO Request, and we finalized the booking. It is not clear why you might make travel arrangements BEFORE you finalized your reservation (never a good idea!) or made a deposit. If you made travel arrangements based on inattention to VRBO correspondence or the lease you signed, that is a real shame, but not our fault. Either way, after what you say was a great trip which was enhanced by the cottage and our orientation meeting, it’s not very fair for you to lay your extra cost, inconvenience and loss of a vacation day at our cottage at OUR feet, when we really had nothing to do with it!
