The House
Casa M is in Tajamares de la Pedrera, Rocha, Uruguay, a community with 80 hectares of meadows, native woods, and small ponds/lagoons (tajamares). 

Tajamares de la Pedrera is 10 minutes by car from La Pedrera, 40 minutes from Pueblo Garzón and one hour from Jose Ignacio. 

The house sits on a 5000 m² elevated plot with a main house of 254 m2, offering impressive views of the sea and the surrounding fields. The property also benefits from a small private eucalyptus wood creating an atmosphere of natural tranquility.

With a modern, contemporary, minimalist architectural design, this highly functional house is notable for its integration of the surroundings with a clean, modern aesthetics. The elongated horizontal structure is placed on elevated concrete stilts, allowing the house to adapt to its surroundings and enabling air circulation in and under the living quarters. This modern design also minimises the ecological impact of the building.

Large floor-to-ceiling windows allow natural light to flood the living quarters as well as provide panoramic views over the surrounding landscape and the sea. This connects the interior of the house with the surrounding landscape as well as minimising energy consumption. Full length curtains help control the light and allow for the creation of privacy. The design considers the movement of the sun and playful decorative elements are introduced as it moves in the sky during the day.


The concrete structure expresses a modern aesthetic, with straight, simple lines. All architectural elements are functional within the minimalist aesthetics typical of modernist architecture, while the Brazilian trumpet-wood used for fittings provides warmth and a connection with the surrounding nature. The living, cooking and dining areas offer an open plan design, creating fluidity between the interior and exterior space, connecting the lived experience within the house with the surrounding nature. 

Outside, the house offers a swimming pool of 12 m by 3 m (usable between December and March), a sun-bathing area, a barbecue area which includes a wood oven as well as dining facilities, and a space for drying clothes.

Parking for two cars is provided in a covered area under the house.

The estate offers a range of services creating a heightened experience for guests, including a tennis court, small lakes for rowing, and a common living area with table tennis facilities.
