Harkers Island Haven-waterfront, private beach and dock
Charming Waterfront Haven in Historic Harkers Island!
Welcome to your ideal getaway with a serene and picturesque view of Cape Lookout, the Lighthouse, Shackleford Banks, and the Sound. The three bedrooms can easily sleep 7. Features include a dock (no ramp) for all your water activities, private sandy beach, expansive water views and stunning sunsets. This home has a fireplace in the great room with doors that flow to the balcony. The master bedroom accesses the balcony for romantic time with stunning views. The bottom floor was converted from a garage to an entertainment room and features a tiki bar, comfortable seating, and a TV. You can open the garage doors to let in the breeze and easy access to your private beach. Teh entertainment space includes an outdoor shower, half bath, refrigerator, and dining table and chairs. We allow small dogs under 40 pounds for a daily fee.
House features plenty of parking, enough for multiple cars and a boat trailer. In the heart of Harkers Island there are wildlife boat ramps or use Cape Point Marina that offers fuel, boat ramp, and slips. The Marina charges a minimal $15 to put your boat in and out and if you want to leave it in the water, it is only $15 to rent a slip.
Harkers Island has the Island Express Ferry Service that is the shortest ferry ride to the park. Pack your lunch and beach gear as this ferry will take you to Cape Lookout National Seashore, offering passenger and vehicle ferries to various locations. The ferry service is the primary way to access the islands and beaches within the park, including Cape Lookout Lighthouse and Shackleford Banks. During the ferry rides, you may spot wildlife like dolphins, wild horses on Shackleford Banks, and various bird species.
The Southern Outer Banks is calling you to visit and enjoy all that it offers.
Below is the History of the Cape Lookout Lighthouse:
The current lighthouse was built in the late 1850s, and is the second lighthouse to stand at this isolated spot along the National Seashore. Replacing an 1812 lighthouse that only extended 96’ ft. tall and was therefore ineffective for mariners well offshore, this “new” 1859 structure reached 163’ ft. into the sky, and was outfitted with a first-order Fresnel lens which allowed the beacon to illuminate the region. The ensuing 12-19 mile range of the light was essential, as Cape Lookout is adjacent to shifting sandbars and massive currents, and as a result, serves as the final resting place for centuries of shipwrecks.
Though it officially went into operation in 1859, it wasn’t painted its distinctive diamond pattern until 1873, which distinguished it from other lighthouses along the Outer Banks. (In fact, if it wasn’t for the different patterns of paint, the Bodie Island Lighthouse in the Northern Outer Banks and the Cape Lookout Lighthouse would be nearly identical.)
