If you are arriving after dark, please let us know in advance so we can turn on exterior lights for you.
Scenic 486-acre ranch with cliffs, rolling hills and hiking trails. Bluebonnets and other colorful wildflowers abound in this area in the spring. Chart your own course or use the ‘Bluebonnet Trails’ guide to map a route. www.bluebonnettrail.org
Go left or right from our main road, Lazy H Rd, and in 9 miles be cooling off in the Llano River. An additional 9 miles to the left and you can explore the historic town of Mason. This small town has plenty of history and two local museums. Antiques, collectibles, boutique clothing, or just plain ‘stuff’ can be discovered in multiple shops in and around the courthouse square. Tour the restored 19th century Hill Country landmark, Seaquist House, and historic Fort Mason which was established in 1851. The longest continually operating theater in West Texas, the Odeon Theater built in 1928, continues to show first run films (ticket price usually $4!), classic movies, live music concerts and performances (ticket prices vary).
Mason town square houses a number of dine-in and take-out restaurants; the historic Willow Creek Café & Club, known for their year-round seasonally decorated holiday trees and Texas-size Chicken Fried Steak, serves American fare, Joe’s Italian Restaurant, Cooper’s Original Pit Bar-B-Que, Nacho’s Café and Agave Jaslico serving Tex-Mex, Santos-The Silerio Family Restaurant specializing in Toquitos, Rico Café (Tex-Mex breakfast & lunch only), James River Icehouse, and pizza at THC Beer Company and T. Bo’s Bar and Mercantile.
The Eckert James River Bat Cave, one of the largest bat nurseries in the country with a population of 4-6 million Mexican freetail bats, is located about 20 miles from Mason. Open from mid-May to mid-September an evening watching the bats fly out to hunt is an incredible experience.
The entire Central Texas area is home to award winning Texas wineries and cozy tasting rooms where you can lounge and enjoy the best of Texas wines. Check out the offerings in Mason at Robert Clay Vineyards Estate Winery, Murphy Creek Cellars, Sandstone Cellars Wine Bar, Parr Vineyards & Cellars, Fly Gap Winery, Peters Prairie Vineyard, and Blackmon Wines. For the Craft Beer lover visit Bear King Brewing Company or THC Beer Company.
Fast food options include Subway, Dairy Queen (every Texas town has a DQ), Laredo Taco Company, Mason Sno-cones, and Mason Donuts. Excellent coffee and pastry can be found at La Copa Joe’s.
The German town of Fredericksburg is 1 hour down Hwy 87. Often referred to as the heart of Texas Wine Country, Gillespie County boasts over 75 wineries, vineyards, and tasting rooms. Fredericksburg is also known for great antique and boutique shops, wonderful restaurants, multiple festivals, and small-town Texas charm. This historic destination is not to be missed. Fredericksburg is home to three amazing museums: National Museum of the Pacific, Admiral Nimitz Gallery and the Pioneer Museum.
Kerrville is also nearby at 1 hour where you can kayak or paddleboard on the Guadalupe River, visit a nature center, or picnic on the riverbank in Schreiner Park.
Nearby Junction (27 miles) is listed among the top one-hundred disc golf courses in Texas with three 18+ hole courses. Junction is also home to South Llano River State Park with kayaking, tubing, hiking, and fishing.
Legacy Ranch is 486 acres of semi-rugged central Texas hill country. Numerous trails and hunting roads lead through the property to beautiful overlooks, ancient streambeds, and hidden creeks. You may collect rocks, etc. without disrupting the natural area. Maps are provided in your cabin and on the wall at the Rec Center. This is country hiking, wear comfortable, sturdy hiking shoes, take water, a whistle, and a map. You may see wildlife... road runners, squirrel, deer, snakes, porcupines, racoons, etc. For your safety, please DO NOT approach wildlife.

A stunning ancient oak tree shades the pool area and Recreation Center which are for the private use of our guests only. The pool area is generous, with enough room for a family gathering, including several large patio tables and chairs, and both a charcoal grill and a propane grill. It is conveniently attached to the Rec Center which has central AC/heat, bathrooms, a full kitchen with cooking and dining supplies, and a cozy seating area in which to relax. The Rec Center activities include a pool table, ping pong, air hockey, foosball, video & arcade game, card tables, board games, books, and corn hole.

The Windmill Cabin is located in the shadow of a vintage windmill and surrounded by the beauty of the Texas hill country. This two-bedroom, one bath cabin is open concept updated rustic with a generous living area complete with a smart TV and DVD player, a full kitchen with cooking and dining supplies, basic spices, K-Cup and drip coffee makers with coffee, 5-gallon water dispenser, and large dining table. Each room has a split unit for AC/heat. WiFi is provided, no password required.
Primary bedroom is generously sized with a king bed, armoire, and personal safe.
Secondary bedroom holds a queen size bed and two twin beds and a bench storage chest.
The attached patio area is perfectly situated to enjoy an amazing hill country sunset. Patio furniture provides comfortable seating while grilling dinner on either the charcoal grill or the propane grill. Lights in the mature oak trees surrounding the cabin provide a cozy ambiance for evenings outdoors or turn out the lights and be astonished by a glory of stars in an indigo sky. Firepit with bench seating completes the experience in this hill country jewel.
You will receive turn-by-turn driving instructions prior to arriving.
Dogs are allowed on Legacy Ranch with an additional pet fee of $50 per pet. Dogs are allowed in the house but not on the furniture. Please clean up after your dog if they “do business” in the yard. A dog enclosure is located in the yard under a shady tree should you wish to use it.
Smoking of any kind is NOT allowed in the house or in the Recreation Center. Please smoke outside, away from the doors. To keep our natural area clean and reduce the chance of a fire, cigarette butt receptacles are located on the porch and in the pool area. Please use them!
A fire pit is located on your property for you use. To minimize the risk of pests and infection you MUST purchase firewood from us for $20 per large bundle, if you want a campfire. Each cabin is equipped with smores sticks for your convenience. Occasionally, we will be under a county-wide burn ban. In that case, no open fires are allowed, however you may still grill.
