Norsk Hus offers the feel of a mountain lodge with the comforts of home, making it an inviting year-round base for exploring Mazama and the Methow Valley.
The Neighborhood:
Norsk Hus is located within the Wilson Ranch community, part of the Freestone Inn development. Freestone was established by Jack and Elsie Wilson in the late 1940s after Jack left his job on the Golden Gate Bridge. The Wilsons founded a twelve-acre ranch in Mazama, where Jack began offering guests hunting, fishing, camping, and packhorse trips throughout the North Cascades.
Wilson Ranch is just 2 miles, about a 10-minute bike ride, from the Mazama Store and the Methow Trails trailhead, which provides access to hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoe trails. In addition to the store, well known for its bakery and groceries, Mazama is home to the Goat’s Beard outdoor store, which rents mountain and fat bikes, the Mazama Ski School for cross-country ski lessons and rentals, and the popular Mazama Public House, offering local brews, food, and live music. Please note, the Sandy Butte Bistro at the Freestone Inn is not currently operating, and Jack’s Hut may be open on a very limited basis.
North Cascades National Park
Norsk Hus offers easy access to the North Cascades National Park, with a number of world-class hiking trails nearby. The Cutthroat Lake trailhead is less than a 20-minute drive, Washington Pass is about 25 minutes away, and the Maple Pass trailhead is roughly 30 minutes from the home. This prime location allows guests to beat the crowds and find parking more easily during peak hiking seasons.
Winthrop
Just 14 miles down the road, the historic town of Winthrop offers an array of shops, art galleries, and restaurants. Visitors can also explore local history at the Shafer Museum. Winthrop features one of North America’s only NHL-sized outdoor rinks, offering ice skating and hockey in the winter, and active sports and pickleball courts in the summer. The town hosts several annual events, including the Rhythm and Blues Festival, Vintage Car Rally, Memorial and Labor Day Rodeos, and Christmas at the End of the Road.
