Antique Salt Box Traditional Newfoundland House

This traditional Salt Box house has been renovated and is equipped with everything you’ll need. Antique traditional Salt Box homes were built with lower ceilings for heat efficiency and average height. I left the original height for the up stairs which is about 5' - 11' high, tradition and heritage is kept in this modest home. This home sleeps 4 people comfortably with two bedrooms, small living room with pull out sofa, a large kitchen, bathroom. I learned that the laundry machines are not working but will have them repaired when there are no guests expected. There is limited ocean view from the kitchen and master bedroom windows. Puffins can be seen up close from the nearby coastal cliffs.
Elliston is a friendly, small, out-port village that offers sea side hiking, deep sea fishing, whale watching, a fine traditional Newfoundland restaurant, an informative Visitors Center, and more. The main town of Bonavista, is about five kilometers away and boasts plentiful shopping, museums, pubs and a major harbor. The peninsula reaches out to the 'Cape' which has a spectacular view of high cliffs and endless ocean seascape. Bonavista is the historic site where John Cabot landed in the early 1300's.
In summary, The Catalina Road house is a modest rustic residence - you don't need to worry about bringing anything except your groceries! I hope you will enjoy a traditional Newfoundland experience!

Absolutely the worst place I have ever booked

This house was uninhabitable in my opinion. The online ad is completely inaccurate. There is no parking, laundry, wifi, working tv or even a bbq. It is not 90% renovated, that is just false. The bedspreads were thread bare with holes. I don’t mind old/vintage but that is not at all what this place is. It’s just run down and dirty. The final straw was finding the mouse feces all through the cupboards and linens. We didn’t even unpack. The locals in Elliston were absolutely lovely and tried to help us find another place to stay. They were beyond embarrassed that this place was for rent in their community. So far I have been given a partial refund, waiting on the rest. I have reported the condition on this property to VRBO and I sincerely hope that it is removed as a listing.

This house should be condemned

The claims made by the owner for this property are almost all fraudulent. Most of the appliances listed in this ad do not work. This property was listed as “renovated” however, there were no recent interior renovations noted. The property is uncared for, dirty and dangerous. The ad features a washer and dryer. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a note advising that the washer and dryer do not work. The washer is completely rusted inside and hasn’t worked in years. The fridge and freezer did not stay cold enough. This ruined all the groceries we brought with us as well as the cod I had caught! The main floor would be almost liveable but for the dirt and peeling paint. Upstairs was just gross. He described it to me as “rustic”. The rugs were at least 50 years old and filthy . Peeling wallpaper, pest traps full of bugs, broken furniture, no bannister on the stairs.

Disappointing

We were terribly disappointed with the property. The entire structure was beyond tiny, I get that it’s a “salt box” style home but it was not at all what we expected. There is absolutely no parking at the house, we tried to get is a far as we could from the road, ppl were tooting their horns at us because we were still partially on the road, we ran upon rocks with our vehicle trying to get off the road. The host sent me a code to enter the home, but when we got there the door to the house was rusted and decrepit. The key was under a rock next to a bucket filled with water and cigarettes butts and the door was secured with a huge rusted padlock. We struggle to get it opened, it looked like it hasn’t been opened for some time. Up on entering the house the smell of mould and dampness took my breath away. We walked through the house and the entire house was uninhabitable in my opinion. We didn’t even unpack, we move to a hotel. The worst of it is I’m out over $400 dollars. I wish the owner would visit his property and update it, make it livable and safe. I will never recommend this listing to anyone.

Neglected welcoming and felt scamed.

Bath plumbing leaks and water flows downstairs in kitchen cabinets and ceiling. Despite having aware the owner the situation hasen't been fixed. The situation was knew by the owner prior to our stay. He said he thought it was repaired. It seems he never make sure with it. We've been promised to have it fixed for our second night and to have a discount to compensate this inconvenience. None of both done. Still waiting news from the owner despite messages left since we're back home. Also, neglected cleanliness, particularly the carpets.

Great views

This place is in a great location. Excellent views, and Elliston is so beautiful. The salt box was cute but there was some odd things - a tv that couldn’t reach the plug in, some not so comfy beds. It could have been cleaner. And there was no wifi, or cell service. That being said, we did enjoy our stay and are so so glad we had a place in Elliston. The people were so kind and the puffins were amazing. Oh, and the cottage has an excellent ocean view right from the window.

Perfect for a few days off the grid, charming, private, and very quiet.

This property was exactly as advertised, which was precisely what we were looking for. The kitchen was well stocked with cooking utensils, and the whole house was also spotlessly clean. Plenty of extra blankets, and we would have used the wood stove but it didn't get cold enough. It is perfect for people who want to unwind and unplug. The house was conveniently located and had a nice view as well. We enjoyed it very much. Thanks!

Great location!

This spot was ideal for seeing root cellars & seeing hundreds of puffins. The centre for the sealing disaster is a must see! Had a issue with housekeeping but spoke to Dave & it was straightened out in no time. Not a real big spot. There were 4 of us & the living room area is small. I would recommend this spot .

Great location in Elliston, a little worn and very low ceiling in the upstairs.

the location was perfect and we were there to be outside on trails, seeing whales, icebergs and Puffins and we were right in the midst of it all so perfect location. The place was a little tough to find since the grasses were very high and hiding the number on the property, it was tough to park since we had a larger vehicle and the spot was really just for a smaller car. The house was as described except I wouldn't say the ceilings are 5'11" because I'm 5'8" and standing up straight at the top of the stairs I could only fit a finger width over my head, door ways are even shorted, but if you are shorter that shouldn't be a problem. You can see the ocean from the kitchen windows and the bedrooms as well as the picnic table outside. The place was clean and there were the essentials in the kitchen and bath room. There was a TV in the living room with a DVD player, but you couldn't hook one up to the other, they weren't compatible (TV was too old a model) not sure if there use to be a more current model there but it wasn't there when we were, lucky for us we had perfect weather so were outside the entire time and had no need for the TV, had it been raining it might have been nice. Overall Newfoundland is gorgeous, great people, outstanding scenery and wildlife. Elliston is very close to Bonavista (about 5 minute drive) but there are also trails within walking distance. Puffins are close by car or about a 20 to 30 minute walk. This is a very out of the way place and was good for our needs, to sleep.

Truly a Newfoundland experience!

This house is in a remarkably beautiful location. We could see several icebergs out the windows at the time of our visit. The bottom floor has been nicely remodeled but the upstairs carpeting needs to be removed and replaced. However, the place was immaculately clean and had a well stocked kitchen. Beware that the washer, dryer and TV all do not work. We didn't care but this may be an issue for some. As stated by others, the upstairs ceiling is very low so may not be good for tall people. But if you want to feel a little bit like a native, give this place a try. We thought it was fun!

We, 5 friends, stayed here for 2 nights. Even everyone had different experience, I would say Dave is a responsible owner. He took our situation fairly.

Beautiful cozy house!

Perfect spot for me and my partner to stay for the weekend. Lots to do and see around Elliston, Bonavista and Trinity. The property was a short distance from everything we wanted to see. The house was nice and cozy, perfect kitchen for cooking our meals, wood stove was lovely and we even roasted marshmallows in it. Very cute perfect place to stay!! Will definitely return.

Nice little house

Elliston is a beutifull village with astonishing surroundings and the house was convinient enough. Don't expect any luxury and beware of he ceilings, they are very short! But it was a house with some charm!

Salt Box Santuary

I'm writing this from my bed in Ottawa. I have just woken up and wished I was still in the Salt Box Home on Catalina Road. Last year I gifted myself a solo trip to Newfoundland. I always had a romantic fascination for the amazing place that is Canadian. I went with endless expectations and intentions. The moment I stepped into the house and looked in I felt at home. I quickly grabbed my camera and briskly walked down the hill to the ocean. I could not believe what I was seeing and where I was. My heart started beating faster and it never slowed down. The first morning I woke and was looking over tops of houses with a view of the ocean from my bed and another view over my toes. As I went down the stairs I kept looking out every window to see if the ocean was still there. As I said I came with many intentions but all changed. I had decided that I did not want to get a driving impression of Newfoundland instead I explored by getting out of the car and walking to the shores with my camera. The Salt Box Home is very comfortable and so lovely. It is NOT A HOTEL. This beautiful home will lower your blood pressure if you let it. Sit by the opened window and eat your breakfast as you hear the waves and see the ocean. Walk around the little village. Sit on the rocks by the information centre and breath with the waves. Take a very short drive or nice walk to the beach. My evening candle lit baths became a ritual and so very relaxing. I loved the tub and vintage look. I was inspired to create shell wall decorations of which I hope are still there. They say that in Newfoundland you can experience three seasons every day. This can be true and is one of the reasons I fell in love with the place. Take your mini trips to Bonavista 5km away and buy your groceries and wine. Go to a local cafe next to the pub and enjoy the locals gathering. Ellistion is pretty central for all your relaxing needs. I stayed at the Saltbox for one beautiful month, I wish I stayed all winter. If I would give any advice, don't spoil your vacation with expectations. Just let Newfoundland take care of you and go with the flow. Enjoy!

A place to hang your hat.

This property is as stated in the ad. We ( wife and I ) stayed during a Roots, Rants, and Roars Festival in Elliston. The House is one of the first properties on the access road coming in and it was in walking distance to anything in Elliston.it was warm and dry, the house itself is a older house but it suited us fine. The kitchen appliances we used was the toaster and the coffee pot only since we did go for a food festival! The thing that struck me most was the ceiling height upstairs....it was probably 5 ft high and I am 6 foot tall. It did make us laugh and I do have a great pic that makes me look like I'm in Gullivers Travels. Just be careful if you get up in the middle of the night! Plus there is no shower just a bathtub and it could use a mirror in the bathroom.

This place was all that was advertised.A 2 block walk to the water and one more block to the memorial of a fisherman and his son.(must see)Th puffins are about a 10min. drive then a 5 min. walk and you are up very close to the nesting area. The town of Elliston has about 300 people and all are very friendly as the rest of Newfoundland.A small store in town has a small variety of groceries and beer., a short 10 min. drive to Bonavista and 2 grocery stors have a larger variety. When we were there abou 15 to 20 iceburges came into the bay.The house allowed us to do most of our own cooking and a good hot bath a night. The old owner stopped by and was surprised to see the upgrades done to the place. The new owner was very accommodating and an example was when we metioned about liking to barbeque , he said to go buy one and take it off the rent. This place is not a 5 star hotel but a place to go for a true Newfoundland Experience.P.S. Root Cellar Rest.around the corner has excellent food and wine and Iceburg beer.

Dirty, musty smell and owner was nasty

Booked for one wk in June and ended up leaving after 3 days and paying to rent another place . When we arrived to the house, we were uncertain if we were at the correct place as the entrance was not marked and was overrun with brush, the door to the house was banged up and this should have been our first sign for what we were in for. The house had a very musty smell probably due to the old shag carpenting in the upper level. The refrigerator was very dirty on the inside with shelves that appeared to be rusted. We stayed 3 nights until I could no longer tolerate the musty smell. other issues included: low ceilings on the upper level..if you are 5'5" or under its fine but not good if you are taller than this, bathroom tub hot water was not working and we had to take a butter knife to tighten the nut, overall dark and unpleasant place. apparently we forget the knife in the bathroom bc the owner sent us a nasty letter questioning what the knife was doing in the bathroom. The owner also hadn't considered such things as having a simple mirror or wastebasket in the bathroom. I have never left a bad review on vrbo before and have traveled extensively, but I felt compelled to warn others to avoid this place. The overall feeling I got from this place was someone who just wants to make money and doesnt care about his guests. furthermore, I have proof in photos of how bad this place truly was.

Huge disappointment

Contrary to listing, not completely renovated, old bathroom with blue tub only - no shower, old kitchen with old appliances, no BBQ, no view, no microwave, exterior in awful shape (this is honestly an understatement), broken screens, 5'6" ceilings on 2nd floor, very old multilayered 3" mattresses, building about 10' from pavement of main road into town. Worst case of over-sale we have ever experienced. We could not stay there and asked for a full refund. Out of province owner not attuned to market.

Hello, my name is David. I'm an artist and work all around Canada. I bought this house in Newfoundland because there is so much natural beauty everywhere. As an artist that is very important.
My son, who is a carpenter and I renovated this traditional Salt Box house. It was in pretty rough shape when I first bought it but now is rebuilt and finished.
I love to travel and love to live in rural settings. Over the years Ive bought five other waterfront properties. Two of them are cottages in Quebec near Ottawa. The other three are on the same lake. I built my house, a large studio and a school house for teaching art classes on those properties. Yes I do like to keep busy. When I'm not doing art work then I'm building something. Its a lot of fun, hard work and very creative. I love to look around at the things I've created. It gives me a sense of honest work and accomplishment.

Por qué eligió esta propiedad

When I was working in St. Johns NFLD building the displays at Signal Hill visitor center I fell in love with the province. I met and made friends with many local folks and was most impressed with the rugged beauty of the Discovery Peninsula. After several trips back to Newfoundland I finally found a small quaint house that I could afford. It did need lots of work but I like doing that. It is so great to be on the ocean. Elliston is a town that welcomed me with open arms.
Im sure that when you see the surrounding ocean landscape and the diverse natural beauty of the Discovery Peninsula that you too will fall in love with the place just as I did.

Qué distingue a esta propiedad

As an artist I can be sort of choosy about the places I stay or live in. I prefer places with character rather than 'typical suburban 5 star hotel look'. The Catalina Road house as we call it is a traditional antique Salt Box. I wanted something that had history and reflected the 'old ways'. The Catalina Road House was built by a Basque fisherman about 200 years ago. It is solid and of course has a kitchen in which I have had several musical gathering. The old fish drying racks have long since returned to the earth but one day I hope to restore them too. There is an ancient root cellar on the property. This spoke to me of the old local history. I knew then that this was the place for me. It's a comfortable little house situated in a great community surrounded by fantastic natural beauty. There are plenty of things to do and places to visit all within a half hour drive. The near by town of Bonavista has everything anyone would need as far as shopping, groceries stores, a great pub, live theater and much more. The Cod fishing, Puffin and whale watching is great.
