Last year we took a trip to Beaufort, SC and the nearby state park at Hunting Island. I fell in love all over again. The charm, history, natural beauty and abundant wildlife in the area provided a magical visit. So in the Spring of 2022 we purchased a beach house in the gated resort of Harbor Island, SC, just 14 miles east of Beaufort. While Charleston offers a little more urban, sophisticated vibe, Beaufort offers a throwback feeling of what the Lowcountry was like years ago with an emphasis on connecting you to the natural landscape.

Like Charleston, the Sea Islands are historic regions dating back to the early1600's . They have innovative cuisine, amazing museums and great outdoor pursuits. Add gorgeous old churches and architecture and you have destination cities that draw visitors from all over the world.

So whether you are craving history, recreation, culinary scenes or beaches, we know you will enjoy staying in one of our favorite cities.

THE COMMUNITY
Harbor Island is a 1,400 acre barrier island 14 miles east/southeast of the historic seaport of Beaufort, SC. Harbor Island offers a resort pool, children's pool, playground, tennis courts, pickleball, basketball, a golf chipping green, dog park, nature trails, children's nature programs, a crabbing dock, a fishing pier on the creek and three miles of private beach for swimming, kayaking, fishing and nature watching. Daily food trucks and a pool front clubhouse provide places for a quick bite or other conveniences.

More than anything the island and its residents have dedicated themselves to understanding, viewing and protecting the area's wildlife. It is a certified Community Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Foundation. Not only are there nature trails and wildlife programs, you will see active loggerhead turtle nests, and many migrating bird populations. The beaches and marsh support terns, pelicans, egrets, herons, eagles, horseshoe crabs, alligators, racoons, snakes, dolphins and many other lowcountry species. Harbor Island really is a place to reconnect with nature as you stroll the beautiful beaches and boardwalks.

THE SURROUNDING AREA
Harbor Island is located almost halfway between Charleston and Savannah/HIlton Head, in an area known as The Sea Islands. The Sea Islands of South Carolina are much more than live oaks draped in Spanish moss. They are home to developments, like:

---Port Royal, a historic port community, originally explored and named in 1562, site of Civil War naval battles, and boasting a picturesque downtown with a beach, festivals and restaurants.

---Frogmore, the pre-civil war plantation area that became known as home of the Penn Center, a leading Gullah-Geechee cultural community and civil rights center where Martin Luther King and other leaders of the Civil Rights movement studied and lectured.

---Hunting Island State Park, adjacent to Hunting Island, that boasts 5,000 acres of maritime forest, marsh front trails, four miles of sandy beachfront, a historic lighthouse and museum, ferry tours to St. Phillips Island and kayaking.

---Beaufort, founded in 1711, was named The South's Best Small Town in 2020, with its waterfront park and dining, museums, churches, Pat Conroy Literary Center, art galleries, antebellum mansions and the Spanish Moss Trail, a beautiful 14.9 mile biking and walking trail., named one of the Ten Best Urban Walking Trails in the U.S.

You will not find a better blend of activities than you will in this area. It truly is a special region and a magical island. You will relax and reconnect with nature.
