Like many of its neighbours, once a producer of fine Cognac and still today surrounded by rolling hills of vineyards and fields of sunflower. La Cannonerie sits amongst a lattice of 'white lanes' that link tiny settlements to quaint and unspoilt villages. It would be hard to imagine a more relaxing 'escape' destination!
Around 90 minutes from the exclusive shops, port and budget flight destination of La Rochelle, a little less to the gorgeous coast lines of La Gironde and Ile d'Oleron. Or choose from a dozen rural market towns, bedecked with château, castles, restaurants, Romanesque churches, not to mention Cognac distilleries.
Well equipped and recently and sensitively re-fitted to a very high standard, the gites are substantial original stone and shuttered labourers cottages, dotted around a substantial Cannonerie courtyard. Guests can enjoy the afternoon sun from a covered cool communal seating area or savour the amazing sunsets from the adjoining hill top open air swimming pool.
In the fridge, you may well find a little gift from the next door Bertrand distillery, your invitation to stroll across the vineyard and pay a little visit. Oh, and why not barbecue your evening meal and sip your four euro bottle of local wine from those afore mentioned markets, and finish off with a tipple from the neighbouring field. We did - every single night!
