Today, Eastham is known as the "Gateway” to the Cape Cod National Seashore, which was founded in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy to protect Cape Cod's coast from erosion and overpopulation.

Eastham is the gateway — literally the starting point — for these 40 miles of undeveloped Atlantic coastline. It encompasses many natural habitats that invite exploration, such as beach, dune, salt marsh, freshwater ponds and upland forest. There are also many human stories to discover – shipwrecks and lifesaving, whaling, wireless communication and early tourism.
