Sobre o anfitrião
Anfitrião: Erwan Raven
We feel a profound sense of privilege in being the new caretakers of Villa Angeletto since becoming its proud owners in the spring of 2021. Our vision is to protect and cherish this remarkable estate for the next half-century. Remarkably, we acquired the villa during the strict confines of the pandemic entirely based on photographs. Yet, the moment travel restrictions eased, we discovered that the true charm and magic of this Florentine-style Belle Époque property can only fully be understood by experiencing it first-hand.
Our connection to this beautiful region is lifelong. I have deep-rooted ties to the local area, having been educated at the International School of Sophia Antipolis, following a path set by my parents who fell in love with the Côte d'Azur over 30 years ago when they bought their own home in nearby Valbonne.
Though our travels have taken us all over the world, the French Riviera has always held an irresistible pull for us. Between the endless plethora of cultural activities, the exceptionally warm climate, and the vibrant, welcoming international community, it remains an incontestable favourite. We are absolutely thrilled to join the global expatriates who call this paradise home.
Currently in our late forties and based in London due to professional commitments, Villa Angeletto is our long-term sanctuary, a gift we look forward to sharing with friends and family for decades to come. While our family fills the villa with laughter and music throughout the low season, we open our doors during the summer months to share the estate’s timeless magic with discerning guests from around the globe. We look forward to welcoming you to our private paradise.
Por que o anfitrião escolheu essa propriedade
We fell in love with this exclusive hillside directly east of Grasse for its rare combination of absolute privacy, a perfect microclimate, and its staggering connection to European high society and art history. Perched at 460 metres, the air is clean, the fragrance of the Mediterranean gardens is intoxicating, and the panoramic views of the glittering azure sea are utterly transformative.
What we enjoy most is being immersed in Grasse, the undisputed world capital of perfumery, whose historic scent-making artistry is celebrated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The scene here is a sensory masterpiece; fields of jasmine, rose, and lavender blanket the valley, filling the evening breeze with a delicate sweetness that defines the authentic French Riviera lifestyle.
This peaceful mountain enclave also serves as the ultimate launchpad for the rest of the Côte d'Azur. We love the effortless regional connectivity: the world-famous beaches, dining, and glamour of Cannes are just a short, scenic drive away, and Nice International Airport is quickly accessible for stress-free travel. Best of all, a direct train from Grasse station offers an idyllic, traffic-free coastal rail journey all the way through Nice, into the heart of Monaco, and straight across the border to Ventimiglia in Italy. It gives you the best of both worlds: a secluded, historic sanctuary with the entire Riviera at your doorstep.
O que faz essa propriedade ser única?
To live here is to walk in the footsteps of legends. Originally chosen in the late 19th century by JP Morgan co-founder John Harjes, this steep mountain face was an elite enclave shared only with Alice de Rothschild and the master perfumer Léon Chiris. Following a historic visit from Queen Victoria, the area evolved into the prestigious "Quartier Rothschild", a hillside renowned for its grand, historic estates.
What we enjoy most is the palpable, creative energy that still echoes through the property. John Harjes built the villa for his daughter Nelly, who later married into the Cartier family. It then became a sun-drenched sanctuary for the iconic American Impressionist Mary Cassatt, who regularly hosted her close friends Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Edgar Degas. Sitting on the covered terrace with a glass of local wine, you can easily picture Renoir and Degas whiling away the hours debating the future of art against the backdrop of the rolling hills.
Later, the villa became home to celebrated composer Germaine Tailleferre, filling the grand salon with chamber music, before a renowned French perfumer established his scent laboratory in the estate’s lush gardens.
Over the decades, the property has been lovingly modernised by subsequent British expatriates. What we love about the modern layout is how they artfully placed a spectacular kitchen and bar at the beating heart of the home, creating a seamless, effortless flow between the elegant interior living spaces and the sun-kissed outdoor dining terraces. It is a timeless piece of Riviera paradise
