Looking for the ultimate in peace and romance for you and your family or friends? Look no further! Moulin de Valette is a delightful family home in a beautiful setting with an incredible atmosphere. It’s a home built with endless love, where young and old alike have shared countless wonderful moments. However, it’s also a house where the DIY projects are endless, where new cobwebs appear in no time, and where we sometimes have to deal with a marten in the roof. Moulin de Valette is a unique, loving, and beautiful place that’s incredibly secluded on our own lake. Time and again, we are enchanted by its splendor. If you’re the type who can appreciate a rural home like this—one that’s never quite finished—then Moulin de Valette is the place for you.
Moulin de Valette is a distinctive old watermill, built around 1850, which drew its power from the water of the reservoir on the northwest side of the dike, in front of the mill. Recent archaeological finds indicate that a mill stood on this site as early as the Middle Ages, belonging to a castle located slightly higher up. Today, it is an imposing vacation home consisting of the watermill, the miller’s house, and a small cottage on the dike. There are also several barns. The property is completely secluded, set in a rural setting, and has its own grounds of approximately 12 hectares, including 5 hectares of private lake. Swimming and fishing are permitted in this lake.
On the valley side of the house, the mill overlooks the stream valley of the small stream that feeds the lake and flows in branches past the mill. This stream valley, stretching 1 km in length, is also owned by the mill.
Moulin de Valette is ideally suited for vacations with larger groups—such as a family with children, multiple families, or several generations. Painting classes are also offered (contact us for more information), and the house is perfect for team-building weeks or weekends. Rentals are available year-round. A full week is preferred, though outside the high season it’s also possible to rent for a long weekend, for example. During the summer, it’s wonderful to barbecue outside in the evening and relax late into the night on a raft on the lake or by a fire pit. In the colder months, you can relax by the fireplace with a good book and a glass of fine Burgundy wine.
The complex consists of:
- The watermill itself, with the turbine at the bottom, four floors housing the drive mechanism, the millstone, and conveyor belts that were once used to transport the flour and grain. The grain was unloaded from the floor at the level of the dike, which is accessed via a covered bridge. In this section, for example, you could set a table here in the evening to have dinner (with a beautiful view of the lake on one side and the valley with its streams on the other), but it remains in its original condition and is not inhabited.
- The miller’s house, with a basement below, the living area with a terrace above, and the top floor, which we have converted into an apartment.
- The small house on the dike with 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Barns, built against the mill.
- Small sheds, along the path that runs across the dike and on the valley side (with a satellite dish).
There is a large 45 m² kitchen-diner with a fireplace on the first floor of the miller’s house. The kitchen is fully equipped with a dishwasher, kitchen appliances, and plenty of pots, pans, knives, etc. Adjacent to the kitchen are a bedroom and a study/reading room. There is also a bathroom here with a small shower and a toilet.
The apartment on the second floor (70 m²) has a sitting area with a bathroom (with a bathtub), a separate toilet, and a large bedroom (25 m²).
There are four bedrooms in the small cottage; downstairs, three rooms of 10 m² each for two people, two bathrooms (one with a bathtub, the other with a small shower), and upstairs there is a similar room for three or four people, and a charming children’s room (two beds for children up to 12 years old).
The watermill itself has 4 floors. The mill’s machinery is still in its original condition.
Pets (dogs, cats) are allowed.
From the vacation home, you have a beautiful view of your own lake (northwest) or the river valley (southeast). The house, as it were, faces two completely different worlds: the spectacular side of the lake and the understated,
