The Red Fern Cottage

Come visit a cozy farm house in the beautiful mountain setting of Highlands, NC. This special one of a kind mountain home is perfect for anyone who wishes to have privacy, a charming atmosphere, and closeness to all activities without being in town. Located bordering national forrest, this cozy farmhouse is located on 5 acres. A wood burning rock fireplace, beautiful light filled sunroom, wood floors, and newly renovated kitchen will ensure for a comfortable getaway retreat. The master bedroom and full bathroom are located on the main level. Two additional bedrooms (each containing queen size beds), a full bathroom, and a bunk room (containing two twin beds) are located on the second level. Guests are able to enjoy the modern amenities of DirectTV and Wi-Fi while being in a remote mountain atmosphere. Wooded surrounding outdoor fire pit can provide a nice evening activity on the cool evening in Highlands. Located close to Dry Falls Waterfall, Bridal Veil Falls, and Bartram Trail for hiking. Only ten minutes from Highlands downtown post office.

Wonderful House in a Quiet Location

Red Fern is a very comfortable house with all the basic amenities in a very peaceful location while still being a short drive to Highlands. It was totally quiet and close to lots of good hiking opportunities. We'll definitely be planning to return in the future.

Relaxing Stay

We throughly enjoyed our first stay in the Highlands! The property was very private yet not far from downtown shopping and restaurants. The best of both worlds.. The wood burning fireplace gave it all the more charm. The outdoor secluded fire pit was also a hit! Kitchen had everything we needed to cook family meals. We will be back!

Getting away from it all!

Another great VRBO experience. The owners have thought of everything. The kitchen was well appointed and having internet was important. It's why we chose this property as some of our family needed to do some online work. When the internet went out, the owner drove several hours to come repair it. Love the seclusion but also proximity to Asheville,Highlands, and Cashiers. Great hikes, restaurants and even breweries nearby!

Perfect base for your mountain getaway

The home served us well as a home base for the several day stay by our 5-person group (one teen and four adults). The kitchen was adequately equipped, and the rooms were clean and comfortable. The Wi-Fi speed was what you might expect for a home in a remote area of the mountains, and adequate for checking emails and staying up-to-date on current events. The drive to Highlands was quite reasonable and was wonderfully scenic. We found several good hikes in the surrounding area. I can only imagine how beautiful the setting is in peak leaf season. Kati was very quick to respond to my questions and a good host. Overall, we found Red Fern Cottage to be a good value for the price.

Quiet, Clean & Comfortable

This house was very clean and had all the comforts of a home including a well stocked kitchen. Everything was easy to use and/or figure out --- even the television! Plenty of space and bedrooms with comfortable beds. Very user friendly. Only drawback was the long gravel road to get to the home and steep driveway. Everything else was great!

Nice home

The house was just as portrayed in the listing, nice comfortable home. Great fireplace and Firewood was provided which we appreciated. Very quiet location, a nice place for family weekend.

Great spot for getting away from it all!!!

The Red Fern cottage is tucked away in a very quiet and private area. The home is nicely furnished with extremely comfortable beds. Great fireplace to sit in front of in the evenings. There is also a fire pit up the path from the house, although we didn't take advantage of that. Huge TV with Direct TV in the main room. No TVs in the bedrooms which is a good thing if you want to really relax and get away form things. You are still only 15-20 minutes form the Highlands. Kitchen was well equipped. This was our first getaway in almost 2 years. We wish we could have extended the stay for a few days more. My only caution is that if someone has any mobility issues or is unsteady on their feet, getting from the parking area into the house can be tricky. When we arrived, a combination of an earlier rain plus falling leaves made the steps to the front door a little slippery. The Red Fern is on our list for a return trip next spring.!! Thanks for a great stay!!

Mountain get away

We had a wonderful time at Red Fern. The house is the perfect size! Kitchen is well equipped and clean!! Although we did have plenty of storage in closets, there were no hangers, or dressers in the bedrooms. We plan on coming back again! Wonderful property and location. Thank you!

Excellent Stay

Our family loved this house. Very clean and comfortable. It’s a bit of a drive off the main road but the privacy and beautiful yard are worth it. Wonderful back deck to enjoy a glass of wine on!

Quiet Mountain retreat

We had a lovely weekend at Red Fern cottage. The house was clean and nice, the back porch was where we spent most of the weekend, and the fire pit area was a nice surprise. It is on a lovely gravel road that is well maintained. Such a nice weekend.

Highlands Gem...felt like home!

The trip was amazing including the property. The owners were very attentive and provided "all" that you could or would need for a stay at their wonderful cottage! Location was top notch...close to town, the parks, trails and literally the most amazing falls (Dry Falls) was just down the road! I cannot THANK Wes and Kati enough for sharing their home with my wife and I. I would highly recommend this property to anyone wishing to enjoy beautiful Highlands and the surrounding areas. I would say take a half hour scenic ride to Franklin, NC should also be a must if in this area!

Very nice and peaceful.

Our family of 5 were looking for a mountain getaway to relax and unplug. This cottage was perfect. Plenty of space, clean and nicely decorated. Kitchen is well stocked and plenty of counter space. Very comfortable front room with great fireplace. Quiet place, but still close to town, trails, and waterfalls. Highly recommend.

Secluded location

Wonderful house in secluded wooded location. Close enough for easy access to Highlands or Franklin but remote enough to really feel like an escape. Well equipped and comfortable. Loved it.

Great!

Looking online you never fully know a property. The Red Fern House exceeded any expectations I had. Everything was new and up to date. We enjoyed the location, the home, and the furnishings. The weather was bad one day, and we had no problem opening the doors and listening to the rain through the screen and occasionally getting outside to sit on the porch. It is terrific listening only to nature. We hope to visit again soon. Our 2nd son recently moved to Charlotte and loves the outdoors. We live in Florida, so it will be great spot to meet him and spend quality time.

Fantastic

My wife and I enjoyed a fantastic long weekend together here. The cabin is very well kept and close to town. We enjoyed reading in the sunroom and walking around town. Would definitely stay here again!

Red Fern Delight

What a wonderful, secluded getaway Red Fern was. It looks exactly like the photos only better. The things you couldn't see were the beautiful flower/hosta garden, the tasteful decor and the seclusion and privacy that surrounded you. We were greeted with a dear note and a delicious bottle of wine...thank you for that touch of hospitality. We treated ourselves to long walks surrounded by nature and when we were ready, we motored to two nearby waterfalls and just a little further down the road we were in Highlands proper. The house was very clean and Kati was wonderful to respond to all of my inquiries before and during my trip. A hostess with the mostest! The nearest "neighbors" did have barking dogs that echoed through the trees but that was not a bother. They even chased our vehicle as we approached the property which was adjacent to Red Fern....again, we are dog lovers and that was not a problem. Kati, thank you for sharing your lovely vacation getaway with us and I highly recommend this property to anyone that is contemplating a trip to Highlands.

A great place outside of Highlands

It was perfect for what we wanted—A classy secluded place. Although it was only my wife and myself celebrating our anniversary, it would have been great for when we travel with our kids and grandkids (and we might repeat with them).
