Tamika claimed that she saw cockroaches in late evening of day one. She said “We have a roach situation. It’s roaches everywhere.” I went to the house the next morning and offered them a full refund if they wanted to leave. They chose to stay. I searched the house that morning, including under the sink and behind the fridge, stove, and dishwasher and found nothing. We talked about fogging but decided that would be too invasive during their stay. I sent her this message: “Hi Tamika! It was great meeting you all! I treated under the stove, fridge, and dishwasher. Also put powder down in the garage. I sealed up areas beneath the cupboards, and put clear tape over the seam where the counter top meets the bar. I also ran the oven cleaning cycle. It might be beeping when you get home. Just open and close the oven door too stop it. The racks for the bottom oven are in the top oven while it cleans. You can put them back if you need them. Hopefully these measures will help. Feel free to text or call anytime and I hope you guys are having a great day.” They also claimed there was a water bottle in the refrigerator with booze in it. I don't know what to make of that but I advised them to throw away all of the courtesy water bottles. We've been doing this for ten years now and that's a new one. Why an adult (her daughter is grown, not a child) would drink from an opened water bottle that smells like vodka, and how an accidental sip of vodka would make adult sick, is beyond me. I wondered if one of them did this (there were 5 in the party) then tried to hide it? Her daughter looked quite healthy and happy to me, smiling in an evening dress Insta pictures in the front yard. They proceeded to trash the house for three days. When they left, there was loosely covered food on the counter top, which surprised me considering there was supposedly a cockroach infestation. Maybe they were trying to cause one? Who knows. A bed cover was so badly stained that we had to replace it. Objects were scattered all over the house and lanai. There were empty booze bottles everywhere. I suspect these were influencers doing a "how to get a VRBO stay for free" episode. I saw them filming and they had those little round lights and cameras and stuff everywhere. After their stay, I issued a 2/3rds refund. I was still giving them the benefit of the doubt. In hindsight, that was probably a mistake, but I'd rather err on the side of being kind. After I issued the refund, she sent me a note VRBO saying the refund was "unacceptable" and begging for that last 1/3rd refund. I didn't respond. Since begging didn't work, she followed that up a few days later with an sad phone call where she threatened me and then tried and intimidate me. She said she'd sue me and report me to the BBB. She was yelling she would "never give this up" and things like that. I felt like she was threatening to take further action such as vandalizing the property. I informed her no further refund is pending and terminated the call, and asked neighbors to keep a closer watch. She opened a claim with VRBO. VRBO performed an investigation and it was closed satisfactorily in our favor. The pool became a bit green and low during their stay because they kept mis-setting the valves even though the instructions are clear and I explained it to them twice. Was this also on purpose so they'd have something else to complain about? Who knows.
