A charming and cozy hideaway convenient to Antietam National Battlefield and Harpers Ferry. Has a well-appointed kitchen with every necessary implement and a few more besides.Plan to spend several days here, as there is so much to explore.

We loved our stay in the beautiful Canal House! Everything was exactly as described and as pictured. The kitchen is well stocked with dishes and utensils and even had some staples like coffee, tea and olive oil. The area is beautiful and full of so much history. We took long walks on the canal path, then enjoyed relaxing on the breezy front porch. The bed was very comfortable and there was plenty of hot water. Really, everything was perfect!Vern certainly deserves his designation as a Superhost. His communication and instructions were timely and clear. And he was very responsive when we had questions during our stay.

The historic Canal House is charming & like stepping back in time to experience the colonial period! We enjoyed coffee & evening drinks on the porch overlooking beautiful gardens. The beds & nice linens made for great sleeping! The kitchen was well equipped with a great coffee bar! We loved the close proximity to getting on the C& O trail for daily bike rides. It was the perfect spot for our party off 4 to explore the area. Vern was a wonderful host & even went the extra mile to ship the bike charger we left @ the house!! I highly recommend Vern’s home!

I had an absolutely wonderful vacation. The location is this side of heaven. The home is a stone’s throw from the Potomac River with the C&O Canal Tow Path providing opportunities for biking and hiking. The home is surrounded with beautiful gardens. I loved sitting on the front porch listening to the birds and watching for deer. I was visiting the area because my grandmother had participated in the 1976 Hagerstown time capsule and I received a letter from her written 50 years ago.I feel like this home was the perfect place to rekindle memories of a time when life was simpler. I left feeling really refreshed and I can’t wait to visit again.

Our experience was cut short due to me rolling my ankle on our first night at the house. The house and the surrounding grounds were beautiful. It was as described in the listing. Unfortunately we left the following morning. Vern was very concerned and hopeful that we would come back another time. I assured him that we would love to do that.

In all fairness, my expectations may have not been reasonable. I understood that this was an historic home, but I was not prepared for how old it really is. (This may be an attraction to some, so take it with a grain of salt). It is obvious that there has been a lot of time and effort put into renovations, but it is still a very old structure. Floors are uneven, doors don't fit and bathrooms are primitive. On the upside, kitchen is well appointed and well equipped (we did not use it much, however). The house itself was very clean, but outside was overgrown and finding things like the path to the dumpsters was difficult. The property is hard to find - particularly at night in the rain - make sure to follow the host's directions precisely (and, when you make the U-turn, go back up the hill, not straight along the canal).Master bedroom is comfortable enough, bed is nice. However, only one of the electrical outlets worked and you are limited to one light; the door in this room does not close. Second bedroom's beds are small - too small for my 6'2" traveling buddy. I was a little put off by the additional charge for use of the second bedroom. Both bedrooms are cooled by window units and they struggled.Maybe it is due to the age of the house or maybe the rainy weather during our stay, but there is a mustiness throughout the house that just did not go away even after the rain stopped.

We appreciate you mentioning our cleanliness, well-equipped kitchen, comfortable bed, and clear directions, and we are sorry that the historic features of our home ultimately did not meet your travel preferences. We take great pride in our home and invite guests to experience and help preserve its historic features, including our clawfoot tub and original 1790 hardwood floors—the same age as those at Mt. Vernon! We hope guests who come to experience the proud American history of our area will specifically seek out our home's original historical characteristics, rather than consider them inconveniences. We also regret the challenges of visiting from other parts of the country during a strong nor’easter. We invite all potential guests to read our descriptions carefully and agree to our house rules before booking our property, to ensure that they are intentional about experiencing the charms of one of the oldest houses in this historic area, and not just a place to sleep and shower (as this Guest shared with us after his departure). Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about the Canal House at Taylors Landing.

A beautiful, charming home that was perfect for a quiet weekend getaway from the city. The perfect blend of historic charm and modern updates, with a lovely garden and easy access to the C&O Canal Towpath for beautiful rambles along the Potomac River. The host could not have been more prompt or attentive. A real gem!

The garden and grounds were absolutely beautiful. Very easy to get to the cabin. Location could not be better for everything we wanted to show our friends who came all the way from the Netherlands for their first visit to the USA. Communication with owner was great and everything was exactly as we were told. The history of the house was great to learn about.

Perfect holiday weekend getaway

The house and surrounding area are absolutely amazing. The combination of history and beauty is hard to match. So many little touches inside the house and on the property really made it feel like a home away from home. Vern is wonderful and very accommodating. We hope to come back in the fall. Amazing, relaxing stay...would recommend to anyone!

Storybook Setting

This historic house is lovely and is the perfect marriage between old and modern convenience…the idyllic setting with beautiful gardens overlooking the B&O Canal is right out of a children’s fairytale.

Amazing house

My husband and I stayed here for a quick anniversary getaway and had a wonderful time in this home. The host provided great information about the check in process and made sure we had all we needed. We had a amazing day checking out the surrounding area including Harper's Ferry. Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us.

Fantastic C&O Canal House

Charming, clean, well-stocked with thoughtful touches throughout the property. Fireplace in the kitchen was cozy and the host was very helpful with suggestions about kayaking in the winter. Able to bike, birdwatch, and wander the area from this wonderful historic home just above the Potomac River. Look forward to returning to see the garden in bloom!

Wonderful retreat

We really enjoyed our visit. The house is immaculately maintained for it's age. The outdoor areas seem endless and are welcoming as you stroll the walkways to the home. The home is a cozy retreat from everyday life. As a huge plus, the kitchen is stocked with everything we were looking for, making cooking dinner a simple process. We look forward to coming back in the winter.

We love this place!

Came here for a 3 night getaway, We loved the way the home owners have seamlessly blended the historic with touches of modern farmhouse. We loved sitting on the patio just reading. It rained each day but we were still able to enjoy some time outside. The inside had everything we needed. We had planned to go out for a few meals but enjoyed it so much at the house, the only time we left was for a short walk on the C&O.

Amazing property!!!

This is an amazing property for those that would like to step back in time and enjoy a unique stay. Vern does a great job of communicating throughout the process, and there are instructions to be found through the property for do's and don'ts given the historic nature of the property.It feels like there are little things to discover in every nook and cranny. Overall it's a wonderful place to relax and enjoy peace and quiet. The gardens are beautiful, and the porch is a great place to relax with a glass of wine or cup of coffee.

Balance of history and convenience along the C&O

The Canal House is a wonderful home! The house itself is meticulously kept with its history intact while offering a modern kitchen and air conditioning. The grounds are filled with beautiful flowers and a small garden pond. The location was perfect to enjoy biking on the C&O towpath, plus a short drive to Antietam battlefield, tubing, rafting and hiking.

Relaxing Labor Day Weekend

Enjoyed our stay over a long weekend. A really nice historic property with character. The gardens create a tranquil setting. It was great to sit on the porch in the morning with a cup of coffee and watch the hummingbirds (bring bug spray for mosquitoes). Enjoyed an 8 mile kayak ride from Taylor's Landing to Shepherdstown (Pedal and Paddle shop). Checked out Betty's restaurant for breakfast and Blue Moon for supper (both good). New Visitor Center at the Antietam Battlefield.

Thank you for inspiring us to add a comment in our set-up messages about summer mosquitoes. We use (and will recommend going forward that our Guests use) the ceiling fans in the porch and on the pergola, when sitting outside in mosquito weather. Idyllic destination property

My daughter and I had a very special two-night getaway at this incredibly charming property. We were in awe of the amazing beauty of the gardens and were delighted by the nooks and crannies of this historic home. The house is extremely clean (and I am picky about this!) with pretty bedroom linens, and lovely furniture. Communication with Vern, the accommodating and kind owner, was excellent. Nearby Shephardstown and Antietam Battlefield provided us with activities and restaurants. We were sad to leave - book your stay immediately!
