SML First

This home and location at SML was like a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Perfect for families who like to be on the water. We rented a motorboat for a local marina and came and went as desired from our own private boat dock at the house. We loved the whole stay!

Great spot

Perfect lake getaway . Process was very easy and owner was helpful with all questions!! Beds were VERY soft as well.. for me that’s a deal breaker so very pleased !!Would definitely recommend

Beautiful, very clean and well stocked house. The bear details everywhere (decorations, outdoor wood pieces, even children bear themed books!) were such a nice touch! Really appreciated cabinets in the kitchen being labeled to find everything, and the game room was a hit. While this may not apply to every stay, everything we needed was there- trash bags, cleaner, paper towels, laundry pods, dish soap, dishwasher pods, coffee, spices, and even tea!10/10 recommend and we WILL be back

Relaxing getaway

The lodge was as impressive as it’s posted pictures. The game room was great as it gave us a fun refuge from a rainy day. It s a beautiful and comfortable home with enough living and outdoor space for a large family. And the communication with the host,James,was great.

Wonderful Stay

We had an enjoyable and relaxing stay at the Sleeping Bear Lodge. We had beautiful weather and spent most of our time outside (canoeing, swimming, fishing, bird watching, enjoying the fire pit and hot tub, etc.), but even if the weather isn't perfect, there is plenty to do inside the house, which makes it an ideal rental location that we highly recommend. Great communication. Clean and comfortable.

Great location, perfect family time

From comfortable beds, to a stocked kitchen with actual sharp knives and clean pots and pans, the home had everything we needed that most places just neglect. They had some toiletries, paper towels, extra toilet paper, cleaning supplies and the game room and hot tub were awesome for kids! We had our boat along, so got to enjoy the larger area of the lake, but also loved the quiet of our little inlet. We would love to come back again!

Vacation

Really large nice cabin in a perfect location on Smith Mountain Lake. The house was a good size with plenty of room. Game room was so much fun. We had a great time playing every night. Hot tub nice. Dock was great for fishing, swimming, paddle boarding, and canoeing. We had a very relaxing vacation.

Great Lake home

This is like camping, but with the luxury of beds and air-conditioning etc. Wonderful lake property. We enjoyed the kayaks and canoe- the coves are great for fishing , seeing herons, kingfisher, and even an otter swimming by ! The house is just as pictured. Beds were very comfortable. We would rent this one again !

Great home with great amenities

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Since our stay fell during the winter and the lake was frozen, I can't speak for the use of the outdoor spaces. However, there was plenty to do inside! The property has a game room which we took full advantage of. The home is well-equipped and very spacious. Loved the layout too. Very clean and a fairly quiet setting. We would definitely stay here again.

Beautiful!

Lakefront Paradise was the perfect location for our family vacation. The home is well-equipped with everything you need and it's a great set-up for a large family or two small families. We spent much of our time outside on the dock and in the water. The area off the dock is calm and shallow, so great for small children. We rented a jet ski and were able to explore a lot of the lake, and then tie it to the dock. James was a wonderful, responsive host as well! Thank you for providing a beautiful home!!

Lovely lake home

This is a lovely lake home with wonderful amenities for all age ranges—from active and sedentary indoor games, to yard games, fire pits, a hot tub, kayaks and canoes. The view is beautiful! There are several areas outside to relax and enjoy the scenery. We had a fabulous time on the rainy days and the sunny days! I do recommend packing extra towels for use at the lake and hot tub. The speedy communication was appreciated too. Thanks for a great stay. :)

Great house!

Our family and 2 dogs had a great 4 day stay at James’ property. Extremely clean and well appointed. The kitchen was the best stocked VRBO kitchen we’ve ever seen. You could easily prepare all your meals at home with a lot of variety. The game room was a great way to spend the chillier evenings and dipping into the hot tub was perfect for unwinding. The neighborhood is beautiful and quiet and great for walking the dogs and getting exercise. Although we stayed in the winter months , we could easily see how fun the back yard would be with ping pong, horseshoes, hammocks, firepit and multiple places to gather and enjoy the water etc. We highly recommend this home!

Not professional

This booking took a turn for the bad when I seen the weather change, i reached out to james about changing booking dates for due to it and he said sure ill check availability. So i thought great my daughter's 10th birthday isnt ruined. He then responded the next weekend wasn't available... i had said no problem just book us for whatever weekend was next available and he responded immediately that its too late to chanfe after he just said it wasn't a problem. To make matters worse our family tested positive for covid days before the trip with documentation and he would rather make money and chance giving the next family covid an responded he will make sure its cleaned properly. This was a stunning beautifully well kept lake house though but horrible business practice.

Thank you for your feedback. I’m glad you found the lake house beautiful and well-kept. I’m sorry for the frustration with your reservation change request. I never meant to suggest that you could not change your dates - when you first reached out, I checked availability right away, but unfortunately, the following weekend and the next several weeks were already fully booked. Regarding the Covid concern, you mentioned that some guests in your group were still planning to come and had not tested positive so I made sure the cleaning team was informed so enhanced protocols were followed to keep everyone safe. I appreciate your comments!

We stayed at this beautiful home in mid-August. Perfect for families with teens. Each bedroom has its own bathroom. Lots is common space. Great lay out, and we could bring our dog, which we loved. There are two bedrooms in the basement with game room, AND there is a door at the bottom of the stairs to block out noise from all the fun. The kitchen was stocked; beds were comfortable; couches were cozy. We have rented about 25 homes over the years, and this is one of the best. It is important for future guests to do their research on lake levels prior to renting this house, however. This was our first time at SML, and we didn’t know that the lake ebbs and flows, and the lake was at a 10 year low during our stay. There was NO WATER around our dock. Of course, there is an *asterisk* saying as much at the bottom of the listing, but you have to get past all the pictures and a list of all the fun things to do on the water like canoe and kayak. Our boys dragged a canoe two houses down and used a neighbor’s dock to put in, passing 7 no trespassing signs in their way (we clearly weren’t the first guests to have this problem), and they complained. All this to say, it is a great house, and we still had fun! If you don’t mind looking at a marsh instead of water —there were lots of deer— and you don’t mind driving and paying for lake access — we found a fishing guide to take us out on his boat —this house is for you and your family!
