Shipping Container Cabin

NUMBER 6 and NEWEST! The Ellwood Box Hop is a single story, minimal Mid-Century box hop which was designed to span a ravine that is directly over a waterfall! The Ellwood is named after an influential designer based out of LA in the 70’s who was known for his minimal steel and glass (couldn’t be more box hop) designs, Craig Ellwood.

The Hocking Hills is an area of the Allegheny Plateau in Appalachian Ohio, primarily in Hocking County, that features cliffs, gorges, rock shelters, and waterfalls. The relatively extreme topography in this area is due to the Blackhand Sandstone (so named because of Native American graphics on the formation near Newark, Ohio), a particular formation that is thick, hard and weather-resistant, and so forms high cliffs and narrow, deep gorges.

The home can be accessed with a key in a lockbox next to the door.

Although everything is on one story, this home is a jaw dropper. Spanning the seasonal waterfall, you are suspended in the air overlooking the waterfalls edge, into the deep ravine below. Did we mention that there is a glass floor inside? From inside you can look out 3 large panoramic windows to the expansive ravine and waterfalls edge, OR you can look beneath your feet to catch a glimpse of the water before it tumbles over the edge.

The third Box Hop on the 75 acres, the Ellwood, is situated towards the top of the property and spans a ravine, suspended over a waterfall. The house is absolutely breathtaking in all seasons as you can watch the water tumble over the falls in spring/summer or see them completely frozen into majestic pieces of art in the winter.

There is no shortage of views at this hop and you can easily hike your way towards the marked trails near the other canyon on the property to see the larger cave and waterfall. This house is very secluded and peaceful. A fan favorite by far.

The driveway is a long gravel driveway. With any inclement weather, we recommend an all-wheel or 4-wheel drive vehicle. The driveway is maintained by a local company, but we want to be sure that you are aware.

Hocking Hills is a great place to visit. The property where we stayed was beautiful and unique. I will say the bedrooms were a bit tight but nice. The hot tub and fire pit were relaxing. The kitchen is well equipped. The shower is amazing!!. I still don't know how they got the container home up there. Great stay..

Welcome Retreat

Myself and my three children (10, 9, 5) had a lovely couple of days above the waterfall. While the water wasn't gushing over the falls, I assure you the setting was nonetheless impressive. The kids were impressed and are eager to return. I imagine the Ellwood to be a fabulous place to spend a rainy fall day and hope to get another opportunity to stay :)

This place is super cute, cozy and had everything we needed to go hike and come home to a unique stay. We were given great details and set up to make our stay very easy. It ended up being WAY to hot to enjoy the hot tub, so we may just need to come back.

Amazing As Always

This is my second box hop in so many years to escape downtown and Fourth of July. The entire experience is always immaculate from check in to check out. Really loving the (recent?) addition of having enamel pins of all the different locations to collect!

Beautiful property that is very close to some of the best hiking you will experience in the United States. Hot tub was great as well!

Relaxing stay

We had an enjoyable stay at the Box hop Ellwood. Beautifully decorated with lots of windows to enjoy sunlight and an amazing view. It was also over a waterfall which was really cool. Close to coffee shop, antique shopping and hiking in hocking hills. Very clean and well maintained. I would highly recommend and look forward to returning.

Amazing stay!

We absolutely loved our two night anniversary trip. The Ellwood was beautifully decorated, beds were comfortable, hot tub was great, and the kitchen had everything we needed to make our meals. We will definitely be back!

Secluded Cozy Cabin

Loved the Ellwood! It was secluded, cozy, and perfect for our quick stay. The cabin was very clean but we noticed it had a smoke smell and I know they are supposed to be smoke free (not the owners fault, I know how difficult it is to get smoke smell out). There were a couple of things we didn't love - the drive up to the cabin was essentially one way and it was difficult to see if another car was coming the opposite direction. There was a wedding one of the nights we were there and people drive recklessly on the narrow road. The only other issue we had was the hot water wasn't working in the kitchen which made it hard to clean dishes. One thing to note, it does take about 25 minutes to get to the popular hiking spots. Overall, we loved the cabin and we used the hot tub after long hikes which was perfect!

Perfect Weekend

We had an awesome time at our box hop home. We will definitely be looking to stay here again. Very thankful for the care of the staff gives a lot of thought has been put into the home.

We had a wonderful stay here! The Ellwood was clean, comfortable and a lot of fun to stay at! My kids loved the glass floor over looking the waterfall. The location is secluded, with beautiful views of the surrounding woods, but not too far a driving distance to local shopping centers. We were overall really impressed with the homes design and decor and couldnt have asked for a better vacation stay!

Amazing place!!

This place was absolutely amazing!! We loved the hot tub and the beautiful surroundings!! We would love to come back in the summer so we could hike!! The only thing I would suggest was that the furniture in the living room be more comfortable.

So cozy!

We could not have asked for a more wonderful place to enjoy a low-key Thanksgiving! The location is great - close to shops/coffee and all the main hiking trails. The hardest part was actually getting ourselves to leave the place as they have created a very cozy vibe. We will definitely stay at another box hop property again!

Ellwood for spring break

Overall our family enjoyed our stay. The Ellwood house was beautiful and well decorated. We were slightly disappointed with the quality of the kitchen appliances and cookware (tiny drip coffee maker, pots and pans that had its finish peeling, only four plates, only four cups meant we were constantly doing dishes). We were looking forward to adding the Ellwood pin to our collection but none were to be found. With a little better quality inside the Ellwood, we would give it five stars. The walk on the property to the waterfall was amazing!

Beautiful!

We had such a great time spending our anniversary here! The views were beautiful and so was The Ellwood. We had a little trouble finding it, but the Boxhop staff kindly guided us to where we needed to be. I would highly recommend staying here!

Great Getaway Location

My sister and I went here to get away for a few days and it was the perfect place! The property was clean and looks exactly as it is presented in the pictures. There is plenty to do in the area from hiking in the Hocking Hill State Park to just checking out the local area. While it was a little cold and rainy, we were still able to enjoy our time in the area. Highly recommend renting from here.
