Spectacular Sweeping Views of Acadia from a Fully Equipped 3-Bedroom House

This private, gem of a year-round house on the water with a wonderful rocky beach overlooks sailboat races, working lobster boats, the Cranberry Islands and the mountains of Acadia. The views from the deck amaze and astound, making it hard to want to leave the property.

This 15 year old house is just five minutes from the delightful village of Southwest Harbor with restaurants & shopping. Even closer, pick up fresh cooked lobster or a lobster roll (and don't for get the blueberry pie) at the end of the driveway. Sit on your deck and enjoy some of the best views on Mt. Desert, including mountains and the Cranberry Islands.

Sand Dollar Cottage is located close to the hiking trails of Acadia National Park offering many opportunities for recreation: walking, hiking, climbing biking, kayaking, sailing...or just relaxing! The nearest trails are within one mile, Wonderland and Ship Harbor. The Acadia Mountain Trailhead is just 10 minutes away. The Cadillac Mountain Entrance is a 20-minute drive from the house.

The house is very comfortable and well equipped with new furniture and linens. Guests can search for shells and sea glass on the shore in front of the house.. There is a fully equipped two bedroom guest house on the adjacent property (rented separately) offering an opportunity for a family reunion or vacation with friends.

LAYOUT: 1st Floor: Entry with bench and 1/2 bath. Great room includes living room, dining room, kitchen with top of the line appliances, granite countertops, and breakfast bar. The living room has a stone fireplace, streaming TV and bookcases. French doors lead to an open porch and a screened porch on the ocean side of the house where sailboat races, lobster boats and passing seals can be observed. Primary bedroom on this level has a new (2023) king bed and en suite bath with oversize tile shower.
SECOND LEVEL: Curved staircase leads to two large bedrooms, one with a queen size bed, the other with 2 twin beds. On the second floor, there is a shared bathroom with tub & shower.

There is a full basement in this year round house.

We've stayed in Southwest Harbor at various rental homes over the past decade and Sand Dollar Cottage is by far the best we've ever stayed at. Beautiful, well-maintained and well-appointed home situated in a setting that is magnificent, with views across the Western Way to the peaks of Acadia NP. Back porch with views of the harbor and mountains was our favorite room! Looking forward to many more stays at Sand Dollar.

Great Get-away

The property everything we had hoped for! Amazing water and island view in a quiet area, but still close to to shops & restaurants. The house was comfortable and well stocked, but our favorite spot was definitely the deck.

Clean, modern and spectacular views

The Sanddollar Cottage was exactly as pictured and perfect for our family of 6. Views of the ocean were amazing. The house was clean and well appointed with a modern kitchen, which can be hard to find on MDI. Owner was very responsive, friendly, and helpful. Will definitely stay again.

This is undoubtedly the best VRBO we've stayed at - it's a wonderful home - very clean with so many amenities (check out the shower in the first floor bedroom!) set in an amazing setting by the water and is conveniently located which makes getting around very easy. Some of the towns in Maine can get very crowded and it was so great to come home and just relax in the peace and quiet of the back deck. We loved watching the deer "family" play in the yard every day - the fawns were so delightful. If we ever get back to Maine, we'll certainly stay here!!

wonderful July 4th at Acadia

We had a wonderful week based in this lovely home for the July 4th holiday. The property manager was responsive and delightful. The location was beautiful. We loved hiking the most and are thinking about coming back because our younger son could not be with us because he was on another adventure.

Family Reunion 2025

My wife and I along with our two grown kids with their spouses rented Sanddollar cottage. My siblings and their families had other rentals in Southwest Harbor. The visit was wonderful, we loved our stay at Sanddollar. It has a million dollar view and the sunrises at 4:50ish AM are spectacular. The house is very well maintained, the master bedroom is beautiful and the shower in the master bath is the nicest I have ever used. We were sorry to have to leave.

A perfect vacation home. We were a set of grandparents, a set of parents, and a 2 1/2 year old and the house was a perfect configuration for us. The view is wonderful! Super clean. The kitchen had spices and things to help making meals easy. The home was our base for exploring Acadia and visiting Bar Harbor. The host, Anne, had great notes about hikes and local dining. Anne was super-responsive when we called and the (minor) issue was taken care of immediately. The neighborhood is quiet, which we liked. We had one stormy day (October) and we made a fire in the fireplace and enjoyed hunkering down. We had flown from the Seattle area and wanted a nicer vacation place. It was perfect.
We enjoyed our deck time.
The view. The yard was visited by deer and wild turkeys.
I didn’t mind spending time in the kitchen.

Sanddollar

Sanddollar is top few, if not the best VRBO homes we have stayed at. The home is well designed and thought out. The owners "get" the hospitality business, communicators..no issues just informative when we asked. Contacted to assure all was going well. So comfortable, clean, quiet; absolutely the best. We understand why there are so many couples who repeat. First two days, we hardly left the house, the views and peace!!!! We highly recommend the property. As close to perfection as is realistic.

Amazing !

We loved this beautiful home with an outstanding view! The location is perfect, close to everything! But far enough away to truly relax we enjoyed watching the deer visit each day! Watching the tides come in and out! And the amazing experience of watching the Aurora from the back deck! We wont forget this experience!!! We cant wait to visit again next year! The property was stunning. Exceptionally well maintained (& constructed), with all appliances functional. If you’re looking for a peaceful serene location this is the place. We really lucked out as we initially attempted to reserve a place in Bar Harbor, but the heavens were smiling on us. So many cute and interesting coves and villages to visit nearby, including Southwest Harbor, NE Harbor, Bass Harbor and Bernard (Thurston’s Lobster Pound is a must, fabulous lobster with gorgeous views of the harbor). Took a 2 hr cruise with Island Cruises, again, fabulous and provided a different perspective of the shoreline. If you visit Bar Harbor visit Salsa Verde grill for some authentic New Mexican food. Finally, Thuya Gardens are beautiful, reminiscent of Brantwood overlooking Coniston in the Lake District. All in all a wonderful week, with the comfort of this wonderful property to return to each evening; and welcoming the early mornings sat on the porch enjoying a coffee and the wildlife (see photo)

Beautiful spacious home with unbeatable view.

We took our elderly parents here for a week, and loved the fact that there was a master bedroom DOWNSTAIRS with a full bathroom, so that they did not need to go up and down any stairs to access their room. The deck has a stunning view and the neighborhood is extremely quiet. A bonus is that there's a seafood shack restaurant that you can walk to in 5 minutes. The house was clean and the owners were SUPER responsive when we needed to ask questions. Our only complaint was that the upstairs bathroom had a few quirky issues.

On the Waterfront

Enjoyed watching the boats go by and tides coming in and out. We stayed in the downstairs bedroom with bath and our friends had the upstairs beds and bath to themselves. With 2 couples, we look for equal sleeping arrangements. I rode my bike into the village, where we bought some groceries, cheese, bakery and went to dinner a couple times. The kitchen was fine for cooking. We visited nearby Bar Harbor, but we were glad to be here, and away from the crowds.

Stunning Property

This was our fourth time at the house, and we were so sad to leave. The place is always clean and inviting, and the views of the ocean and Acadia are second to none. Truly a special place, and we have made so many great memories there over the years. We hope to make it back again.

Fantastic vacation home!

What an amazing property - from the beautiful, comfortable and functional interior to the amazing views of the water from the back porch, to the beautiful forested area out front and the family of deer who visited every day. It was a perfect place from my husband and our friend and would be great for larger families. The 3 bedrooms are huge with plenty of room for kids in sleeping bags! The kitchen is lovely and well equipped and there is a large dinging room table. The back deck is great because it has an open area and a screened in porch. We would absolutely stay here again!

SIMPLY PERFECTION!

If you are searching for a spectacular and comfortable home with an EXCEPTIONAL view, search no further because you have found it! As the previous reviewer stated, the pictures of this "beautiful, upscale home can't capture the delight of being there" is spot on. This beautiful home has everything you are looking for: a beautiful view that overlooks Southwest Harbor; a gorgeous backyard, deck and screened in porch; a tastefully decorated interior first floor with a gorgeous, fully equipped modern kitchen, hardwood floors and a master bedroom that offers a comfortable bed, wonderful master bath and French doors to the screened in porch. (Just a small bit of advice, check the dryer downstairs if you don't find many dish and bathroom towels. We thought we would have to go and buy some towels but not the case. Housekeeping must have forgotten about the last load of laundry.) It was so tranquil to watch the lobster boats in the morning from bed. It truly doesn't get any better than that. The upstairs is just as beautiful with two large bedrooms and is carpeted. We absolutely loved spending time out on the deck that offered comfortable outdoor furniture and a large heating lamp. Nothing better than enjoying our breakfast and in the evening, appetizers and wine, listening to the water lap over the rocks to the shore. Whatever you are hoping for in a rental home, this home accommodates. Because we were in Acadia at the beginning of Sept, there was a full moon, and the view was amazing! We also had the pleasure of having a nightly evening walkthrough by a Mama deer and her baby and were thrilled when a bald eagle perched right on the backyard rocks to have its morning breakfast! As mentioned, this home is in Southwest Harbor but it was not a far ride to Bar Harbor or the Park. Actually, it gives you an opportunity to see more of the island by having to drive to key viewing spots at the Park. Also, because we visited Acadia in early September, Bar Harbor was not overly crowded, which was great. There is so much to do and see that we will go back to Acadia. The weather was perfect and the house as the review title states, "Simply Perfection".

Upscale new home with spectacular view!

Our family's vacation in early June was everything we hoped it would be, and more! The online pictures of this beautiful, upscale home can't capture the true delight of being there. The views are fantastic, and sunrise is pure magic with the sounds of seabirds, the tides lapping against the rocky shore, and the distant sounds of Southwest Harbor lobster boats. They make recordings of these things! Yet we experienced them in person sipping coffee on our own deck overlooking the ocean and the Cranberry Islands. This home is very comfortable and beautifully decorated, and is a perfect home base for exploring MDI. The drive to Bar Harbor and east Acadia is short and easy, but the advantage of staying near Southwest Harbor is being near great shops, restaurants, and lobster pounds without the crowds and touristy feeling. Our family rented bicycles at Southwest Cycle, and they set us up with a bike carrier that let us explore the carriage roads in Acadia, which were outstanding. We also rented canoes from nearby National Park Canoe and Kayak, and enjoyed a wonderful afternoon on Long Pond. Several nights for dinner, we brought back freshly cooked lobsters from Beal's Lobster Pound and had our own family meal with fresh corn on the cob from the local grocery. All while enjoying the wonderful view! It doesn't get better than this. We enjoyed hiking in Acadia, getting ice cream at Ben and Bill's Chocolate Emporium, and eating a fine dinner at Cafe 2 in Southwest Harbor. And a couple of mornings we stayed in, relaxing on the deck overlooking the ocean, reading, and exploring the rocky shore for shells and sand dollars. We had a wonderful family vacation, and this incredible vacation home made our time on MDI very enjoyable. Our only regret is that we live 1,500 miles away! I wish we lived closer, so we could make the trip more often.
