I stayed for two week in August, and experienced the storm. The unit was as expected. The bed was comfortable, plumbing good. The kitchen had the basics. It could use a second tea towel and wine glasses. There was a power bar for charging devices. Before and during the storm, there was no communication from the property manager. The power went out. No flashlight. At 6 am, an announcement came on the PA to evacuate due to a fire. It was chaotic. The fire was put out quickly but there was no all clear announcement and no information about what happened. Later the PA announced that the elevators were safe to use, interrupted by an announcement saying there is a fire. PA glitch. The next day, hotel staff told me that the entire block was without power and that the Ilikai had blown a transformer (cause of fire). Parts of Ilikai would be without power for several days. A generator provided some power. Stores, restaurants, the main pool were closed. I passed this news to the property manager and received a supportive response and offering to compensate me, which they did. The Ilikai has a lot of work to do on its emergency response processes. I have lost confidence in the building (old electrical) and the staff who manage it. I think the property manager was unaware of the problems until I notified them. If I were an owner, I would find this unacceptable, and I would be surprised if such a lapse in communication was not in violation of owners’ contracts with Ilikai.
