Lovely stay in a great area!

We have thoroughly enjoyed the cottage and the area! Lots of information from the owners on possible walks and activities and a very cosy cottage, also with a rainy day (chance to test the wood burning stove)! Highly recommended!

Cost cottage in lovely location

A small and cozy cottage in Allendale with beautiful gardens and a very good location. Good pubs locally, lovely river location in the Penines. Good cycling and walking and lots of Roman things to see!

Glad you enjoyed the gardens, the local facilities and some of the Roman sites. There is so much industrial archaeology in the valley for history enthusiasts.

Post lockdown getaway

We had a very enjoyable week away to recharge our batteries. A beautiful location by the river with some lovely walks.

Outstanding cottage

Our family of 4 stayed at Allen Mill Cottages in July. It is absolutely perfect - clean, full of character, and with everything you need for a comfortable stay. Lovely.

Great weekend

Excellent property in very tranquil surroundings. Lovely card left for us by the owners for our friend's 75th birthday. Absolutely gorgeous garden area and very private. Only small criticism was that some of the crockery and oven weren't as clean as they should have been.

Short stay in Northumberland

Lovely property in a very pretty location. Well stocked with everything you could need for a break. Lots of books and maps to plan outings. Friendly and helpful next door neighbours. Well placed for trips to the Roman wall and Kielder water. Weather was mostly kind. Scenery was spectacular. Love this area.

Family visit

Ideal location for visiting my family. I had a great stay, easy walking along the riverside. I found the double mattress very hard and uncomfortable for me personally. Lovely gardens, enjoyed the sunshine lounging on the decking. Very peaceful.

Our stay was relaxing which reflects the quiet nature of Allendale Town and its surrounding area. The cottage has been thoughtfully modernised with a kitchen that is both effective in use of space and stylishly fitted out, along with lots of useful equipment. In addition, the hosts very kindly provided "fallback provisions" (e.g. tinned beans, cereal, crackers) and the cottage has plenty of books, music CDs and maps which makes it feel like being in someone's home, rather than just in a "Let". The hosts also have a good eye for curios and have furnished the cottage with miscellaneous antique items which add to the cosy charm. Access to the cottage is easy and the advice from the hosts was simple to follow; and the Visitor Guide was equally helpful and detailed. We saw Glenn from next door (one of the neighbours who act as on-hand agents whilst the hosts are not present) who was very friendly and confirmed useful things like where to park and how to open the door to the cottage.Across the bridge is a handy restaurant - Spice Valley (an Indian takeaway) - which has a basic unlicenced restaurant but who food (both "in" and "out") was very tasty whilst not being "standard curry". Walking along the riverside either way from the cottage (to Catton or Allendale Town) was simple, with a climb at either end. In both cases, sitting having a drink outside the pub after the climb was very sociable and reflected the very friendly conversations we had with Allendale locals generally.

Comfy cottage.

Warm and cosy cottage. Smart kitchen, comfortable beds and ‘homely’ feel. Lots of books/maps of the area which is beautiful, farmland and close to glorious moors. Half an hour to Vindalanda and Hadrian’s wall. Large gardens opposite cottage pretty riverside walks.

Very well appointed house with amazing gardens

Very well equipped home. Comfortable and with everything you might need for a holiday and more beside. The three gardens and summerhouse are a real attraction - our grandchildren visited for a day and really enjoyed them. The owner was helpful - the only glitch being that communication using the VRBO system didn't seem to function properly so we communicated with the owner directly by email

Lovely cottage in stunning country location, felt like home from home

From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel very welcome. The cottage was perfect for our family of four, and we felt at home straight away. The cottage had everything we needed and all the facilities were excellent. Particularly enjoyed the walk in shower. We also made use of the large beautiful garden and summer house during the evenings and had several BBQs while relaxing with a glass or two of wine. The views from the property are stunning, and the whole area is amazing. Overall we had a wonderful two week holiday at your cottage, and enjoyed every minute.

Wonderful cottage in great location

A real home from home in this lovely cosy cottage. We loved the range of games, books and music and our boys particularly liked having access to the football pitch immediately behind the house and the huge gardens for running around. The kitchen is really well equipped. Allendale itself is a handsome village with a brilliant independent supermarket and the cottage is only a couple of minutes walk from a curry house - happy days! Superb communication from our hosts with lots of ideas for activities, walks and days out. Thank you David and Ruth for a wonderful holiday!

A truly wonderful place to stay

This is one of the loveliest cottages we have stayed in and had everything we could possibly want for a fantastic holiday. The cottage itself is spacious, with a comfortable lounge just perfect for relaxing in. The kitchen is well equipped and a pleasure to cook in, while the bedrooms are spacious and pleasant. That's just the beginning, though. Directly behind the cottage is the local sports field, with a football pitch and tennis courts. Staying at the cottage we had access to all of this, which kept our sons very happy indeed. Then, a short hop over the (very quiet) road and you are in a lovely garden, complete with summerhouse, space to dine outside and a lawn area to play badminton and croquet. Allendale is a pleasant town with shops, a cafe and a small art gallery showing work by local artists working there. A short drive away is Hadrian's Wall, with numerous sites to visit and there are walks galore both from the cottage and further afield. The hosts, David and Ruth, were very helpful indeed and offered plenty of suggestions for days out and things to see in the local area. We spent a wonderfully relaxing week at the cottage and our one regret is that we only booked for one week! Needless to say we can't wait to return to this wonderful spot.

Lovely cottage and gardens. Well equipped. Easy parking. The hosts have clearly given a lot of thought to what guests might need during their stay. We enjoyed the interesting mix of books, photos and artwork. Location is quiet with immediate nice walks along the river Allen. Would definitely stay again.

Allendale Challenge

We stayed here while competing in the Allendale Challenge. We thought the cottage was great. Just the right size for 4 adults. Lovely cosy and warm. The log burner was very welcoming seen as it had snowed. In addition to the bathroom, there’s a downstairs loo and wet room which served us very well. Everything you could need to make your stay very pleasant. A short walk via the road or through the woods to the town where there are two pubs. We preferred the Golden Lion (fantastic chips!). There’s a cafe and a coop for supplies! There’s also a curry house closer to home to eat in or take away. Beautiful views up on the hills. Great stay and would recommend. A summer trip would be nice to enjoy their beautiful garden and summer house. Thank you David and Ruth.

Relaxing summer break

We had a lovely break at Allenmill cottage. The cottage was cosy and well equipped. We enjoyed the garden and made good use of the fantastic summer house. Allendale itself is beautiful and we will definitely be back to explore more. John and Amanda

Great place in a great location. We had a great week

Lovely walk along the trivet into Allendale. Great curry house and local brewery around the corner. Lovely tennis courts and football pitches behind the house. Can’t beat the location. Gardens are beautiful and made good use of the Summerhouse. Would love to stay again.

Cozy well equipped cottage

Small cottage but big enough for 4 adults (second bedroom is a twin) and is very cozy. Beds comfortable. Lovely wood burner and well equipped kitchen. More freezer space would have been useful but understand the challenge of space. Stairs to first floor are on the steep side which may pose a problem for some. Parking is easy. It is in walking distance of Allendale and there are a number of nice walks from the cottage. Lovely part of Northumberland. Welcome from the owner and the people who look after the cottage was great and there were a number of thoughtful touches. Instructions were detailed and clear.
