Pagaldegarai is an elegant palace, decorated with exquisite taste, divided in four floors, six bedrooms, five bathrooms and a toilet. In total habitable 600 square meters surrounded by 5.500 square meters of garden, that for sure will provide you a memorable stay. On the ground floor: the sports area and the parking. You will find a little Basque pediment to play squash, frontennis or Basque pelota; exercise bikes, regular mountain bikes and a dart game. At the garage there is parking place for two vehicles. On the first floor there are the most common areas: brand new kitchen and the eating room, the living room with sofas and TV, a relaxing area with sofas in front of the chimney. All of them are overlooking the splendid little forest surrounding the building. On this floor you will also have a bathroom so there is no need to use the stairs. On the second floor there are six bedrooms, two of them equipped with double bed and bathroom inside the room. Other three rooms are double-sing

The house was beautiful; we were impressed by the decor and the size of the rooms. The kitchen was well-equipped, and the number of bathrooms ensured a comfortable stay for everyone. The only downside was a musty smell, which I think was due to the rainy weather we experienced. The host was very friendly and helpful.

Sept in San sebastian

We are six couples in our sixties and seventies. We had a wonderful week in oiartzun, the week before the film festival in San sebastian. We went to botanic garden in Asia, hiked the camino in pasajes de san Juan, went to the beach in hondarribia and hendaye and san sebastian, ate pinxtos like crazy, played handball in the court downstairs, made wonderful dinners, enjoyed all the space, and had a terrific time. Jose was great.

Amazing villa, amazing stay!

We loved this house. We had a party of 5 adults and 4 kids. The grounds were perfect for the kids to run around and the adults to drink wine. Everything about the place was wonderful. It was luxurious, comfortable, well stocked and truly unique. The location is ideal - we loved walking to the quaint town of Oiartzun and the short drive to the fabulous streets San Sebastian. The owner, Joxeanjel, is lovely and very helpful. We accidentally left a phone, a kindle and a back pack at the house and he happily sent back to us in the states. He is awesome! Thank you!

Perfect vacation home!

This house is fantastic! The living area has a variety of rooms, for reading, watching television, using the internet (yes, it has wifi) or having a conversation or two with dear friends. The kitchen was very well equipped, with a good size clothes washer and dryer, and a dishwasher. Plenty of dishes, pots, pans, and cooking utensils made cooking easy, although the location is near so many excellent restaurants we cooked less than we usually do. We are a mixed group, two couples from England, two from the USA, and one from Sweden. We have been meeting somewhere for a vacation every year or so since 2009 and we all agree this is our favorite house! Joxe is a great host as well, with a table full of recommendations for things to do and see nearby.

Wonderful stay in an elegant, very high end home

We united family of 10 adults and 4 little kids (converging from North America and Europe) for a wonderful week at Pagaldegarai Etxea. We were greeted by Joxeanjel, who is friendly and professional, and he gave us a tour (as one would give friends a tour) of the immaculately clean house. The finishings are all extremely high end, and the house is equipped with everything we needed - and more - with the very hospitable owners leaving their lovely glasses, plates, books etc for use by their guests. We cooked for the big group every night in the wonderful kitchen, and had many happy "aperitifs" in the garden while the kids loved running around and playing soccer (all fenced in, very safe). There is a great bike/running trail just outside the gates (and bikes for use at the house). The game room in the basement (complete with a sort of Basque squash court) was a huge hit with the kids and got a lot of use. Lots of bedrooms, all very nicely appointed, with lots of bathrooms (a must with all the people we had in the house, and we never ran out of hot water!). There is no shortage of spectacular day trips in the area, on both the French and Spanish side of Basque country. All told, we had a wonderful trip, and would have no hesitation in recommending this beautiful rental to friends.

A wonderful stay

As I went to write this review, I took a look at the pictures posted of this beautiful house and smiled recalling how much we enjoyed our stay here. As lovely as the pictures are, the house exceeded our expectations. Six of us stayed for a week recently, and enjoyed our selves immensely. We ate breakfast each morning outside on the terrace at the back, and each evening retired there to have a drink while planning the next day. Lots to do, being within an easy drive of Bilbao, San Sebastian, Pamplona, St Jean de Luz and the beautiful coastal drives. The house is very comfortable and very clean, with a wonderfully equipped kitchen, the grounds are large and the lawns and trees were immaculately trimmed. Our host Joxeanjel was gracious and welcoming, and took a lot of time helping us to settle in, promptly re-appearing when the wifi did not immediately come up, solving the problem by contacting the service provider, and getting service sorted out almost immediately. He made it clear that we should call if anything else was needed, but nothing was. We had an excellent dinner just down the hill at Zuberoa. Just a note that in finding the house, our GPS systems (both Garmin) could not locate it, but when we got home and programed it into our Tom-Tom, it had no trouble. But it did not matter too much, one car managed to luck into finding the house and our host just jumped into his vehicle and drove out to escort the other car to the house from the village. A wonderful house and a great holiday. Thanks!

This house was perfect for the 10 of us ... Host was great ... Bus to take you downtown San Sebastian right out side ... Easy drive to Bilbao and Guggenheim Museum ... Everything in this elegant house worked and everybody loved it ... Zuberoa Restaurante is within walking distance and it is a wonderful place to eat ... Service and food were fantastic ... This is a Michelin starred restaurante ... Five stars for this house (palace) and we would return ... Thank you for letting us stay here.

Impressive home, to relax and unwind.

We have a wonderful few days in this beautiful house. Our party of nine adults had plenty of space to relax and unwind. All rooms are large with comfortable beds and excellent bath and shower facilities. We did a lot of cooking during our stay, and found the kitchen to be well stocked with good equipment for almost any meal. The host was very understandable with our late arrival thanks to a delayed flight, even going so far as to leave us with an evening snack when we final got there. The property is very private and surrounded by trees on all sides. It sits on the side a hill so the tress do not obscure the view of the country side . to much. The house is only about 20 mins drive from downtown San Sebastien and there is a large supermarket about 3 mins drive away. Getting to the house from Bilbao airport is very simple, and takes just over an hour.

Incredible House!

We had an excellent time staying in this magnificent house. As you can see by the pictures, there are many rooms as well as areas for hanging out, reading a book, enjoying a cocktail, or taking a nap! (my personal favorite was the hammock =). The house is truly a masterpiece and the owner Jose does a fantastic job taking care of it. Jose was an excellent host, answered all our questions, and even helped us make dinner reservations we we arrived late on the first night. He was available whenever we needed him. This area of Pais Vasco is gorgeous with tons of small villages, beaches, pintxo bars, and hiking paths explore. The town of Oiartzun is quaint with friendly locals eager to chat and explain their rich culture and history. I will for sure be back at some point in my life!

Fantastic!!

We had a wonderful time at this fantastic place. If you are coming to the San Sebastián area I heartily recommend you use this place as a base. The host, Joxeanjel was charming and could not do enough for us. The house itself is secluded, secure with lovely grounds. The facilities are excellent with all possible needs catered for. Joxeanjel also recommended a visit to Zuberoa, a wonderful, charming Michelin Star restaurant within two minutes' walk of the house. A lovely, small discreet restaurant with a nice homely feel, lovely relaxed service from a very well-informed, friendly team who put us at ease. I particularly liked the fact that they had an extensive wine list (book!) with wines to suit every budget, not always the case in 'fine dining' restaurants and were so helpful in helping us make the right choice. And the food was amazing too! 😊. The house is around a 20 minute drive to the heart of the beautiful San Sebastián and its beaches. The house is surrounded by lovely countryside with lots of countryside walk and hill walks. There is a 15km cycle path which runs close by which takes priority over the cars. Excellent! All in all the perfect escape for a large family or group (we were 12) Thank You!

"Pagaldegarai" was simply fantastic!

The house and the grounds are ideally located, spacious, well maintained and clean. The property owner, Jose, was very gracious and responsive. He asked us to make ourselves at home -- and that's what we did! The location is great for taking day trips to explore the beautiful Basque country. This is an absolutely beautiful place in the world. We had a wonderful time and highly recommend it for family and friends wishing to stay in a large comfortable home with 6 bedrooms. Our party was 9 adults and the house offered many spacious public rooms, including a beautiful dining room, library, eat-in kitchen and several private sitting and patio areas. There is also a wonderful walking path bordering the house that takes you in both directions to fun excursions in the picturesque town of Oiartzun. It was very easy to fully enjoy ourselves. We would love to stay here again the next time we visit!

We felt like royalty!

From the very first moment when Joxe met us as we drove up we knew we were going to enjoy our time in his beautiful villa. We are a three generational family with an age range of 11 to 84 years. There was plenty of space for all to enjoy this well appointed home with its fine woodwork, cozy reading areas, lovely outdoor area and lawn and a kitchen that would delight anyone wishing to prepare a simple snack or cook a gourmet dinner. It is located in a peaceful neighborhood with a fantastic supermarket a short drive away. I would advise taking the bus at the nearby stop to visit San Sebastián if going in high season or a weekend. Our only frustration visiting this part of Spain was the parking. The location is ideal for visiting the beaches where our family enjoyed surfing, swimming and boogie boarding. The nearby towns are lovely with their narrow, winding streets and frequent pintxos restaurants. We enjoyed our visits to Bilbao and the Guggenheim Museum. After seeing Picasso's Guernica in Madrid we wanted to drive to Guernica to see the town that inspired his painting. The Peace Museum vividly describes the 1937 bombing. Being located near a walking/biking path was ideal, and various family members took advantage of the house bikes to ride on the trail. Some also rented bikes in San Sebastián. We enjoyed short walks and hikes and our grandchildren swam in the nearby community swimming pool. Our only regret was that we wished we could have stayed longer in this attractive, comfortable home.

Una estancia maravillosa a repetir!

Estuvimos en esta casa maravillosa durante cinco días. Éramos ocho adultos y dos niños pequeños y todo estuvo perfecto. La casa es fantástica, está impecable, totalmente equipada y decorada de forma cálida y acogedora. Se divide en tres plantas con amplios espacios para el ocio y el descanso. Las habitaciones son grandes y las camas comodísimas. Todo está muy cuidado. El dueño es encantador y muy atento y está disponible las 24 horas del día. La situación es estupenda, resulta fácil llegar y está al lado de Hondarribia, San Sebastián o San Juan de Luz, parajes todos espectaculares. Esperamos con mucha ilusión repetir la experiencia.

grand country house

Nine of us arrived from Australia, Italy and Colombia to a very warm welcome from our host Joxeanjel. His home is meticulously presented and luxuriously appointed near Oiartzun with the Camino de Santiago and the old silver mine railway bike track passing by the front gates. We loved the barbecue facilities, the bicycles, the countryside and of course the wonderful food available in the Basque region. My only regret, we didn't make it to Zuberoa. I would highly recommend this property to families and groups.

Thank you, your house made our stay special!

The location is very good, in few minutes you are on the beach, the house was very clean and well-maintained. The owner is very friendly and helpful. We are planning to go back there next year! It was a wonderful experience! My little son had a lot of space to play, it feels like home to us!

Magnifique,immense et Luxueuse!

J'avais réservé la Maison pour un Week-End prolongé avec une dizaine d'amis. Je n'ai pas été déçu! L'hôte est adorable et hyper flexible, la maison est sublime, luxueuse et immense! En famille ou entre amis, tout y est, même un vrai terrain de jeu de Paume! (La cuisine est aussi un petit bijoux) La maison est un tout petit peu en retrait de San Sebastian mais les services de taxis sont tellement efficaces qu'on ne s'en rend même pas compte. Bref, un Week-end magnifique qui me donne très envie de recommander cette maison avec un rapport qualité/prix imbattable.

A luxurious yet cozy house

Our stay at Pagaldegarai was perfect - the house is very spacious and all 12 of us were very comfortable. Its impressive size does not prevent it from feeling like a real home. It has a large dining room and living room, as well as a big private yard, so we could easily spend time together or find our peace and quiet separately in its many nooks and corners. The kitchen is very well-equipped, so you can shop around for the great produce of Basque country and cook your own tasty meals. The house also has an impressive library. The surrounding area is quiet and rural - there's a lovely hiking/bicycle trail right outside the front gate. The host, Joxe Angel, was very helpful in providing everything we needed - including recommendations for nearby restaurants. A very recommended stay!

Perfect vacation home for three or more couples

We found the home to be even more than the listing described and perfectly comfortable for our three couples. It was clean and well-maintained and the wifi worked flawlessly. Joxeangel was the perfect host - there when needed, but not bothersome at all. We would recommend this property to anyone. We visited many sights in the area from Bayonne to Bilbao and everything in between. Our particular favorites among the many restaurants were Casa Camara in Pasai Donibane, Zuberoa just down the hill from this property, La Grange in Bayonne, Cafe Jean in Biarritz, Parrillada de Mariscos in Donostia, Alameda in Hondarribi, La Gastroteca De Santiago in Madrid, and Sacha in Madrid. We enjoyed the architecture of Bilbao's Guggenheim, and the tasting menu at it's restaurant Nerua was a trip in itself. Very nice that the paved hiking/biking trail up into the mountain passes in front of the house. Bakery, grocery and wine shopping is within five minutes.

DESDE EL INICIO EMPIEZA LA HOSPITALIDAD....

HOLA!. Recomiendo ampliamente este lugar!! Nunca pensé que el trato del dueño de está casa fuera tan humano y tan cálido. Mandé mi solicitud de reserva por curiosidad, pero desde elinstante que joxeanjel me antendió sentí su entusiasmo por ayudarme a realmente vivir la experiencia de estar no sólo en su villa sino en el PAIS VASCO. Joxeanjel nos hizo pensar en dejarnos llevar , y cambiar nuestro plan de vacaciones para tener una estancia más larga este diciembre en San Sebastián. Ayer escribi yen menos de 24 horas ya estaba siendo atendida por TELEFONO!. El trato de joxeanjel, la calidad de la casa, la accesibilidad en cuanto a la economía, me hizo sentir que vale la pena. Un trato así desde el inicio claro que debe acabar en algo muy muy bueno!!! FELICIDADES, NOS VEMOS PRONTO.

Fantástica!!

Acabamos de regresar de pasar una semana en esta estupenda casa. Éramos 13 de familia. Ha sido una estancia extraordinaria. La casa es tal y como se puede ver en las fotos. Fantástica. Un autentico palacete, increíblemente mantenida y equipada: Las habitaciones, los baños, cocina, los múltiples salones, bicicletas, cunas, una fantástica barbacoa. Una gozada. Joxeanjel, atento y amable desde el primer mail que nos enviamos, siempre dispuesto a hacerte la estancia aún más agradable. Han sido sin duda unas vacaciones extraordinarias que recomiendo a todo el mundo y que esperamos poder repetir muy pronto. Muchas gracias por todo!!!

Family escape

We spent a wonderful 2.5 weeks at this property near San Sebastian. The host/owner was super helpful and enthusiastic about helping us make the most of our stay-including finding a wonderful babysitter. The property is close to both San Sebastian (where we did our shopping at the markets, went to the beach and ate many great meals) and Hondarribia, where you can go for tapas in the evening and also go to the beach. But there is no need to go this far for the basics as there are big supermarkets nearby as well as local restaurants, all of which the owner will tell you about. Nearby is a beautiful walking trail and the house even has bikes that can be used by guests. At the top of the hill is a bakery and a vending machine that sells fresh local milk!! It is a very secure and private spot with locking gates, so need to worry about any young children finding there way off - we were with our 2.5 year old and 4 month old. They even had a high chair and 2 cribs for us! Definitely a kid-friendly place. The house itself was in very good condition with lots of space to relax. We would definitely consider returning to this beautiful spot.

Everything we expected and more.

My family arrived from Miami and Boston with the idea of staying in a comfortable and centrally located area of Northern Spain. The palace "Pagaldegarai" was perfect. The owner, Joxeanjel met us as scheduled at the house and welcomed us with some delicious bread and some treats to start our adventure. He was a gracious host and explained all the details of his most beautiful and comfortable and fully equipped house. There were 9 people in our group and there was plenty of room and comfort for all. We rented a car to take many trips during the week. from Oiartzun, we were a short 2 hour drive to many interesting places we visited. San Sebastian and France was only 20 minutes away. Biaritz, Lourdes, Santander,, Bilbao, the Rioja wine region, Burgos, Santillana are only day trips with time to come home for dinner or Pinxos (Tapas) and wine. After 8 great days we left the house to continue our trip to Asturias and Galicia in western Spain. My family and I loved the idea of staying in a house and taking these trips to enjoy the area we are visiting and will surely do it again. I highly recommend this house for any family or group interested in visiting this area of Northern Spain. Bill from Miami, Florida
