Old Supper Club turned into a lodge with all the modern conveniences! - Stay where Al Capone, John Dillinger and his gang did in the late 1920’s and early 1930’s. Their gang would park their convoy of Ford Model Ts near the lake on a dirt road that now forms 240th Avenue. Other Highlights: The Calderwood Lodge also contains a great deal of history. The Lodge was constructed by Charles Calder between 1918 and 1922. During these five years of construction, Calder used natural stone and lumber from the surrounding Bone Lake region to build the lodge. Calder grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he owned a successful van and storage business. Many of the profits from the van and storage business were reinvested into land along Bone Lake. By 1891, Calder acquired a total of 720 acres on the shore of Bone Lake. At the time, the land had an estimated value of $22,000.
Throughout the roaring twenties and up until the Great Depression, the lodge consisted of 14 rooms and 7 additional cabins. The wealthy came from all parts of the Midwest –Chicago, Milwaukee, Iowa, and the Twin Cities–to stay at the famous lodge. Guests arrived in Luck by train, where they were then chauffeured to the lodge. The lodge provided the wealthy guests with expensive dinners, reaching prices as high as $6 a plate (or $98 in 2018 dollars). Furthermore, the water in the springs contained high levels of lithium, which had high medicinal value during the 1920’s. Consequently, many customers arrived with large containers so that they could bring the water home with them.
Although the prohibition began in 1920, strong evidence suggests that the lodge continued to serve alcohol. The alcohol was hidden across the lake in concrete storage vaults. Boats transported the alcohol across the lake.
The lodge’s fabulous reputation caused the world’s most notorious gang members to visit it. In the late 1920’s, Al Capone frequently stayed at the lodge with different friends. John Dillinger and his gang also stayed at the lodge in the late 1920’s and early 1930’s. Dillinger’s gang would park their convoy of Ford Model Ts near the lake on a dirt road that now forms 240th Avenue. Additionally, gang leader Ma Barker and criminal Alvin Karpas were also known to have stopped in the lodge during their trips to Fremsted Lake in Webster, Wisconsin.

We stayed at the lodge with 15 family members, while celebrating various birthdays and anniversaries. This place was perfect for this size gathering— plenty of room to spread out and not be on top of each other, but also many spaces around the building/property where we could all be together! The bar area was so fun and the golf simulator was incredible to have on site. Our golfers were very happy. :) We had plenty of beds for everyone and the kids enjoyed the bunk rooms with their cousins. The lake was lovely with not a lot of boat traffic. We rented a pontoon from a local business and had wonderful days out on the water. The newly added sauna was a nice bonus.Definitely would recommend bringing the whole fam to stay here!!

This property is definitely for groups that appreciate the rustic charm and history. Our group of 13, ages 7 to 68 enjoyed it. Things that worked for us:7 bedrooms, lots of tables for games and dining, lots of space to simply spread out, no close neighbors on one side, ample parking on quiet street, a quick response from the host on a small issue, grandkids could catch fish off the pier, air conditioning (was a hot week), good size frig, stove and cooking space, grills, also appreciated the ample sized dumpster to dispose of our trash.Things to mention if considering: Grandkids needed water shoes to swim on shoreline, the water is a hike from lodge down stairs, you will get your exercise, not a lot of storage in kitchen for the things you bring, I did utilize the stair landing off the kitchen for coolers and boxes, the mature trees and bugs really mess up the upper and lower decks, we did not use that area, although kitchen is stocked, like many rentals, guests move things and leave things behind making quite a mess for the next group. Personally I like to bring what I need and take what I brought. Frig was nice and empty when we arrived but some cabinets had oils and seasonings etc., we tried to be respectful with the dog we brought, the neighbors dog was over several times, it did not bother us but some might have a problem. We had a good week, family made some memories, glad we got to experience The Calderwood.
