Senglea, known locally as L-Isla, is one of Malta’s most historic and atmospheric towns, set on a narrow peninsula overlooking the Grand Harbour. Founded in the 16th century by the Knights of St John and named after Grand Master Claude de la Sengle, the city played a heroic role during the Great Siege of 1565 and earned the title Civitas Invicta — the Unconquered City. Though heavily damaged during World War II, Senglea was rebuilt and remains a proud, close-knit community. Today, Senglea offers an authentic glimpse into everyday Maltese life. Quiet limestone streets, traditional houses with colourful wooden balconies, local cafés and waterfront promenades create a relaxed, lived-in atmosphere. The marina and harbour provide stunning views of Valletta and the surrounding fortifications, while water taxis offer easy access across the harbour.
