East Wind at Vosburgh’s Custom Cabin Rentals is a distinctive hilltop cabin overlooking Moose Lake and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). Known for its beautiful custom woodwork, vaulted ceiling, open design and large screened porch, East Wind is a comfortable Northwoods retreat for families, anglers, paddlers and anyone looking for a peaceful escape near Ely.
Best of all, you’ll be staying at one of the area’s few cabin resorts located directly on a BWCAW entry lake. Vosburgh’s sits on Moose Lake—Entry Point 25—so you can paddle or boat from our landing directly into the Boundary Waters without driving or shuttling to another launch.
East Wind is located high above our central waterfront, giving the cabin beautiful views across Moose Lake toward the wilderness beyond. It is not directly on the shoreline. Guests can walk down the resort driveway or make the short two-minute drive to our central landing, docks and boathouse.
THE CABIN
East Wind sleeps up to seven guests with two bedrooms plus a loft. The cabin’s vaulted ceiling and extensive natural woodwork create an open, warm and distinctly Northwoods feel.
The main living area is designed for relaxing together after a day outside, with large windows bringing in natural light and views of the surrounding forest and lake. A full kitchen makes it easy to prepare meals throughout your stay.
One of East Wind’s favorite features is its large screened porch overlooking Moose Lake. It’s a wonderful place for morning coffee, family meals, reading a book, listening to loons or simply watching the changing light over the water.
The hilltop setting gives East Wind a sense of privacy while still providing easy access to all of the shared amenities at our family-run resort.
DIRECT ACCESS TO THE BOUNDARY WATERS
One of the things that truly sets Vosburgh’s apart is our location.
We are located directly on Moose Lake, BWCAW Entry Point 25. From our central landing, you can launch a canoe or boat and travel directly into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
There is no need to load your canoe onto the car each morning or drive to another entry point. Simply head down to the waterfront and start exploring.
This makes East Wind an excellent basecamp for guests who want to experience canoe country while still returning each evening to a comfortable cabin, full kitchen and warm bed.
Take a day paddle into the BWCAW, spend the day fishing the Moose Lake chain, go swimming from the docks or simply relax at the resort and enjoy the water.
Guests planning an overnight trip into the BWCAW are responsible for obtaining any required permits. We’re happy to share local knowledge and help point you toward resources for planning your adventure.
BOAT & CANOE INCLUDED WITH WEEKLY STAYS
Stays of seven nights or longer include use of a 16-foot Lund fishing boat and canoe.
Motor rentals are available separately. Guests are also welcome to bring their own motor of 25 hp or less.
Additional boating and fishing equipment may be available, including trolling motors, depth finders and canoes. Live bait and other fishing necessities are also available at the resort.
Our central waterfront includes shared docks, a boathouse and a screened fish-cleaning house, making East Wind a great choice for anglers.
FISHING ON MOOSE LAKE
Moose Lake and the surrounding chain offer excellent Northwoods fishing opportunities. Depending on the season and location, anglers can pursue walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass and lake trout in the surrounding waters.
Bring your own gear or take advantage of the boats, motors and fishing amenities available at the resort.
Our family has spent generations on Moose Lake, and we’re always happy to share local knowledge and help guests get oriented.
MORE THAN THE BOUNDARY WATERS
There is plenty to do when you aren’t on the water.
East Wind makes an excellent home base for exploring some of the beautiful hiking trails and natural areas around Ely. Nearby options include Kawishiwi Falls and the Secret/Blackstone trail system, along with many other opportunities for hiking, paddling, biking and wildlife watching.
Downtown Ely is also an easy drive from the resort, where you’ll find restaurants, shops, outfitters and local attractions.
Or skip the itinerary altogether. Swim from the docks, read on the screened porch, take an evening boat ride, watch for wildlife and listen for loons as the sun goes down.
A GREAT FAMILY BASECAMP
East Wind is particularly well suited for families who want to introduce their children to the Boundary Waters without committing to a full wilderness camping trip.
Spend a morning paddling into the BWCAW, come back to the cabin for lunch, swim from the docks in the afternoon and enjoy dinner together on the screened porch.
The combination of wilderness access and cabin comfort makes it easy for families to experience canoe country at their own pace.
Please remember that Moose Lake is a natural lake rather than a developed swimming facility. Children should always be supervised around the water and docks.
A FAMILY-RUN RESORT WITH GENERATIONS OF HISTORY
Vosburgh’s Custom Cabin Rentals isn’t a collection of anonymous vacation rentals. We are a family-run Northwoods resort with generations of history on Moose Lake.
Our family has welcomed visitors to this remarkable part of northern Minnesota for decades, and we continue to enjoy helping guests experience the lake, the Boundary Waters and the Ely area.
We’re happy to answer questions, share fishing and paddling knowledge, suggest nearby hikes and help guests make the most of their stay.
The property includes multiple cabins, so East Wind is not an isolated private home. Guests have their own private cabin while sharing our central waterfront, docks, landing, boathouse and other resort amenities with guests staying in our other cabins.
For many of our returning guests, that traditional resort atmosphere is part of what makes a week at Vosburgh’s special.
WIFI, CELL SERVICE & UNPLUGGING
Internet and cell service in this remote part of the Northwoods may be more limited than what you are accustomed to at home. Satellite internet is available on the property, but guests should not expect the same connectivity they might find in town.
For many guests, that’s part of the experience.
East Wind is a place to put down the phone, drink coffee on the screened porch, spend the day outside and reconnect with family and friends.
PETS
East Wind is pet-friendly.
Pets must be supervised and may not be left unattended in the cabin. Please review our current pet policies when booking and remember that this is a wilderness setting with wildlife nearby.
WHAT TO BRING
Bed linens and blankets are provided. Guests should bring their own bath and kitchen towels, personal toiletries, food and any specialized outdoor or fishing equipment they plan to use.
Because East Wind has a full kitchen, many guests bring groceries and prepare most of their meals at the cabin.
SEASON & STAYS
Vosburgh’s operates seasonally, generally from May through October.
Most summer reservations are Saturday-to-Saturday, reflecting the traditional week-at-the-lake experience our guests have enjoyed for generations. More flexible stays may be available depending on the time of year and availability.
Please contact us if your dates don’t fit a traditional weekly stay—we may be able to accommodate you, particularly during the shoulder seasons.
KNOW BEFORE YOU BOOK
East Wind is a hilltop cabin and is not directly on the shoreline. Our central waterfront is an easy walk down the resort driveway or approximately a two-minute drive from the cabin.
Our waterfront, docks, boathouse and fish-cleaning facilities are shared with guests from our other cabins.
This is a family-run wilderness resort rather than a luxury hotel. If you’re looking for room service, a swimming pool and perfect cell reception, we probably aren’t the right fit.
If you’re looking for beautiful views, loons in the morning, excellent fishing, days on the water, a comfortable cabin and the ability to paddle directly into the Boundary Waters from the resort, you’ve come to the right place.
YOUR NORTHWOODS BASECAMP
Wake up overlooking Moose Lake. Have coffee on the screened porch. Spend the morning fishing or paddling directly into the BWCAW. Hike to a waterfall in the afternoon, swim from the docks, then return to East Wind for dinner and a quiet evening above the lake.
Whether you come for a family vacation, fishing trip, Boundary Waters adventure or simply a week away from the noise of everyday life, East Wind offers something increasingly difficult to find: a comfortable cabin at a traditional family-run resort with wilderness access right from the property.
Come make East Wind your basecamp for a week on Moose Lake.
