Hale Alaula, or House of the Sunset Glow, is a renovated cottage located right on a beautiful sandy beach in sunny Puako. As you can see from the pictures, the house is full of modern and newly furnished appliances and furniture. The master bedroom has a king size bed with it's own half bathroom and outdoor shower. Walk out the door from the bedroom into an outdoor shower surrounded by bamboo. A full bathroom is attached to the living room area where the punee sleeps one. Wake up and go to sleep with views of the morning glow and unbelievable sunsets. The living room is equipped with one punee (Hawaiian day bed) that can sleep one person. The kitchen is fully equipped with all stainless steel appliances including a oven, refrigerator, dishwasher, and microwave. From the kitchen you can walk out onto the lanai and eat your meals on a new outdoor table.

Coral washes up on the Puako's shores and creates a beautiful white sanded beach. The beach in front of Hale Alaula is far enough from any beach access point that few visitors wander by, providing you with plenty of privacy while still allowing you to enjoy the coastline. Just a few doors up shore is an easy access point to climb into the warm Hawaiian waters at the perfect location to experience some of Hawaii's best snorkeling. Directly in front of the beach access point are some undersea arches that are fun to swim around, over, and under. The reef is full of a plethora of different species of fish, starfish, eels, and sometimes rays. Occasionally a pod of dolphins will swim by, and in the winter months you can see the humpback whales breach the surface and hear their song under the water.

Puako is famous for its abundance of sea turtles, and just north of Hale Alaula is the "turtle cleaning station," where sea turtles go to let the yellow tang fish to pick algae off of their shells. Take a walk up the shore and you're sure to see plenty of turtles basking in the shallow waters or napping in the sun.

Hale Alaula is the perfect Hawaiian home to experience the serenity of the island and the wonders it has to offer, both on land and in the sea.

We had a wonderful and relaxing stay, house was super well equipped. We never go out for dinner when we are in Hawaii so a well set up kitchen and grill are very important for us. Breakfast every morning with the sound of the surf as the sun rose over Mauna Kea and Maui emerged from the mist, and dinner outside every night as the last glow disappeared. We've been renting oceanfront houses in Puako since 2012 and this is one of the best.

Wonderful oceanfront property in the Puako area! We really loved staying in this area. It felt very isolated but in reality sites and amenities were super close by. The General Store down the street was awesome for treats and necessities, and a Foodland was just a 10-15 minutes drive away. The sunsets were spectacular, and as a bonus, we had honu (green sea turtles) come to visit us every night. Great spot for chilling out, snorkeling, walking/running. The house was very comfortable and had everything we needed - from cooking supplies to beach gear. Both the owner and property manager were very helpful and communicative. We would stay again for sure!

Awesome Vacation

We had a wonderful relaxing time at this property! The home was clean, comfortable and quiet. The sunsets were amazing as was the yard and rather private beach area.The little market (Puako Store) was handy and helpful with whale watching and snorkeling tours.The only thing I would recommend is a better AC systemā€”the remote didnā€™t work on the unit and you can only have AC in one bedroom.

We loved our stay here. We donā€™t like the hotel scene so this place is well equipped for cooking and enjoying the local culture and area or just hanging out. The location is perfect. We would definitely come again!

Older cottage right on the tide pools. Excellent snorkeling at the access 2 houses south. House has louvers on all sides to capture the tradewinds, outdoor shower, many birds. Amazing sunsets

Beautiful Home on The Beach

This was the most wonderful, peaceful, relaxing vacation ever! The home was clean, very nicely decorated and no need to really drive anywhere. Beach outside the gate with snorkeling, turtles and no crowdsā€¦actually no people at allšŸ˜Š. Sunsets were absolutely amazing. Highly recommend this home!

This was our first stay on the Big Island, but won't be our last. After a week at a resort, we moved to Cindy's wonderful property for a second, even more relaxing week. Everything was great. The perfect base from which to easily get to a variety of fantastic beaches and explore the Kohala coast.

Hidden gem by the sea

We had such an amazing stay at this beautiful cottage by the sea! How lucky we are to have found this place. Inside and outside the property, everything was pristine. How lush and peaceful the property grounds. The view of the stars at night in the garden facing the ocean,..a perfect stay in paradise. I highly recommend to everybody looking for some quiet time and a slice of heaven. Our host was so friendly and pleasant, willing to accommodate our inquiries/ requests here and there. Thank you for a memorable and wonderful time! We will keep this place in mind for future visits to the big island.

Sunsets and sea turtles

Gorgeous location. Quiet. Private. Directly on the water. Visited every evening by three sea turtles a few hours before sunset. General Store just down the street with incredible sandwiches for your daily adventures. Only big criticism, claiming AC is stretching the truth. There is a tiny unit in one bedroom. And it can only cool that one bedroom. It was quite hot and humid during our stay and that wasnā€™t pleasant.

Wonderful stay

My wife and I stayed at this home in July to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. This cute home is steps away from the ocean and loaded with everything you need for a quiet getaway. The location is spectacular and close to everything you need - restaurants, beaches, groceries, activities, ect. Turtles are right out front. Wild turkey's came to visit. The furniture indoors and out is in great shape as are the appliances. The bed was very comfortable. The A/C was fully functional. We only used it for a few hours during the hottest part of the day because the sea breezes kept the house comfortable most of the day. We can't wait to come back again!

Best Hawaiian Memories

Our stay at Puako was one of the most memorable experiences we have had on any of our more than 20 visits to the Hawaiian islands. Wandering the tide pools on the beach in front of the house, snorkeling some of the most special water we have seen right out in front of the place. Watching turtles come out of the water for a little sun. Watching whales and dolphins playing right off the beach. Hearing the whales while snorkeling. Simply relaxing and enjoying the beach was absolutely wonderful. There were occasions during our 9 day stay when the waves were coming in a little too high to allow for a reasonably safe entry, in front of the place, but just down the road a little way, near the Church, was a wonderfully protected place to enter the water. The wifi was sufficient such that I was able to conduct a little business from the lanai. The view from each of the rooms great, the only knock I have was that I had to spend about an hour cleaning the windows to fully take advantage of the great views.

This beautiful cottage exceeded our expectations

This wonderful cottage exceeded our expectations. It was such a treasure that we stayed "home" to enjoy the relaxation and beauty as opposed to sightseeing other parts of the island. Every night the sunsets were spectacular. Snorkeling with the turtles just off the reef in front of the house was incredible. Swimming at 69 Beach was always perfect and protected even when the wind was high elsewhere. Being able to walk down to the Puako General Store for supplies and partake of some of their locally made "take and bake" meals was a delightful surprise. (When we wanted to go out for dinner, there were plenty of choices in the hotel/shopping complexes just a few minutes away. )The outdoor shower was a wonderfully refreshing treat in the evenings after a day in the salt water. The beds were extremely comfortable and the simple country elegance of the home made it a delight to experience. I really cannot say enough about the joy of staying in this VRBO. Thank you, Cindy, for putting this all together and sharing it.

Great Beach House

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying at Hale Alaula from July 2 to July 9. This is a wonderful home right on the water. We couldn't have been more pleased with this updated, clean and well-equipped home, the setting, and the yard. There are sliding glass doors along the back of the house so that you have an ocean view from each room. The home has all the conveniences and it is nicely furnished and very comfortable. There is comfy patio furniture too and a table and chairs outside. TV, wifi, washer and dryer are all up to date and easy to use. The neighborhood of Puako is lovely and quiet. There is a market with all the essentials and more just a short walk down the street. You can wake up in the morning, grab your snorkel gear, walk a couple houses down along the beach and enter the water safely. In fact the snorkel boats came by almost everyday and anchor nearby because the snorkeling is so good along Puako! We saw lots of turtles who like to come in near the shore to sleep in the sun. The home is surrounded by a spacious yard that is well maintained. Everyday, a pair of wild turkeys and their offspring would wander through the yard. We were there over the 4th of July and could see the fireworks from the beach in front of the house, that seemed to be not far from Kawaihae which was nearby to the north of the property. My husband thinks Hale Alaula is the ideal location for visitors that has the best weather and many, many opportunities for adventure. Great places to visit by car are Hapuna State Beach, Kailua, Weimea and the Parker Ranch headquarters, Green Sand Beach and there's much more on the big Island. But, staying home and watching the sunset from the patio is fantastic. We loved coming back after a day of activity to the peace and comfort of this lovely home. We've recommended this home to our adult children and we would definitely come back.

Amazing place with great location

We are a scuba-diving family and love to dive right off the shore. This lovely beach house suits us perfectly. It has a great layout, is well-furnished and comfortable. We love exploring the reef, counting the turtles and watching the sunsets on the beach. The owner is very easy to contact and quickly responds. Definitely a slice of paradise!

My Favorite Stretch of My Favorite Island

Perfect place for us

Great location right on the water (Puako Reef) with a little sandy beach and a hammock plus large yard and lanai for outdoor living. House was very comfortable and well appointed. Looking at other nearby comparable properties, we thought this one was a very good value. We hope to return someday.

I've owned this cottage for 8 years. I have been traveling to Hawaii since 1965 and I became very attached to the Big Island of Hawaii. I grew up by the ocean and because I'm comfortable by the water it's a place I would like to spend a lot of time in the future. In the meantime, I live in Denver, Colorado and have a boy, 22 who is a senior in college and a daughter, 25 who is a Nasa engineer at JPL in Los Angeles, California.

In the evening you can watch the sunsets and every sunset is different and unique. Sometimes the whole sky lights up with oranges, lavenders, yellows and purples especially after a rain. The ocean is constantly changing as the storms move in and out. Sometimes it's so rough you will want to stay away and sometimes it's so smooth it will remind you of a lake and you will want to jump in and swim with the turtles.
