We had a fantastic holiday here, the pool area is perfect for a quiet and restful holiday. Even when it's hot the breeze in the evening cools the house down for a comfortable nights sleep. We highly recommend this for a complete get away!

Thank you for taking the time to do a review. Thank you also for leaving the cottage an easy clean. Much appreciated. It has been unusually hot from time to time - but the breeze holds up as ever to cool us down nicely. Very glad you enjoyed the pool and the new covered seating area. It is proving popular, especially in the late evening it seems ! I must update the photos... Welcome any time ...

Wonderful

Wonderful location where we could relax and enjoy the private pool and views, whilst still being only 15 minutes from shops and restaurants and less than an hour’s drive from the coastlines. We really enjoyed our 10 days here and Vicky and Manuel were wonderful hosts.

Thank you for taking the time to review the cottage. I am so glad you loved my gentle old dog.... Manuel He is a star! Even taking people on walks if they want to so they don't get lost... He is also good with children and visitors dogs, which is a bonus. Recalling my time of long hours and stress, it is good to hear that you got the much needed peace and relaxation. Your work schedule is intense so a do nothing time must be appealing. Hope I got the balance right - twice daily pool checks and being around if required whilst not intruding on your much needed privacy.. Thank you for leaving the place so clean much appreciated. Welcome any time

Peaceful retreat

Quiet and remote stay with a good pool. Lovely countryside with lots of storks! Not many restaurants or attractions nearby but a great place to switch off and unwind with plenty of empty tracks/unpaved roads to walk on.

Thank you for reviewing the cottage and for leaving it an easy clean - much appreciated. So glad that you got your escape into peace as you said. We all need it from time to time. For sure if visitors need a lot to do other than bird watching, fishing, nature and historic sites then the Algarve would be the choice. There are actually a lot of historic things in the area but not well publicised. Villages around with quaint places and usually good views from high points. Settlements going back to pre historic times. I'm sorry if I didn't give you enough restaurant information as there are many! The town square in Ourique is lined with them. As with those on the ICI they are all maybe 20 minutes drive away but that's the exchange for total tranquility in the countryside I guess. Pleased you enjoyed the one in Ourique that you went to. Good food. Great to hear of places in the UK familiar to me. Stay safe and well -lovely to meet you.

Look at the views and listen to birds - no city noise. That is the aim. So many busy people come here to get away from everything !! Although if needed beaches etc are about 45 minutes away. Restaurants etc 15/ 20 minutes. Thank you also for leaving the cottage an easy clean. Much appreciated by us all.

A winter escape

Apart from the diffculty in finding the place (poor roads and pouring rain) we discovered a true haven of peace and beauty. A lovely cottage, well equipped and very comfortable in every respect. We would certainly like to return one day.

Thank you for your kind review. Good to hear that you were comfortable in the cottage and enjoyed the peace and beauty of the place. The exchange for tranquility is being off made roads for the last part of the journey. That said we will put up a clearly visible sign at the turn off to help locate the cottage. It was a pity about the rain but badly needed in the winter after severe drought. The bonus is that our lake is back! Thankfully it didn't rain the entire time you were there so you did get to see the landscape. Welcome any time and thank you for reporting the small breakage! Very considerate.

Thank you so much for taking time to write a review - really glad you enjoyed your break from the world! Thank. you also for leaving the cottage easy to clean it is so much appreciated. It is meant to be a private retreat to totally relax. We try to ensure a good internet recognising that if people need to check in on work (ouch!) it can be stressful if the internet is not good. There are plenty of restaurants locally and it is easy to drive to the West coast or Algarve if any guests want the sea or a more noisy day! Take care of yourselves you are welcome any time to chill !

We found Casa Sossegada to be a brilliant place to stay. Exceptionally clean and with good facilities. The location was even better than it appears as advertised, delightfully rural and with a great mix of created garden and natural scrub. A perfect place to relax if you wish to get away from it all. It was great for nature and even though we visited in October, there were still plenty of birds around the grounds and the lake in particular. The approach road was fine if driven sensibly. Vicki was an excellent host, contactable if needed, very helpful and quite charismatic. We are looking to revisit.

Wow that's a great photo from the highest point around but still on the land. In spring all that sun scorched grass is carpet of blue, white, red and yellow wild flowers and green grass. it is quite stunning and lasts until the sun becomes hot. It is hard to describe the place or take enough photos as there are so many different areas ... the pool with plants around overlooking the forest is quite different from the wider garden. Many hectares to explore. Often people keen on birdwatching stay and if family don't share the interest they can walk the tracks, go round the lake or laze by the pool ! Thanks for taking the time to do a review...

Relaxed and recharged

We had a wonderful stay at Vicky’s property. It is set in the beautiful Portuguese countryside and is exceptionally private. It was great to relax by the pool and listen to all the birds sing in the morning! Vicky was very hospitable, but gave us a lot of privacy! We enjoyed her fresh lemons and oranges every day we were there! Delicious!

Wonderfully peaceful escape with everything you need for a relaxing break. Mike's house is a charming place with a good sized pool and absolute quiet for those who want to get a way from it all. If it's a special piece of paradise you're looking for away from all the hustle and bustle of everyday life then this is the place for you. The owners make sure you have privacy as well as being on hand should you need anything. If you are looking for bright lights and entertainment then perhaps this is not for you but any nature lover will fall in love with this very special place. We spent two weeks here in July / August with our kids (7 and 6). It is al totally amazing, secluded cottage in the middle of nature. The house is clean and well maintained and has everything you need to relax and enjoy yourself, a well equipped kitchen, a choice of seating outside (follow the sun or the shade) and beautiful grounds to wander in. We loved the pool, we swam for hours and spent the evenings enjoying the breeze on the terrace, listening to frogs and watching shooting stars. Communication with Vicky, the host was brilliant, she was so kind and helpful, as was Joaquim who takes care of the property. Ourique is an easy going, locals town with good food at Lobo, as well as a very good supermarket. We loved the laid back wild west coast beaches at Malhao and Vila Nova de Milfontes, about an hour's drive away. We're pretty sure we'll be back!

We try to accommodate everyone's needs. There if you want anything but vanishing if not so you get total privacy. The night skies are wonderful and the birds, frogs, sounds of the natural countryside alway give pleasure. Yet you can get to supermarket garage pharmacy etc in about 15 minutes max. Plenty of restaurants also. The west coast beaches are lovely.. there are also some pretty towns to visit - we can provide information if anyone wants it. Peaceful getaway, with great facilities

We had a lovely time at this property. The cottage was clean, spacious and well maintained with all the facilities we needed, and felt very homely. The grounds and pool are exceptional and this was a highlight of our stay in Portugal. The pool was large, clean, with good depth and views over the gardens and valley, to woods beyond. Plenty of space and sun-beds around it to relax. The property is secluded and peaceful, a great place to unwind, I’ve not been anywhere so quiet - no traffic noise! It’s still in easy reach of the local town for supplies and close to some beautiful places to visit. The coast is an easy 1hr+ drive, fine for a day trip. Our host Vicky was warm, welcoming and very helpful. We’d have no hesitation recommending this property and would love to return.

Another fantastic visit

Our third stay here as a family of four (an 11 year old and a 7 year old). We just love this villa and its idyllic location. It is in a perfect location where you can sit back and relax amongst the best nature has to offer. We love the house and of course the private pool which offered endless fun for our two young boys. Shops are close and the Algarve is only an hour or so away. We spent two days at the water park, a day at the beach and the rest relaxing and soaking up the location. Vicky the owner can not do enough for you and is only next door if you need anything. She is from England herself and such a nice lady, very easy to get on with. Simply wonderful! We will be back.

Peace perfect Peace

What a fabulous country retreat Casa Sossegada is. Probably not everyone's cup of tea, but just what we wanted. Peace and quiet, with just the birds and Manuel (owner's dog) for company. Vicky, the owner was very hospitable. There if needed, but not at all intrusive. Her directions from Ourique to the cottage were spot-on and easy to follow. The cottage was exceptionally clean on arrival and the bedding smelt wonderful. The pool and gardens were well kept and a relaxing place to spend time. Plenty of sitting areas, in shade or the sun. Big thank you to Vicky for a wonderful relaxing week and best wishes for the future.

Thank you first of all for leaving the cottage so clean. Much appreciated. Good to hear that peace and quiet except for the birds ! was just right for you. It is a place of tranquility to re charge the batteries although we do get families with children playing in the pool all day and having BBQ.. Then the parents watch sunsets in peace after the children go to bed. It is a place for total relaxation not for bars and night life though there is a DJ who comes every year and creates his own music scene for friends round the pool!! Beautiful remote property full of wildlife

We spent 3 nights and it was amazing. The flowers were in bloom everywhere, the cottage was cozy and quaint, and while too cold temperature wise to use the pool it was open and available if we wanted to go in.The directions from Vicky were straightforward and easy to follow. The road in has some potholes but totally fine for any sized car and typical of any rural road. You're only 15-20 minutes from Ourique which has grocery stores, shops, and many different restaurants. The views on the property are stunning every way you look. If you get the chance to talk with Vicky, do it. She's lived an incredible life and was wonderful to talk with. If you like being in a rural remote area rather than a hotel this place is for you. We would definitely go back again and highly recommend you stay here.

Thank you so much for your very kind words. You were a joy to meet and kept the cottage so clean which we always appreciate. Spring here is stunning. An unspoiled area of the world yet close enough to necessary shops. The roads are owned by the municipal authority not by us so we cannot mend them After four years of severe drought, torrential rain for many days destroyed the repairs done last year. As you said it's just a need to be careful and drive very slowly for the last 3 km or so. Hope you enjoy the rest of your tour. Stay safe and have a great time.

Comfortable cottage in a quiet location

We found the cottage homely and very well equipped. I note previous reviewers suggest the photographs do not do it justice and I would agree. It's in a quiet, attractive location but only 10 minutes drive from Ourique with its facilities. The cottage is set in substantial grounds which includes a lake, which are great for walks, views especially from the trig. point, and for seeing a wide variety of birds including but not limited to zitting cisticola, red-necked nightjar, hoopoe, various warblers and close views of golden oriole which provided the 'alarm call' each morning and visited the bushes next to the pool each day. Vicky, the owner, is very friendly and attentive, and provided us with tips for local walks and places to visit. We enjoyed a relaxing stay and would recommend a say at Casa Sossegada.

Most of the guests are very good with this but you were exceptional ! Hard to tell anyone had been there... thank you so much as it really helps to keep up the standards. Very sorry to have missed saying goodbye with your early start. It was lovely to meet you. Being vegetarian it is not easy in local restaurants. except for pizza and egg things So as I love vegetarian food and cook it a lot I will make sure you get something by way of a change. A piece of paradise

What an amazing find it was, Victorias place is simply beautiful, the cottage, the pool, the grounds, the whole 11 days of our stay was just so lovely we truly didn’t want to leave. We had all the privacy we wanted, Vicki said unless you need me you won’t see me and she did exactly that, We got on so well with her we went out for dinner, she’s such an amazingly interested lady, we had planned to go and explore more of Portugal but we ended up going out once as we just loved the place so much you don’t want to leave, We will 100% come back and stay again, The area it’s situated in is just so peaceful, so many amazing views, we walked around the grounds up to the trig point which is definitely a must, the view up there is beautiful, you can see all the way to sera d espinnaco d cao and sera de monchique. The cottage is exactly how it’s described too, clean, homely and exactly how it looks in the photos, Thankyou again Vickie we loved our stay and meeting you as well Joy & Roger

Perfect Idle

On arrival at the property we were overwhelmed with the silence, just birdsong with no other properties in sight. Having let ourselves in we realised that the photos and description did not do this place justice. After a few short minutes Keith arrived to show us around both inside and outside. Vicky & Keith live next door but their house is not visible from the cottage. We found them to be very approachable to ask about the area, places to go, places to eat etc, etc. Whilst always being present they respected your privacy. Sadly, we only stayed 1 week and after that time we did not want to leave, a good reason to return for a longer period to experience this wonderful property, it's facilities and the wildlife which is abundant, especially for birds.

Thank you for those kind words about the cottage! We really must get some better photographs to show off its comforts and views. We try to be around to help if asked ( or to be invisible if that is what's required). Happy to advise where different birds and other wildlife can be seen. Hopefully too we can direct anyone to good places to eat and interesting towns nearby to visit - or the coast . Thank you for adding to our list with the restaurant you visited - card on the board in the cottage. Great pleasure to meet you both - welcome anytime.

We want to live there!

This is a very special place, which feels a a bit like Shangri La. You probably won't understand how truly special it is until you get home. The cottage is lovely, with everything that we needed, and is set in what could be your own private nature reserve or park. The sun rises over the lake in front of the cottage and sets on the hills behind the secluded swimming pool. You can watch both from different sitting areas, in the company of nesting swallows or the resident geckos and lizards. If you want to get back to the simple life Casa Sossagado is just about perfect. Although Mike and Vicky live on site their house is out of sight of the cottage. They are the best hosts you could ask for, ably supported by their dogs and cats who sometimes stop by on their own to make sure that you're OK. We love the area and enjoy exploring the local towns and seaside resorts, which haven't been spoilt by the excesses of the tourist trade. We've been lucky enough to visit for three years running and will certainly be returning again.
