I am so sorry about the bugs you encountered. What you saw are not the typical German "cockroaches" that infest a home because of uncleanliness. They are much larger bugs that are in the roach family which we refer to as "Water Bugs" here. We call them that because rain water and high humidity causes them to be on the move looking for a dry place. We had several rain events and lots of humidity in the days prior to your arrival, both of which will drive them indoors where it is dry. They are fast and sneaky and can slip in the sliding door or front door without being noticed. Unfortunately it is a part of coastal life that we have no control over. The entire complex has regular pest control treatments so if any bugs do happen to enter the condo they will certainly die quickly. You apparently encountered them soon after their entry before the pesticide had time to disable and kill them. There is nothing that will keep them from around the outside areas because the solution used by the pest control company gets washed away by the rain. I'm truly sorry that they were so active while you were here!
