This cottage features a comfortable king-size bed, a fully equipped kitchen, and a private deck where you can relax and enjoy the sunshine and ocean views. As part of our five-cottage property, you'll enjoy a serene setting just steps from the beach, while still being only minutes away from the downtown area of Hanalei.

Beautiful cottage and grounds. The interior of the cottage was right out of a designer magazine. So cleanly done. Global knives that were sharp, allclad pans, Smeg coffeemaker and small appliances. Nice gas stove. No AC but the jalousie windows and fans were completely adequate for ventilation. The cottages are close together. Except for young people in number 2 being noisy one evening, the property was very quiet. Super close to the beach. Adequate parking. Highly recommended!

Simply beautiful

It was so easy to check in and unwind. We were a little early, so took a blanket down to the beach just steps away and watched the waves. The cottage was peaceful and had everything we needed.

Great place. Very clean, nice quiet location. These cottages are a lot closer together than I was expecting, but no one else was staying in the others so it didn’t bother us. Only reason I’m leaving a 3 star and not a 5 is because there was absolutely 0 communication from the owner. We ran out of toilet paper and paper towels since we were there for a week and sent multiple messages on VRBO and text and never got a response.

Thank you for your review. I am the property manager, and sincerely apologize for the error during your stay where I mistakenly responded to another guest instead of you​. As soon as the other guest informed me of my mistake, I reached out to you to apologize directly​ through the VRBO platform. In doing so, I saw your additional message requesting a late checkout and approved that request. ​Since I did not hear back, I assumed you were able to enjoy the additional time ​a​t Hale Makai. We also reached out regarding your unpaid cleaning fee, but again did not hear back from you, so we covered the fee and paid the cleaning company on your behalf. Please know that we want all our guests to feel valued and attended to, and I deeply regret any impression otherwise. This was an honest human error on my part.​ We hope you had a lovely time at Hale Makai and fully enjoyed the island of Kauai.

The location of this property is hands down amazing! Hardest part is just trips to the store (~20 mins), with a bit of planning NO BIG deal! Walk to the beach, snorkeling, hands down amazing!!

North Shore Kauai Heaven

The cottages are quaint and perfect for 2-4 depending on 1 or 2 bedrooms. The cottages are large enough for a quiet get-a-way. The location is perfect for beach walking and snorkeling. Some of the clearest waters on calm days. The new owners are going to renovate and we are looking forward to some comfort changes. One of our favorite places to stay in our retirement. This is our second time at the Hale Makai Cottages and we love the vibe and beach.

Hawaii Perfection: A Truly Special Cottage Stay

My partner and I recently enjoyed a wonderful 3-day stay at this cottage for our first trip to Hawaii. Our stay truly exceeded all expectations, and the listing photos simply don't do this place justice. We woke up every day to watch the sunrise on the private beach, a truly unforgettable experience.You'll fall asleep and wake up to the soothing sound of crashing waves, with a gentle breeze flowing through the curtains.We filled our days visiting the local coffee shop, taking long walks along the extensive beach, and even indulging in beach massages at the neighboring resort.The cottage itself is incredibly well-equipped, showcasing the owner's thoughtful and detail-oriented design. It's stocked with high-end products, from Sabré Paris utensils and a Polaroid camera with film (which we loved using!) to a record player complete with a Rufus du Sol record.The location is fantastic – just a quick drive into Hanalei, yet directly next to a state park and botanical gardens.While we spent the second half of our trip on the south shore, we definitely preferred this part of the island. Our only regret is not staying longer!

Paradise on Earth

I knew it was going to be beautiful... never expected SO MUCH! They call Kawaii the Garden Island; I would call it the Magic Island, reinforced by the cottage location and its wonderful vibes. The Cottages are away from the most touristy areas and yet close to everything I love. They have the privacy and peacefulness I needed, they are right by the ocean to swim, snorkel and go for as long walks by the beach that you wish and close to one of the most amazing hikes I´ve ever done. We had the most beautiful 6 days, every day sunny - which they told me was rare. Being right by the ocean, we went to the beach every day - and night!! Perfect spot for star gazing! I drew in the energy of the ocean and the wind, walked for short and long hours, opened to a whole unexpected universe while snorkeling just by the shore, indulged in the peacefulness of floating held by the ocean... The cottages are AMAZING: impeccably clean, with all the comfort and equipment you need, very comfortable beds, decorated with an amazing taste, great shower, wonderful decks, great hammocks and garden. Reading on those hammocks under the shade of the palm trees was a treat. I was warmed by the care of the owner who while we were there cared for an endangered monk seal on the beach by surrounding it with CAUTION ribbons so no one would bother it until it decided to go back to the ocean after its rest. And so he did :-). The hike to the Falls and by the ocean was a lifetime and most beautiful hike. The cottages are near famous beaches, gardens and small picturesque towns with great dining. But I preferred the tranquility of our own beach by far!!! I couldn´t recommend this place more nor better. It was a treat to my body and soul. Thank you to everyone that made this place possible and what it is!!! I will be back!!! :-)

Amazing!

Aloha! Ok— so I don’t want to share this review because I don’t want to share this place and keep it all to myself. However, the right thing to do is to be honest and let you know this is the perfect location for a true getaway on the best side of the island. We loved it and will definitely be coming back. The team managing the property is friendly and responsive. We grilled out while we were there and had fresh fish from the Dolphin which is a fantastic fish market right down the road. LOVED this place!

Honeymoon Stay

My wife and I stayed in cottage #1 for our honeymoon. We had a wonderful stay and definitely recommend this place. Pros: 30-second walk to a very private beach, hammock right out front, spacious, huge tub, parking spot, nice porch and outside table for meals, grassy yard, secluded but the neighboring cottages provide a sense of safety and community The less-than-perfects: the space heats up quickly -- especially with no AC -- there is a ceiling fan in the bedroom and dining area, and a box fan provided, leaving the windows open helps as well, but the heat inside is not ideal

A perfect honeymoon!

We loved staying here on the beach for our December honeymoon. The cabin was a great size and had lots of extras, including snorkel gear and beach shoes. The host was great with accommodating us access to do laundry. There's 5 cabins on the property, but you don't hear much from the other families -- the sound of the waves is what you hear most.

Secluded and relaxing

A terrific property on the North Shore. It's about a 15 minute drive from Hanalei and in a pretty secluded area. Walk right down to the beach, which is also a nice snorkeling spot. Next door is a small hotel/resort with a restaurant. There are a few other cottages on the property, and you'll be seeing the other guests and depending on which, you'll walk through their back yards to get to the beach. Cottage was nicely done, with a full kitchen (fridge/coffee maker/dishwasher/etc.).

For our future guests: To clarify, there are 5 cottages on the property and are landscaped to offer privacy. To get to the beach there is a path at the edge of the property line, but it does not belong to any one cottage. The yards are communal areas open to all guests. The path is in front of Cottages #3 and #2 and there are several feet of lawn space between the cottages and the path to the beach.

Relaxing Kauai

The place had everything we needed to kick back and relax. Clean, right on the beach, some snorkeling equipment. It was perfect.

Beachfront getaway

Great spot to relax and enjoy the beach and lovely property. The cottage was nicely decorated, clean and well stocked. Loved the location, very quiet and private and convenient for exploring the hiking trails in the area.
