One of Maui’s most popular strips of white, sandy perfection, Kaanapali Beach was Hawaii’s first planned resort area. Once the home of powerful native Hawaiian chiefs and warriors, Kaanapali Beach vacation rentals now welcome the warriors of summer, who enjoy surfing, sunbathing, and excellent snorkeling off the coast. Travelers looking for fun further inland can peruse the upscale shops, take in a bit of the region’s whaling history, and stroll the manicured golf courses. As the sun sets, visitors are treated to a daily, traditional cliff dive off Black Rock, a tribute to Maui's last independent king.
You might be surprised that this beachcomber haven was once a bustling whaling town, but the proof is on display at the Whalers Village Museum, right in the Whalers Village shopping district. Kids and adults will be fascinated by the museum's collection of intricately carved whale teeth (scrimshaw) and by exhibits on the life of a 19th-century whaleman. For a peak further back into history, head toward the town’s Black Rock cliffs at sunset. Every evening, a diver lights torches along the cliff, then plunges into the water, reenacting a feat by Maui’s 18th-century King Kahekili.
Kaanapali Beach is a glorious spot for families and friends, swimmers and surfers, with its bright blue waves lapping pristine white sand. Water sports and sunbathing aren't the only reasons to find a Kaanapali Beach vacation rental as close as possible to these 3 miles of coastline. Right on the beach is Whalers Village commercial center, where shoppers take advantage of posh boutiques and fine restaurants. Kaanapali Beach also has two championship golf courses with beautiful views. Be warned – you may be distracted from an important putt by the sight of a whale breaching just offshore.
Snorkeling is a favorite pastime in Kaanapali Beach, especially in the water around the cliffs of Black Rock. Butterfly, damsel, and parrot fish love hiding out amongst the lava rock, and you can spot your fair share of turtles and crustaceans, too. Kaanapali Beach’s Whalers Village provides an excellent view of the ʻAuʻau Channel, one of the most protected areas of ocean in the Hawaiian Islands. ʻAuʻau translates to “take a bath,” a reference to the water’s calm, bath-like conditions, and it’s the perfect hangout for humpback whales.
