  • Nice Modern Condo

"This is a very nice, updated, modern condo in a great location right on the ocean with a "to die for" view from the lanai. The building has covered parking and a pool, although the pool and surrounding deck will be closed for renovation sometime next year (2018). The owners live a mile away, but only for 6 months of the year. They live on the mainland and/or are traveling the rest of the time, but reachable by cell phone/email. A caretaker is used when the owners are off the island, and she was very helpful during our stay. We appreciated the direct booking with the owner which saved us some money. However, there are a few negatives. Be prepared for a long list of rules, including doing some laundry before you leave. We paid a cleaning fee which should include all laundry. We had to launder the beach towels, and it was requested, but not mandated, that we wash the sheets. A limited amount of the basics are supplied initially, but if you run out of things like toilet paper, paper towels, body wash, etc., you will need to replace them. We couldn't even find an extra garbage bag in the condo. Due to allergies to scented laundry detergent, we requested that laundry detergent free of dyes and perfumes be used to wash the sheets and towels before we arrived. The owners accommodated our request, but because there was a caretaker at the time of our stay, we were charged for both the new laundry detergent and her time. It seemed a little petty. Even though we got to keep the detergent (but had no intention or way of bringing home to the mainland), the owner could have kept it and used for future guests. We made the same request of the owners of the place we stayed at in Hilo, and they cheerfully accommodated our request without a charge. The place in Hilo uses a caretaker all year long, as the owners are never in residence. Overall, we were happy with the condo and its quiet location close to many of the sights we explored."

  • What a great vacation

"My family had a fantastic Hawaiian vacation and having a nice, clean, quiet, comfortable place to call home while we were there helped a lot. We have two boys aged 9 and 11 who already want to go back. I was amazed by all the amenities. You can tell that guests have been buying items for their vacation and just leaving them. Pretty much everything you could need was there. The kitchen was fully stocked with plates, utensils, pots, pans, toaster, microwave; basically everything you would need. There were even some basic food items and luckily nobody seems to have left expired items (or they were properly disposed of by the cleaners). The lanai was a beautiful place to eat our meals (when we didn't go out to eat) and as somebody mentioned before, it was very quiet. We barely saw or heard anybody the whole time we were there. The 3 bathrooms came in very handy when it was time to get ready in the morning as well as when it was time to clean up in the evening after a full day at the beach!! There were plenty of towels and everything else you could need (and much more). Note: don't pack a hair dryer because they have one. Speaking of the beach, there was everything you need for that as well. There were boogie boards, beach chairs, umbrellas, beach towels, snorkels, and even some sunburn cream (which I had to use). Unfortunately we did have a slightly bad experience with the umbrellas. There were something like 4 umbrellas there and we picked a couple that looked like good ones for our first day at the beach. But when we got to the beach and tried to put the first one up we found that it was broken so we couldn't use it. So we tried the other one (don't know why we brought 2) and it was also broken. However, before going to the beach the next time we opened all the umbrellas in the condo and found a good one. I spoke to Blake about it and he said he would get a new umbrella. Also, one of the boogie boards was falling apart and then after some use completely fell apart. Again, Blake said it would be replaced. Which speaks to the great service. The location of the condo is also great. You can walk down to Ali'i drive where all the shops are and eat at one of the restaurants. The pancakes at Lava Java are fantastic. We had a wonderful vacation and we would definitely stay here again. Highly recommended. And thank you to Blake for the great service."

  • Wonderful!

"If you like watching dolphins, turtles, and colorful tropical fish, not to mention surfers and every type of boat from Polynesian canoe to cruise ship from your balcony , this condo is the place. Sunsets indeed are spectacular and why don't you enjoy them while sipping a drink made up in the blender because yes the condo has that as well as a coffee grinder so you can grind your own beans in the morning. It was definitely the most thoroughly appointed condo I've ever stayed in in my half century of experience. Plenty of great restaurants as well as grocery stores close by. Liane was amazingly responsive to our every need! I can't thank her enough for sharing this gem of a place to stay in Kona."

  • A heavenly retreat

"As a former resident of Kailua-Kona, I periodically return to visit friends and just plug back in to the Kona vibe. So, I am thrilled to say that I have found my new retreat for those visits! Kona Makai, most especially Building 1, is as perfect as it gets...breathtaking views from the lanai of the gorgeous tropical grounds, the blue Pacific Ocean with a daily dolphin show, and the magnificent Hualalai. It restores my soul every time I'm here, and I'm so at peace that I actually forget there is a world outside of this place. The minute I walked into the condo, I felt welcomed and at home. Jon and Suzanne have thought of practically everything to make your stay feel homey, from a comfy and cozy bed to a superbly well-stocked and tidy kitchen. The Good Lord willing, I will definitely return next year!"
