  • Golden Cottage by the Sea

"We had the pleasure of staying here for several days in July 2016! The house is comfortable and cozy. It had all of the amenities one could desire, as well as amazing views out over the ocean! It is in a beautiful spot, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay!"

  • Comfortable house, great location.

"This was our first time at The Harpoon and may not be our last. We have been in some newer and higher-end houses on Plum Island and after a week this summer The Harpoon ranks high on our list. There is nothing fancy about the house -- just good character -- and that is just fine. Compared to other homes this one is prepared for vacation renters. It is not crowded with personal items, nor are most closets and cupboards off-limits, both of which can make you feel like you are intruding in someone's home. The main floor is open. Comfortable living room, good kitchen and eating area, good-sized bath. A plus is a separate room -- call it a reading room -- which is a nice feature if you want to have a place to sit quietly and look at a book or to play games, which we did. The downstairs (ground level) is partially finished and fully adequate as a third sleeping area (with bath and laundry). The upstairs (second floor) consists of two bedrooms and plenty of room and closets. The only thing I would note about the upstairs is the flooring, which is also is the ceiling for the first floor. Without carpeting and the usual air separation between floor and ceiling squeaks and other sounds travel easily between the floors. If that is a downside (a minor one) there also is a big upside about the house: the big deck. There is plenty of room to relax and recreate with the kids. Plenty of comfortable chairs and a nice outdoor dining table set that easily accommodated eight. Umbrellas were there for our use but we didn't feel the need to use them. And if the deck is nice, the location is even better. From that deck we can see water to the west (tidal area) and north (the Merrimack as it nears the ocean). The walk to the beach on the estuary takes less than a minute. If we wanted to walk to the ocean side it would have taken 5 minutes. To the playground even less. And with the Plum Island Lighthouse immediately on the south side of the property, we had an element of privacy as well as nice sight. Last, the very pleasant owner of the home was responsive to our questions and attentive to details at the house. We thank her for our week at The Harpoon and hope to return."

  • Great choice when in Salem!

"From the beginning Mary was responsive and insightful as we planned our trip. The house was beautiful and spacious and equipped with everything we needed. It was a 15-20 minute walk to the train station and various Salem attractions. Gulu Gulu Cafe is a must go. The only disadvantage was not having a washer and dryer on site. Overall, great stay and would stay here again!"

  • Clean, comfortable family vacation home close to Good Harbor Beach

"We were 4 adults and 2 young children who live about an hour from Gloucester. The house worked very well for us. It was clean and spacious. You can see the ocean from the upstairs bedroom. There is a small back yard with an outdoor shower, table for 6, lawn chairs and an outdoor grill. We often left the back door open and the children moved freely between outside and in. The outdoor shower was a tremendous feature after trips to the beach. It was great to get the sand off everyone. We went to the beach everyday - sometimes twice a day. The beach is a ten minute walk. We carried a lot of gear to the beach so we would usually take the car to drop people and gear off. Also, there were a number of beach toys and boogie boards in the backyard that we used. There is plenty of room to park cars at the house. The kitchen and kitchen tools were adequate. We mostly cooked and ate at home. There are 2 large supermarkets within a mile of the house, so keeping the house provisioned was simple. The owner recommended a couple of local restaurants, "Causeway" and the "Lobster Pool" which we enjoyed. I would recommend this house to families with children who like the beach. The Cape Ann area is beautiful and there is a lot to explore. However, we spent most of our time enjoying Good Harbor Beach."
