  • Fantastic - Large - Swimming Area - Boat Dock - Has It All

"We chose the Stone House due to the positive reviews and the large size of the house. It really is huge. It has 7 queen beds and 7 twin beds in logical combinations spread among the 8 bedrooms. One of the bedrooms is the "Crow's Nest" which is large enough for 4-5 people to sleep comfortably. All of the bedrooms are fairly good sized. It also has 3-1/2 baths, full sized kitchen with dishwasher, dining room to seat 12, screened porch facing the water, and much more. It's a 100 year old house so there are some sticky doors, some creaks in the floor, and some windows that don't always cooperate - but our first impression when we got there was "WOW!" Better than we had expected. The setting is serene - right on Scammon Cove which is larger than most inland lakes - and opens up onto Lake Huron. There is a huge boat dock big enough for ANY sized boat. We docked a 24' Sea Ray. Water at the dock is about 3' deep. The firepit was a favorite hangout at night. The owner provides tons of firewood but you can find plenty of driftwood near the water. At night you can easily see the Milky Way and more stars than you can normally see near any city. On one night we were able to see Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, 5 shooting stars, the International Space Station and several orbiting satellites - it's a sky that you just don't see very often. We did see some bear tracks near the firepit a couple of mornings - but never spotted any bear. There are lots of deer and other small wildlife. In the evening you can hear the mournful cry of the Loon, a duck-like diving bird that has a very interesting call. The lone moose of the island hasn't been seen in a couple of years. On the north side of the island are some fossil ledges. We spent a day hanging out there. The drive to the ledges is primarily for 4x4's but we got our minivan and Camry almost all the way there - only had to walk about 1/2 mile. You can rent ATV's on the island if you want to go that route. The IGA supermarket is very good. We found almost everything we wanted/needed. It's the only supermarket on the island and they take that responsibility seriously. They even bake their own bread and muffins. Prices are higher than average due to the remoteness of the island. There is a very good Do-It Best hardware store on the island. As a former builder I can attest to the quality/quantity of their selection. We highly recommend the Stone House!"

  • This property was by far our favorite in our five years of going to the Upper Pennisula.!

"We have visited the Upper Pennisula on our family vacation for five years and this was by far the hands down favorite with all our age groups and activity levels. The youngest loved it for the abundant turtles, fish and frog catching opportunities , the teen loved the boating , fishing and campfires , the adults enjoyed the remote quiet peaceful surroundings and comfortable cabin amenities. This place provides an out in the woods experience, complete with a beaver and beaver dam, with the comforts of home. Great vacation - helpful and very nice caretaker that stopped to check on us and give us the lowdown on area fishing. I would definitely recommend this for family of all ages. The mattresses were just right for a wonderful night sleep. Home was very well maintaned with great grill , carpet made for a place that kids run in and out of , a splinter free deck to relax on and watch the grandchildren and teenagers play off of the dock and swimming pier, and large fire pit to sit around and make smores and hobo pies."

  • Top Shelf Home and Homeowner

"I was a guest of a guest in this home, my brother-in-law rented it and we were along for the ride. On arrival, I was amazed at the place, it was perfect in every way. Clean, nicely appointed, fully stocked, more rooms than anyone could use and plenty of things to do if you are indoors due to weather. Ping pong, pool table, Foosball, games, books, everything you need to cook, a sauna, decks galore. It is a home and feels like one the minute you get there you are relaxing and can feel the comfort. We also had the privilege of meeting the owner who we invited to share some wine with us. What a delight she is. We are homeowners who rent property ourselves so we know about traveler trepidation. We have also rented in many places where the photos do not live up to the property on arrival. Not so here, this place is better than the photos. If we ever return to this area, this is the place we plan to stay."

  • Comfortable stay

"We stayed here for a family ski trip. We stayed in the main/upper level with a large group. The stay was great! The bedrooms were large and the beds comfortable. The house was updated and kitchen was really nice. There was plenty of seating with an island and table. The house was clean and well maintained. The owner was great to deal with as well as the caretaker. We called her to ask for some dishwasher soap and she brought it right away that night. The only thing that kept me awake was the bedroom doors were squeaky and the downstairs renters had 3 dogs. Other than that, I could not hear my family snoring in the other room. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others."
