  • Great unexpected stay

"We never actually planned to come here but heavy rain at the beginning of our stay meant we could not access the LTM house and we were offered this as a replacement house. whilst not as aesthetically beautiful the house became an excellent base for exploring big bend national park.We enjoyed breakfast and sunrise on the veranda enjoying making waffles with the machine provided, we also enjoyed a sunset BBQ. The birds, deer and jack rabbits provided plenty of entertainment and we had the bonus of enjoying some of team GB success at the Olympics as we had the TV. this was a very comfortable and enjoyable place to stay and although we left to try out the LTM ranch when the weather improved we could easily have remained here. in a way we ended up with the perfect mix of the two houses. a wonderful stay in Terlingua and many thanks to Janet & family for advising us to adapt our plans and checking that we were having a great stay at both properties."

  • A retreat to recharge!

"You want solitude and peace and quiet? This is absolutely the place! This was my 2nd visit to the Retreat and I will be back for more, for sure. The location is wonderful and the views morning and night are spectacular. The cabin is well-appointed with dishes and cooking utensils. Hit the Cottonwood store (if coming from Big Bend Nat'l Park) and you can stock up on groceries for the full-size fridge and freezer. We grilled hamburgers and enjoyed the open porch watching the sunset. You are off the grid, but there is Wi-Fi. It is just a wonderful oasis in the desert. Thank you for opening up this lovely escape for others to enjoy!"

  • Basic but all you need

"We had all we needed, maybe a few more bugs than necessary but we lived with them. First trip to Big Bend Park area and hope to return soon. Watched a family of sheep on bluff above upper deck; 8 hour float trip through Santa Elena canyon WOW!! Big Bend River Tours 1-800-545-4240 James and Andy were great, they know the river, the plants and the wildlife. Hwy 170 Lajitas to Presidio was more beautiful on return(west to east). Had a wonderful lunch at a small dive The Bean in Presidio. All restaurants were small, casual and the food was good. I will make every effort to book Terlingua House for future visits. Lots of linens, beds were comfortable, kitchen was rustic but every thing necessary was there. FYI we never located a hairdryer"

  • Great modern space!

"We loved our three days in Marfa at this bright, modern, airy house, easy to find, and the owner made it super simple to get in once we arrived. We came to see the Perseids meteor shower and the backyard was a great vantage point the first night. Unfortunately we got rain after that, but the screened porch was the perfect place to watch the storms come and go, eat meals, or just gaze at the lovely xeriscaped backyard. Clean, thoughtfully appointed, fun artwork perfectly scaled to the space, nice crisp linens, three options for sleeping - soft, medium, and firm. The ladder to the loft took a *little* getting used to---could be an issue for older travelers or anyone with an injury or other limitation. Rain showerhead wasn't the strongest water pressure, and does splash a bit so be aware of that before you step in. It's 25 mins to the Prada store, well situated for excursions to Ft. Davis, the McDonald Observatory, and Balmorhea. Right next door to a pho restaurant (Marpho, get it?), a two minute walk from a Mexican food restaurant. Close to El Cheapo liquor but their inventory is NOT cheapo, so I'd recommend bring your own if you want wine, beer or cocktails. Other things to note - if you're sharing space with people you don't know well, there's not a ton of privacy, but for two people or a family of four, was just right, especially as what you give up in having a bunch of rooms with doors, you gain back with the light and high ceilings, clerestory windows letting in plenty of sun. It is on Marfa's main street, so there's night traffic with 18-wheelers, and you can hear the train, but that is pretty much the case from Marathon to Valentine and beyond. Thanks so much; we hope to be back!"
