  • Truly Amazing Place

"We stayed at the Fish House built by Karla and Dave with such attention to detail that you wouldn't believe. If you thought of it, it was there. Kayaks, bikes, fishing poles, mini golf course, beautiful property, amazingly beautiful pool along with goggles, tubes, floats, life jackets and paddles for the kayaks, etc. etc. etc. We went with our teenage kids and 2 dogs and Karla and Dave left us dog toys to use and treats and bowls and everything! There were even mirrors in both showers. The place was super clean and inviting and you couldn't help but relax. Dave took us all out on his boat which is docked in its own house on their pier where you can hang out or crab or take a kayak into the bay. Simply fantastic! We had hoped our dogs would have been a bit more social and got to play with Karla and Dave's dogs but that was not to be, but that didn't matter to either Karla or Dave. They just wanted us to enjoy and have fun and we did. We were able to make day trips to Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens and of course check out Matthews County. It was SUPER HOT for a couple of days, but it was air conditioned in the Fish house and we hung out and played games and watched movies and tried to get a zero on Shut the Box (super addictive game). Honestly, we cannot say enough about this place and our fabulous hosts. My daughter said it was the first time she could recall me actually just sitting and watching TV with her and not worrying about anything else. We hope to return. Just awesome."

  • Perfect for a long weekend getaway!

"My husband and I stayed at The Blue House the first weekend in August. We absolutely loved it. The town of Irvington offered us the laid back feel we were looking for. We enjoyed walking around the town and visiting the shops and restaurants. We also explored the nearby towns of Kilmarnock and White Stone and even took a drive over to Williamsburg. The house was just the right size for the two of us and we enjoyed sitting out at night on the porch and relaxing with a glass of wine! Definitely would spend another weekend in Irvington and stay at The Blue House!"

  • PERFECT HOUSE FOR SIX KIDS UNDER THE AGE OF 7 (YIKES!) AND SEVEN ADULTS!

"My first review, written two years ago after our first visit to Pop Castle, spoke of the history of the house and the beauty of the grounds, as well as the consideration of the owners, the Ramadans, who have provided a fully stocked kitchen, a huge video library, shelves of board games, and a library stocked with books for kids and adults, and a TV and DVD/VCR machine. Two years later and the review still stands as true and "glowing" as ever....though now I want to include the information about the outdoor toys i.e. a complete croquet set, children's basketball net and an adult regulation size basketball net, a double kayak, a couple of adult bikes, lots of chairs for outdoor sitting and beach chairs to take down to the sandy beach. A propane gas grill in excellent condition is provided just off the kitchen door. A rope swing with a wooden seat hanging from the high branches of one of the massive oak trees is popular with all age groups! The house is an historic house on the National Register. Old homes can often have "issues" with wiring and plumbing, insulation and comforts that a newer home may not have. I appreciate that this lovely old home has beautiful bathrooms with all tubs, toilets, and showers working well....that the kitchen is clean and has efficient and well working dishwasher, garbage disposal, 2 refrigerators, and lots of counter space. The washer and dryer are large capacity and work well....the house has multiple and comfortable areas for family gatherings for conversation and games or for private escape to read quietly or work on your computer which picks up wi-fi from anywhere in the house. The Ramadans are to be commended for their commitment to the ongoing maintenance of this large and old house while not interfering with the beauty of the old floors, stairs, banister and the original windows and woodwork throughout. My FAVORITE part of Pop Castle, however, are the magnificent grounds with numerous giant, old magnolia trees and large, centuries old oak trees, the honeysuckle, flowering privet, and a sweeping, lush green lawn that invites one and all to go barefoot. In early June the magnolia trees bloom and the entire yard smells faintly of the subtle lemony fragrance of the magnolia flower. If you are thinking about this VRBO, I hope you will do it.....time spent at Pop Castle is a rare opportunity and creates lasting, lovely memories."
