Mississippi River cottage located minutes from La Crosse, Wisconsin, in Dakota, Minnesota. RESERVE NOW FOR FALL COLOR SEASON. Weekly rates are a value now and very attractive from November through March.
This classic 1920's cottage is located in a small, peaceful river town. The cottage overlooks the main channel of the Mississippi and is on a quiet road that winds for miles along unobstructed, panoramic views of the river. Setting is private and peaceful yet close to other activities. Being on the main channel (we are not on a slough or backwater) gives you a perfect vantage point to watch historic riverboats. Stroll or take short drive to fall color trails and drives.
Surrounded by flowers, trees and outdoor living areas, the cottage is cozy and light with panoramic view of river which is a short walk out the front door. A large gourmet kitchen and dining area open to a brick grilling area and outdoor dining. There are two bedrooms, one with a queen bed and the second with a double and single bed. Daybeds/comfortable couches in the living area accommodate one or two more if needed--works well if children are along. Living room and sunroom overlook the river. Excellent, comfortable furnishings throughout.
The house is at the edge of Dakota and secluded from residential neighbors. There are no houses between the cottage and the river. A stroll across the road takes you to the confluence of the Dakota and the Mississippi Rivers where there is a quiet boat landing and excellent fishing. Two miles down the road is a larger public boat landing and a white sandy beach. It is worth a stay just to watch the sky, light, water, eagles and tundra swans. You are also on the Great River Roadway, one of America's Scenic Byways. This is the perfect place for gathering friends and family in all seasons.
Nearby are many activities: boating, fishing, canoeing, swimming, hiking, biking both Minnesota and Wisconsin trails, shopping, antiquing and many more... Great dining in the area, in both La Crosse and in the scenic rivertowns along the Great River Roadway. Daytrips to truly fine restaurants are recommended as part of your plans. The cottage is excellent for birdwatching; an eagle family living in the Dakota Eagle Tree right outside the sunroom window entertains, especially from September through spring.
Area attractions: Riverfest - La Crosse's 4th of July celebration (five days worth). Rotary Lights - 1.6 million lights in historic river park, Thanksgiving through New Years. Oktoberfest - famous La Crosse celebration for a week in September/October. American Queen-this majestic steamboat visits La Crosse sixteen times in 2008. Stay and watch her pass by.
