This magnificent 5 acre permaculture organic exotic orchard retreat sits back on 650' cliff above Waipio Valley, and looks to the ocean Southeast, North and Northwest up the undeveloped rugged coastline. Sometimes there are a multitude of waterfalls seen cascading down 1400' cliffs into the sea. Gaze at lush greenery, frequent rainbows, especially during the wet season (Winter/Spring). Epic views face 23 miles of these 1400' cliffs, backed up by undeveloped jungle. Whales jumping and breaching can be seen from the property during the winter/spring. Maui is visible on clear days. The area boasts a perfect climate of just enough rain to keep the streams going and the flowers blooming, cool trades off the ocean, and a daytime year-round temperature of between 80 and 88 degrees, with cooler nights.
The property is fully landscaped with a vast variety of exotic trees, ferns, orchids, palms, flowering shrubs and exotic fruits to pick. We are in the early stages of growing Vanilla, Cocoa, a bubble gum, durian, wampi, Acai berry, dragon fruit, black sapote (Chocolate pudding tree), Cashew and Macadamia nut trees. Try our fully mature hamakua coast coffee, mangoes, mangosteens, avocados, pomelo, Jackfruit, mangos, papaya, passion fruit, soursop, breadfruit, rambutan, lychee nuts, starfruit, Brazillian cherries, jaboticaba, cherymoya, mountain apples, true cinnamon, cloves, Miracle berries, a variety of citrus, bananas and much more grown on the property.
Walk along the cliff's edge/ocean path or explore the path through bamboo. Both short easy walks take you to an opening on the picturesque lawn going down to the cliff's edge. Take another short steep path (for sturdy feet only) past the Banyan tree and passion fruit vines into the gulch on our property.
Listen to the peaceful sounds of the Waiulili Stream and waterfall running through the property. Black Sand beach seen from the property. Ocean and waterfall views abound. Enjoy the peace and privacy of your own suite complete with private outdoor soaking tubs to relax in and enjoy the stars.
Staying at Hale Kukui is an ecoadventure and an end destination in itself! It is also a great jump off point for other destinations! This epic property is unique for its historically important location, for its short paths, private nooks, exotic organic orchard, unmatched views and size/character of property.

If you are able to pull yourself away to see other parts of the island, Hale Kukui is a great stepping stone to the whole island. Walk or drive 1.5 miles to the black sand beach down a 25% grade road or 1/2 mile to Waipio lookout. Walk 1/4 mile to get island made ice cream and Kukuihaele's art store. Its an easy 10 minute drive to the farmer's market in Honoka'a where there are several quaint shops, restaurants and basic groceries. Try local ride the rim, surfing, biking, ride the rim, helicopter tours of Waipio Valley, horseback, hiking, camping and enjoy the longest black sand beach in Hawaii below the property.
Drive to Hawaiian cowboy country in Waimea and you will smell eukalyptus on your way to the cooler climate in there in Waimea (Kamuela). Here there is more shopping, fast food chains, a bigger hospital and some of the best fine food in the islands (only 30 minutes away). Go to Merriman's for the best seafood and Kailua pork quesadillas.
Drive on to the white sand beaches about 20 minutes from Waimea, the 5 star hotels and high end shopping of the southwest coast.
Otherwise drive east along the lush Hamakua coast, see Akaka falls, the world famous botanical gardens, Hilo, Volcanoes National park, Natural hot springs in Pahoa. Take the saddle road between Hilo and Waimea and drive to the 14,000 top of Mauna Kea along the way (many countries have their space observatories there). Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the world from the sea floor.
Visit Kona and see if you think the preferred coffee of the white house is really as good as the lesser locally known rich tasting Hamakua coast coffee. Hale Kukui grows small amounts of its own and while we don't dry and roast it, you are welcome to try.
Hilo has a great outdoor market, shopping, surfing, etc. and it is a beautiful 1 hour drive along the Hamakua coast. Another hour or so beyond is the must see Volcanoes National Park and swim in the hot springs in Pahoa. Kona is about 1.5 hours away along very nice highways as are most places.
The whole island has so much to offer but you will definitely want to relax at Hale Kukui for its incredible views and natural private surroundings. Each unit or cottage has its own kitchen ready to cook and private bathroom. You may not want to leave.

- Hale Kukui, in the village of Kukuihaele, is a great stepping stone and a majestic destination itself on the Hamakua coast. Walk or drive 1/2 mile to the Waipio lookout. Travel another mile down the side of a mountain/cliff on a narrow roadway to the longest Black sand beach in Hawaii. Enjoy remote camping or hiking in Waipio valley and the valleys beyond. Embark on horseback riding, surfing, hiking, camping and much more locally from our village, Kukuihaele. Hale Kukui is a short easy walk to Kukuihaele's general store with island made ice cream and a place to meet for getaways into Waipio Valley. A 10 minute drive to Honoka'a offers a weekly farmers market and a few great places to dine. Check out this quaint village's shops. Here is a small hospital/clinic as well. Great shopping and some of the best restaurants in all of Hawaii are in the old Hawaiian cowboy town of Waimea (Kamuela) about 25 minutes away. Here is a community hospital as well. Hilo also is a beautiful 50-60 minute drive along the Hamakua coast and has all of the amenities you might want. White sand beaches, 5 star hotels with high-end outlet shopping, botanical gardens and Akaka falls are all within an hour drive. Kona with great scuba, snorkeling, shopping and of course its coffee is about a 90 minute drive. Volcanoes National park and natural hotsprings are about 2 hours away. Also not far out of Waimea, you can drive to the top of the world's tallest mountain from the sea floor, Mauna Kea (14,000+ ft above sea level). Play or ski in snow at the top in the winter months. **If our deluxe cottage calendar appears booked, then check into our studio cottage #499551and our 2 bedroom cottage's #499549availability. A peaceful, magical paradise
A peaceful, magical paradise
My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights - a return visit from last year. Paula greeted us with a bottle of champagne and a bowl of tropical fruit from the garden; pineapple, avocado, star fruit, lilikoi, grapefruit, tangerines and guava. Paula and Dan are wonderful hosts - they were there if we needed them, yet gave us the privacy to feel like we were the only ones there. This property is spectacular! One night, we soaked in the tub on the deck while watching the milky way and shooting stars overhead, and a lightning storm over Maui. All we could hear were crickets and coqui frogs. Last year we stayed in the Studio, this year we stayed in the Cottage. Both are very comfortable with gorgeous views. The property is close enough to Honoka'a for shopping and dinner (check out Il Mondo's), and Waipi'o valley for a hike, but remote enough to relax. We will definitely be going back because it feels like home.

Gorgeous, relaxing stay!
Gorgeous, relaxing stay!
What a treat it was to spend a few days at the orchard cottage! I loved sitting in the bath on the lanai, gazing out over the ocean, or looking at the stars. The views of Waipio valley are the BEST! It's just a wonderful, tranquil, breezy, pleasant place, and the caretakers are welcoming and available for any needs. I appreciated the clean, comfortable furniture, bed and mattress. I recommend going to Waimea for meals, as several of the best restaurants on the island can be found in that charming town. In nearby Honokaa, check out JJ's country store for a huge selection of grass-fed beef at amazing prices.

Spectacular view, agreeable property management
Spectacular view, agreeable property management
Would highly recommend this property. Directions were clear and it was easy to find. Quiet and serene. The view from the deck is a postcard view, even better than the photo. Property manangers, Paula and Dan, were very warm and welcoming. Gave us fresh fruit and eggs from the trees and chickens on the property. The studio unit was clean and spacious enough for two adults, maybe three if you share the bed (queen bed plus futon) The hot tub on the deck did not have working jets and had debris from a tree overhead, but we didn't end up using it so was not a problem for us. I would call ahead if you want a jetted hot tub and check status. Plenty of clean towels and bedding. The kitchen was stocked with basic implements and condiments, but we needed to buy aluminum foil and a scrubber pad, they probably would have given them to us, had we asked. Probably good to call and find out exactly what is there before you arrive. Microwave and double hot plate for cooking were sufficient for the two nights we were there. There was a coffee maker and sugar/coffee whitener but didn't use it. There are not many restaurants close by and the ones that are there close fairly early, so you will probably be eating some meals in. The grocery store in Honaka'a is adequate for short stays. I would definitely stay there again and would recommend it highly to anyone who is not looking for luxurious accomodations. If it is a clear night, be sure to look up at the stars. The stars visible on the Big Island are amazing!

Most exotic paradise ever seen by world traveler! Black sand beach, Ocean cliff, waterfalls, fruit
Most exotic paradise ever seen by world traveler! Black sand beach, Ocean cliff, waterfalls, fruit
This was the most beautiful paradise we have ever seen-testament by world travelers! Perched up safely on a 750 foot cliff, we saw whales jumping, the black sand beach, ocean cliffs, waterfalls and the island of Maui to the Northwest-a lot can be seen even without leaving the cottage. There was more ocean to the southeast and north. It was a pleasure live in the exotic orchard and to meander over the 4.5 acre grounds/orchard and pick your own fruit too. Making your own fresh squeezed juice in the morning was great. The kitchen was more than ample to save money on our meals. One traveler said they saw eleven waterfalls from their deck (lanai) just before we arrived when the dryer whether reduced the waterfalls to just the one that flows over the property. What a pleasure to gaze accross miles of open ocean and across the famous Waipio valley and west to the sunset between Maui and the northwest shores of the Big Island. The main house is always occupied by the caretakers who are eager to help with your needs such as island info, etc. The website and VRBO greatly understate the beauty here!

About the owner: Hello. My name is Andy and I have a nine year old daughter named Hana named for Hana Maui. We love our paradise in nature and feel surrounded by serenity, beauty and an energy that is powerful and unique to our property. I have always had a passion for the exotic fruits and for gardening so this organic orchard on the ocean was the perfect find in 2009. I love adding new and more interesting specimen Palms, fruit trees and flowers to the nearly 5 acre retreat. My latest interests are Dragon fruit, Hamakua coast coffee, Cocoa and Vanilla bean growing among other orchids, fruits, nuts and spices like true cinnamon and cloves! I am also interested in the medicinal benefits of various botanicals and I have a background in science. I work also as an osteopathic Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine physician but I am most at home in nature. I am a world traveler and have never seen such beauty as I do here compared to Switzerland, Fiji, CA, New Zealand, Bali, Europe or Australia. I also love where I am from in New England where I grew up in Maine.
Why the Owner Chose Waipio:
I have traveled the world and haven't seen any property that matches the tranquil solitude and beauty seen here. It is nicely located to explore the best attractions on the island, but you might not want to leave the 5 acre botanical paradise over-looking the sea.I would prefer the charm of Hale Kukui to any BNB or 5 star hotel that I have ever stayed at in the past years of travel home and abroad.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
You will feel at home, but more relaxed than ever, not just as a guest but as an integral part of Hale Kukui's natural earthy beauty with ocean, cliff and waterfall views that are second to none. Caretakers Paula and Dan are eager to help with any questions or special needs during your stay - they live in a separate house on site to be at your service if needed. Kitchens are fully equipt in case you never want to leave as many people find themselves feeling very early into their stay. You will feel in awe of your natural surroundings, wake to seeing the ocean and have so much to explore. You will learn about Hawaiian permaculture organic orchard with fascinating and delicious exotic botanicals. You will not want to leave and you will definitely come back!
