On arriving at this delightful cottage, one discovers a charming third generation family home built in typical New England style. Steeped in 100-year family history. Nestled privately on its own beachfront in Ryder’s Cove looking out on magnificent Penobscot Bay with majestic Cape Rosier in the distance. Not a typical rental home, it is made available for a handful of weeks each summer to single families only. Beautifully updated and maintained. Filled with family heirlooms and memorabilia, it radiates a feeling of home away from home. From panoramic windows and sliding glass doors in the living room looking out to the beach and magnificent water views of the bay, to the spansive deck outside with its large sun awning above, to a wood stove inside for cozy warmth on a cool evening, to the quaint bedrooms upstairs and downstairs, and the conveniences of home, this cottage captures the full essence of a relaxing, rejuvenating getaway vacation. It radiates a feeling of coziness, hominess, relaxation and inner peace.
On the first waking morning, one may hear the solitary call of a Maine Loon or the throbbing of a boat’s engine as local lobstermen amble through their fields of pots to check their morning’s catch just off-shore. Peering lazily outside one beholds magnificent Penobscot Bay views bathed in the glow of an early morning sunrise with its golden hues splashed along the island shores. In time these hues will surrender willingly to the bright warming sun. The early morning landscape can be mirror-like and serene with occasional zephyrs of wind sweeping aimlessly across the waters. Soon the clear blue sea will come to life and glisten with the emerging of a new sun-filled day with all its activity.
Enjoying a hearty breakfast on the deck, one contemplates the day’s many choices. Strolling along the beachfront where, under parents’ watchful eyes, the kids can spend endless hours swimming at high tide and exploring the tidal pools when tides are low. Collecting sea shells. Kayaking. Fishing. Sailing under brisk summer breezes. Bicycling. Walking. Hiking. Jogging. Tennis. Golfing. Horse back riding. Visiting the island’s many Arts and Crafts fairs and exhibits around. Reading a good book. Or just snoozing to the lull of the waves gently lapping ashore. Maybe heading to the mainland for a tour on an historical tall ship from Camden Harbor, or visiting the local artists’ galleries and shopping for souvenirs. A light lunch at a harbor waterfront restaurant. Or a drive to Rockland, Belfast or Castine. Each seaside town with its unique history, charm and appeal. Penobscot Bay stores a wealth of treasure among its many islands, hidden harbors and tucked-away fishing towns along its shores. Delicious Maine lobster caught fresh from the local waters, or tasty crabmeat and clams all abound. The area is abundant in natural beauty, history and bounty.
Brilliant sunsets reach across the open sky as the days slip into nightfall. It’s time for a sizzling barbeque on the deck, on the beach, or a simple meal inside. A hot sunny day may turn to a cool evening where the wood stove will radiate a warm coziness inside. One can look out over the bay at night where a full moon can cast a shimmering ribbon of light across the waters to the beach ashore. The days can pass all too quickly. But this kinship with nature and its beauty will prevail. Invigorating. Refreshing. With a renewed appreciation of life’s true values.
