Why the Owner Chose Kohala Estates
We chose this area because it is quiet, expansive and directly above one of the best areas for seeing humpback whales during the winter months. As well, we have a great view down island.
The Unique Benefits at this Studio
The studio was built in order for guests (and family) to have maximum privacy during their stay with a separate entrance and outdoor area. Located on a beautiful dry ravine with owls and bird life--the studio is a special place. To date, we have had guests from around the globe. .
The house is located close to beaches, sites of interest, spas and world class golf courses. Nearby towns such as Hawi and Waimea provide good variety in shopping and cultural experiences.
Our favorite places are Hapuna Beach,Waipio Valley, the summits of Mauna Kea and Volcano National Park and many more beautiful sites to see on Hawai'i Island. We also enjoy shopping in Waimea and Hawi and take advantage of the spas and beaches at the resorts just south of us.
There are many great places to eat in our area including Cafe Pesto, the Seafood Restaurant, the Bamboo Inn in Hawi and many of our guests like to go dancing five minutes away at the Blue Dragon.
Just at the bottom of the hill is one of the largest macadamia nut processing plants on the island with a visitors' center that shows how macadamias are processed and a shop where every type of chocolate covered macadamia nut imaginable can be found. The entire area is awesome--not too crowded and has the best of many worlds to explore when visiting Hawai'i.

This beautiful vacation rental is owned by the Griffiths family. Family members work in the museum, tourism, accommodation and technology sectors both on Hawaii Island and Vancouver Island. We travel back and forth and some of us work remotely from this special getaway.
We sometimes refer to ourselves as "island specialists" because we enjoy island life so much. Our family has resided on both Hawaii Island and Vancouver Island for over twenty years. Family members have also lived on Midway and Honshu islands for extended periods of time. We enjoy the natural diversity and beauty of the islands.
Our goal is to provide a simple, tasteful, affordable place for people to enjoy and explore Hawaii--or to be able to work remotely from one of the most beautiful spots on earth.

This was a well-appointed property and the owner was very helpful and considerate. We enjoyed our time here--especially liked the quiet surroundings instead the resort scene for a change. We had never really explored the north coast, but found it to be lovely. We couldn't have asked for better accommodations. Very private and restful.

5 stars views, unit needs attention

We rented this unit for the views, the peace and quiet, the large lanai, the "get-away-from-the crowds" feeling, and on that, it delivered. The space is large for a studio, with a big bathroom, a walk-in closet and ocean views from the bed, which is very comfortable and with nice bedding. But we were disappointed with the condition of the unit. The convection oven, coffee maker, 2 burner electric cook top are all put away in a cupboard and under the kitchen sink, and you have to haul them out every time you want to use them, which is not mentioned in the listing. The only place to put them down is either the tiny counter between the sink and the fridge (which explains the grime on the side of the fridge), or a small cart in the bedroom. The barbeque is in really poor condition and we didn't feel it was safe to use. The chaise lounges where we intended to spend a lot of time relaxing and reading were very good quality, but dirty. Granted, they are outdoors all the time, and there are birds, geckos, cats and red dirt around. The white carpet under the bed was badly stained, and this became even more evident under electric lighting at night. The shower floor was also dingy. The "lawn" mentioned in the listing is non existent, and landscaping is minimal. This is the dry side of the island, so we understand water usage is an issue. We think that the inside of this unit was probably nice when it first opened, but that it has not been maintained as well as it should. We decided to leave after one night. The owner refunded us half of our week's rental fee even though we asked for nothing, so thank you Deborah for that. I am trying to be fair to the owner, but had we been aware of the conditions, we would not have rented here. If you are looking for peace and quiet and nice ocean views, you will find them here, at a very reasonable cost.
Owner response:Thank you very much for the very thorough critique. Your thoughts and our changes to the studio, to our guest rental agreement and description have improved things enormously for us and for guests. This was a first for us.I didn't have a chance to speak with this guest who was accommodated in arriving early, and staying late into the next day and refunded without request. We're very proud of the Kohala Vacation Studio and keep it clean and well maintained for our guests who are important to us. I would be pleased to answer any questions potential guests might have about this review.

This was a delightfully quiet, compact residence. The view was beautiful at sunset. The night time stars made me wish I'd boned up on my astronomy. With only a little bit of improvement and a few minor repairs it will be a lovely vacation rental for people who enjoy the breezes up on the hillside. The landscaping is still immature and the driveway was a bit rough. The owner was very gracious and responsive. A big plus was how close it is to a really good resturant.
Owner response:Thank you for your valuable input. Waterline in driveway was being repaired for our guests'convenience. For other guest's info--landscaping is in a ranchland/semi-desert environment. Thanks again.

We spent 2 weeks on The Big Island on our first vacation as a family with our 5 month old son. This location was the last one of our trip and we stayed at this lovely studio for 5 nights. The studio has everything you need: big and comfortable bed, large outdoor space, great location (view of ocean and mountains, I don't think I've ever seen so many stars at night!), BBQ, etc. The location is really great, close to all the beaches and with much better weather than in Waimea (it was raining there every time we went to do groceries). Thanks a lot!
Owner response:Mahalo for staying at the studio. We're glad you enjoyed it so much--and with your little one. Aloha and come back and visit us again!

Our perch on the hill gave us all the peace and sunsets we needed to refresh ourselves. Local beach access and restaurant/dance bar nearby. Visited glamorous hotels for nightlife; drove up the coast for snorkeling, dolphins, & other tourist treats. Then "home" to our retreat to toast the stars with a glass of wine on the lanai. Memories for a lifetime!

We had a wonderful stay. We loved the location , close to the best beaches, and out of the vog. So it was sunny and clear every day. The place had everything needed and I love the very comfortable king size bed and the amazing view. It was very private and safe feeling. It was close to two amazing restaurants, surf shops, and a real treat to find The Blue Dragon, an open air beautiful night club with live music, dancing, good food, and amazing exotic drinks. We would definitely come back.

I'd never been to the Big Island before, let alone Hawaii (Lorna had - relatives who lived in Kona)). First - I'd go back in a heartbeat. I especially love the dry heat of the northwest coast (Kohala); and overall eveyhwere was pretty easy to get to. The roads wer great (maybe that's because many seemed newly paved and they looked like new running shoes). Second, this vacation rental was wonderful. Out of the way enough to give us the feeling of privacy and close enough to get to shopping and beach and around the island when we felt. Waking every morning to look out over the ocean and to listen to the birds through the day - just what we needed. The place had everything we needed - and the bed was VERY comfortable. Third, Danby was a great ressource (though we were there to look for things for ourselves)- where to go, where to eat, what to see. To distil it down.... an amazing daily view; such easy access to everywhere; very comfortable. Try it!
