Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2000
The house was offered to us by the original owners, as we were regular renters. After the passing of my mom in 2002, the decision was made to pack my dad up and move with him to his beloved island and away from New York winters. We love that we can make our home a special get away for others, as it was originally for us.

How Do We Love Thee-Let Us Count the Ways!

Our experience of St. John revolves around our stay at Casa Contant. The house is situated at the top of Contant Hill overlooking Pillsbury Sound, St. Thomas and other smaller islands. Trees and lovely gardens surround the house shielding it from other properties and giving a feeling of total privacy. Cruz Bay is conveniently close. If you love to walk, as we do, you can be downtown in minutes. Granted, there is the hill to climb coming back home to Contant, but there are lovely sights all along the way and who says you have to rush? We are 60-ish and love staying somewhere where getting in a vehicle is only an occasional occurrence (eg: when carrying groceries). St. John is a wonderful island to explore. We love the hikes to remote areas, the swimming at the end of each trail in some quiet bay[Great book at the house describes trails]. Casa Contant is the place we love coming home to at the end of a day of exploring. After the walk up the hill, we rinse off in the outside shower, walk through the cool interior out to the deck, jump in the private little pool and gaze out across Pillsbury Sound. Casa Contant is cool without air conditioning- one of the favorite aspects of the house for us. There is an air conditioner in the bedroom which we have never used. Who would want to miss all the wonderful fresh breezes off the water? It is a house of elegant design built before the term “green” came in to vogue. The island breezes pass through the house from its many windows and doors before exiting through louvers in its high octagonal ceilings. Multiple ceiling fans aid in the cooling effect. Casa Contant, how do we love thee? Let us count the ways: 1. Breakfast on the deck in the cool of the morning 2. Dinner on the deck watching the sunset. Later, watch the brightest moon you’ve ever seen set behind St. Thomas- an amazingly beautiful sight. 3. The pool on the deck (good for starlit dips!). 4. The “garden” bathroom with its full length screen wall at the shower end; beautiful view combined with total privacy! 5. The landlords, John (a.k.a Poppie) and daughter Serena live right downstairs. They are there if you need help or want some tips on places to go or things to do. They are wonderful people but never intrusive. We keep returning to St. John, this precious jewel of an island and to Casa Contant, the lovely house on the hill.

We love Casa Contant and have stayed there numerous times. Many mornings and evenings we have spent on the porch admiring the gorgeous view while cooking out or taking a dip in the pool. The villa is beautifully decorated and very roomy with that Caribbean feel. Love the layout of the villa with a view from every room. The bathroom is unique because there is an indoor "garden" one walks through to get to the shower. The owners make the stay even better by their friendly manner and helpfulness. We will return again and again. There is no place like it. Thank you so much!!! :)

I have stayed in Casa Contant many times over the years - and during many seasons. I have also stayed in many other villas on the island as well.....But this one is my favorite. The view is out of this world and everything you need for your stay in St John is in this villa. It is close to town and close to all the gorgeous beaches on the island. The late afternoons in the pool sipping a drink is the best part of the day, the sunsets are spectacular. Your hosts are on property which makes it very convenient for anything you need or if there is a problem. I would recommend this villa for families with older children, honeymooners and 2 couples traveling together. The price is unbelievable for St John! Please email me if you have any questions about the villa!
