Curacao is the largest island of the Netherlands Antilles in the Caribbean. Since 1634, the island is belonging to the Netherlands and since 2010 it is an independent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The island lies off the coast of Venezuela and has over the years very nice and safe climatological conditions. The average temperature is about 28.5 degrees during the day and at night it is only about 5 to 6 degrees cooler. In the months of July, August and September it can be a couple degrees warmer and from November to February is also time some rain, mostly at night and it never gets really cool. The sea water temperature is about 26 degrees.
Besides beautiful bays in the south where besides swimming and diving/snorkling is possible, you can also enjoy the beautiful sunsets. The island has much more to offer. So you can go deep- sea fishing, sailing, golf on 3 beautiful golf courses. Furthermore there are casinos, good restaurants and well-equipped shops in the capital, Willemstad, where there are also museums.
The capital city, where you can enjoy the many old houses in many colors, the famous '''' Pontjesbridge'', the floating vegetable market, its many restaurants, bars and cafes often right on the sea-side where you can see the incoming and outgoing cruise ships, will surely please you.
Furthermore, one can visit by car, the smaller villages, bays or old plantations on the east and west coast. The north coast is certainly worth a visit, but is pretty rough and not always easy to reach. The highest mountain of Curacao , the ''Christoffel'' in the western part of the island, is 375 meters high. In some lakes and bays, there are flamingos and other special birds. You can also visit a bird park, an Austrich farm and an AloehVera plantation.
Meanwhile, many Dutch pensioners live on the island so that in addition to the mother tongue (Papiamentu) and Dutch, Spanish, English and German and even French is spoken.
Curacao has currently about 135 000 inhabitants and is actually quite modern without having lost their old traditions and architecture
The national coin is the Antillean Guilder (ANG or NAFl), which course is linked to the U.S. dollar.
Besides ANG therefore you can pay in dollars very often. Everywhere in and around the city you will find ATM/Bankautomaten where you can withdraw by credit card or debit card ANG. Also you can pay in a lot of shops, hotels and restaurants with a creditcard
Curacao is now very easy to reach by air. Daily flights with KLM and Arkefly (TUI) directt from Amsterdam and recently AIR Berlin flies from Dusseldorf once or twice a week to Curacao.
To visit Curacao you need no extra vaccinations against tropical diseases (such as malaria). These do not occur. One should, however, protect against mosquitoes which are active, especially at sunset.
