Lancaster townhome description

The owner, a Lititz native and descendant of PA Dutch Mennonites, has lived in East Hampton & NYC and calls this property 'Lititz Haus.' She knows the area well and her “homemade” guide books can point you to a slew of things to see and do. You are a walk away from the Wilbur chocolate factory and beautiful Lititz Springs Park. Come feed the ducks! Use our bicycles to explore Amish countryside, or drive to the “flea markets,” quilt or antique shops. 'Eat yourself full' as the Amish say, at a “smorgasbord.” Stroll through gentle Amish towns like Paradise, Intercourse.

You are a 40-minute drive from the many attractions of the more well-known chocolate town, Hershey PA, including the famous Hershey Park and Hershey Zoo, the Hershey Chocolate Museum, and beautiful Hershey Botanical Gardens.

In the other direction, about 30 minutes out, there are outlets galore, really great 'cheap stuff,' and smorgasbords alike, the Sight & Sound Theater, the historic Strasburg Railroad Museum, the 'Choo Choo Barn' miniature train museum. An old steam train with dining cars can take you through Amish farm country, and occasionally, 'Thomas the Train' stops by. Lancaster County is a mecca for families and kids and Lititz the perfect town from which to explore.... This is not only the owner's biased opinion... Budget Travel magazine recently voted Lititz the 'Coolest small town in America.' Friendly folk, fun and relaxation. My foreign guests have called Lititz and our home a 'true slice of Americana.' Kids are in heaven during the holidays in Lititz... The 4th of July spectacular in Springs Park is like no other--- kids activities like 'panning for gold,' the best firework displays in the region... Clair Bros Global (the owners relatives) supply sound and musical entertainment to the area which you'd never think to find in a small town. The Halloween parade is divine... with tootsie rolls and candy setting kids a-scrambling from the curbs... Some of the Easter egg hunts have been known to involve a helicopter with pouring out millions of treasure-filled eggs out onto a large church field -- or the local Sauders egg company will supply real, hard boiled eggs you can crack and eat... Christmas is as elegant as ever in Lititz, with the most beautiful candlelight services, Moravian stars lit above front porches all about the town... But the owner's favorite has been a Lititz tradition since the 1800s -- to hear the Moravian Trombone choir which starts playing at 2am, walking through the town and ending at the beautiful Moravian church at dawn for an Easter ceremony you'll never forget. And if you’re lucky, you’ll hear the clip-clop sound of long caravans of Amish horse and buggies, smothered in the din of rolling wooden wheels, going down Broad or Main Streets early Easter Sunday morning. In Summertime, the Lititz Springs Pool is a huge facility of 3 large refreshing pools, and the nearby Rec Center has every activity, with an indoor pool for kids that is to die for. Lititz Springs Park has events throughout the Summer -- amazing art shows, craft shows and flea markets gather there ... And if that all just sounds too confusing to choose from, or the weather outside is frightful, perhaps you want to curl up and read a good book !!

                          Year Purchased: 2007

About: My 'maiden' name is Sensenig, a Pennsylvania Dutch name derived from 'Sensenich.' My paternal 'Papa' (pronounced Paw-Paw) was Mennonite. My “Nana” (which is pronounced like Banana without the “Buh’”) was “gay.” You know. It was the 1920s. 'Gay' means 'happy,' right? Papa would explain, 'Nana wore makeup and she got her 'hayer' done, so Nana was 'gay.' Anyway, Papa married “Nana,” trading in Mennonite for Happy I guess. Through the 1940s, Nana raised 7 children ... and I think one of 'em was my Dad …6 aunts and uncles, my brother and 14 or so cousins and a few with babies already, filled up Nana's chattery, little house every Christmas in the 60s and 70s. And so you could imagine what a clan I have down there to visit ....I haven't even gotten to my maternal side...Nana worked in the ticket booth when Lititz had a theater and my maternal 'Pop Pop,' a farmer and watchmaker, had his own watch shop, both on Main St. My Mom saw my cute Dad walking around with his tennis racquet over his shoulder and 'bumped into' him at the Farmers First Bank on the Square, and the rest was history. Nana retired as a seamstress at the age of 87. She seemed to know everyone in town, 'chust abawt,' she said. Nana spoke Pennsylvania Dutch, which is really just an exquisitely 'fernhoodled' butchery of the English and German languages. It's fun to 'hear it spoke,' at the Amish auctions at the “Green Dragon” in Ephrata, (which by the way does NOT rhyme with Frittata) -- or at “Roots” market (which does rhyme with 'toots” - as in Tootsie roll). Oh and you gotta pronounce Lititz as 'LID-itts'... Now, what to say about me ... Well. All I know is, like Nana, 'The hurrieder I go, the behinder I get.'

                          Why Lancaster:
The minute I walked in, I knew this place was perfect. I wanted to be able to visit my family and not pay for a bunch of clunky hotel rooms, or eat in all the restaurants that I waitressed in as a kid ... I first fell in love with the kitchen of course, then the washer/dryer… I mean I actually LIKE to do laundry there. And the ability to pull right into the garage and set your groceries down. That was AWEsome. I mean who knew what a luxury that is?! After living in Manhattan 20 years, I realized how many things I had taken for granted growing up here. My daughter was 3 at the time, and I liked that there were little kids all around the neighborhood, and nice people with nice dogs, and I wouldn’t have to worry if she decided to go out the back door by herself or ride on the front sidewalk on her trikey. Her father being a NYC/Hamptons guy, I was so happy to show my daughter what country life was all about… And as you can see by the “play loft” we added, she adored coming there. The nearby pig farm-- or when fertilizer is put down in early Spring can be a little “too country” sometimes… I actually grew up on the “other side of the tracks” (haha), with the lovely smell of chocolate wafting through the streets. But these homes – like my favorite one was always that of my Aunt Audrey, who lives down the street, are here – And as far as having the choice to walk or bike into the town or out the countryside, that is best done from here. Location! Location! I wanted to furnish it as the cozy quintessentially Lititz-style home I’d always dreamed of as a kid, but also with a bit of Hamptons flare that I have come to know as an adult… I knew this home had the “It Factor,” I needed to do that.
