Secluded House with Dock on Marsh
- Minimum stay:7 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Mace House is a beautiful family home in a quiet, secluded neighborhood where moss hangs from live oaks and deer stroll in the evening. Located on the mainland across the marsh from the south end of the island, this house has a private dock on the frontage along the marsh and is still owned by the family that built it in 1972.
A large screened porch with hammock, swing, and rocking chairs overlooks the tidal marsh where the private dock gives access for crabbing, fishing, kayaking, and watching birds - egrets, herons, and osprey in the marsh and painted buntings and whippoorwills in the woods. Glass doors across the main room let you enjoy the glorious views in the comfort of AC or heat, or you can open them and bring the sea breezes into the house.
Under the house, sinks and showers let you clean up before bringing the catch into the roomy kitchen, and a big fireplace makes the great room cozy for cooler times. A short drive or boat ride, depending on the tide, takes you to the historic Pawley's beach for swimming, surfing, and walking. (Kayaks are available to rent for $75 per week for one, $100 per week for two, and $150 per week for three.)
This is a perfect place for a family to get away from the world and spend time together with our little collection of books and games, or with those you bring yourself. The house is large enough to offer privacy as well.
Nearby are world-class golfing, shopping, historic homes and churches, and restaurants galore. The beautiful sculptures and gardens at Brookgreen are only a few miles north. Fifteen minutes takes you to Georgetown, half an hour to Myrtle Beach, and an hour to Charleston.
Unfortunately, we do not offer long-term rentals--two weeks is the maximum. We also rent by the week only--no short-term rentals. For more details and many more pictures, please see our main website (linked below).

Nice, clean comfortable house. So quiet and peaceful. Plenty of room. Wonderful screen porch with sliding doors that would open for great breezes to blow through the house. Close to beaches and shopping. We had a wonderful time.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

I don't think we could've chosen a more perfect home for our vacation in the Pawley's Island area! It is truly pet friendly with a wonderful yard. We were greeted by the neighborhood canine ambassadors- Mister and Lucky who quickly became part of our family for the week! The location is a nature lovers paradise. We saw wild turkeys, rabbits, deer, and more birds than I can list - everything from a bald eagle to heron & egrets on the marsh. The house is spacious and open, with a huge screened in porch overlooking the marsh - the perfect place to enjoy morning coffee or spend an hour reading in the hammock. Crabbing and fishing from the dock provided hours of fun, as well as delicious meals. Beaches at Pawley's or Litchfield are just a short drive, but even better is the trip by kayak. We also took day trips to Charleston and Bulls Island. There are numerous restaurants to choose from in the area, in addition to many places for carry out, if you prefer. All that we tried were excellent. I would highly recommend this property. You won't find a better location if you enjoy the marsh or more personal and friendly service from the owners! We certainly hope to return in the future. Thank you again for sharing your lovely home!Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

We had the most fantastic week. Our family loved kayaking, bird watching, crabbing, exploring, and just relaxing at Mace House. What a beautiful spot which is visited by egrets and herons every morning. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Mister and Lucky who loved playing with our Basset Hound, Georgia. Only a short distance from home, but a peaceful spot to unwind. We can't wait to come back again.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway.
Owner response: How glad we are that you had such a great welcoming committee! Winter at the marsh is truly magical. We hope you'll come back soon.

Our family enjoyed the Thanksgiving week at Mace House and found it to be as magical a place as the description on line. The view was even more beautiful than the pictures. My teenage daughters loved the kayaks and crabbing off the dock. We enjoyed the porch swing and hammock! We will be back to this lovely, enchanting spot!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway.
Owner response: We're so glad you had a good visit! Fall is a beautiful time to be at Mace House. And glad the crabbing was good, too.

Our stay at Mace house was a total joy! The wonderful house, the beautiful wildlife, the beach right around the corner was all just what we had hoped for in a vacation. We got great seafood at the local Pawleys Island seafood market, taught our son how to play checkers and "go fish", visited Brookgreen Gardens one cool and magical evening, read books in the hammock and never watched the TV. We enjoyed visiting All Saints Church for the Wednesday morning service, and wandered in the beautiful cemetary, rich with the history of the island. The house is lovely, clean and homey, and the location is private and quiet. The best part? Arriving. The worst part? Having to leave! We'll be back...Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

3/9/2010My husband and I recently stayed at Mace House. It is a wonderful vacation home tucked away on a secluded tidal creek on Pawley’s Island. The home is private and very comfortable and thoughtfully furnished by the owners. There is family artwork and lots of books. The furniture was very comfortable. Kitchen was great and fully furnished with everything needed. The large screen porch with lots of chairs, swing and hammock was perfect for bird watching in the back yard and dock. During our all too short week here we visited Brookgreen Gardens – Huntington State Park – Charleston – and Georgetown. All these places were easy day trips from Mace House. The home shows years of wonderful family times here. You will feel it too! Thanks again for renting your lovely home. C&J AllenDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Wow! We have been coming to the beach every year for years. This place, the Mace house, is the BEST we have ever stayed at. We love having our own private place and enjoy the quiet and peaceful setting. We can recharge our lives to go another year after spending the week at the Mace house. Thank you so much for a very memorable vacation and for allowing our 2 four legged family members attending as well. We will see you next year!!Did you find this review helpful? Owner info
Year Purchased: 1972
About the owner: Mace House is owned by Nancy Mace Kreml and Jane Mace Davis. We're both retired teachers: Jane taught math at Irmo High School and Nancy taught English at Midlands Technical College, both in Columbia. Our husbands are retired, too: John Davis edited South Carolina Wildlife magazine, and now paints wonderful wildlife scenes, and Bill Kreml taught Political Science at USC and is now at DePaul. Jane and John also have a house near Brevard, NC, and Bill and Nancy have an apartment in Chicago--but we all live in Columbia with cats, dogs, rats and other tame and not so tame animals!
Why the Owner Chose Pawleys Island:
Our parents, Mary and Parke Mace, built the house in 1972, and our family has enjoyed it ever since. Our parents and grandparents spent summers at Pawley's, and now our children and (future)grandchildren do, too. Pawley's offers beautiful beaches and marshes, fascinating history, great golf courses, excellent fishing and crabbing, and easy access to Georgetown, Murrell's Inlet, and Charleston, as well as the Francis Marion National Forest.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We've always thought that paradise is in the marsh at Pawley's. When we're there, you'll always find us on the dock at sunset, eating supper on the porch, or curled up to read by the fire if the evening is cool. We always like to take a trip to Brookgreen or a nature tour at Hobcaw, eat out or buy fresh-caught seafood and cook it ourselves, play games or watch a movie, and best of all, kayak in the marsh to see egrets, herons, ibis, eagles and other wonderful creatures. And every summer, we swim in the perfect surf on Pawley's beach!
