Location: Pawleys Island, Grand Strand - Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, USA (Near Georgetown, SC; half-hour from Myrtle Beach Airport;)

Accommodations:  House, 4 Bedrooms, 2 Baths (Sleeps 6)

Mace House is a beautiful family home in a quiet, secluded neighborhood where moss hangs from live oaks and deer stroll in the evening. Located on the mainland across the marsh from the south end of the island, this house has a private dock on the frontage along the marsh and is still owned by the family that built it in 1972.

A large screened porch with hammock, swing, and rocking chairs overlooks the tidal marsh where the private dock gives access for crabbing, fishing, kayaking, and watching birds - egrets, herons, and osprey in the marsh and painted buntings and whippoorwills in the woods. Glass doors across the main room let you enjoy the glorious views in the comfort of AC or heat, or you can open them and bring the sea breezes into the house.

Under the house, sinks and showers let you clean up before bringing the catch into the roomy kitchen, and a big fireplace makes the great room cozy for cooler times. A short drive or boat ride, depending on the tide, takes you to the historic Pawley's beach for swimming, surfing, and walking. (Kayaks are available to rent for $75 per week for one, $100 per week for two, and $150 per week for three.)

This is a perfect place for a family to get away from the world and spend time together with our little collection of books and games, or with those you bring yourself. The house is large enough to offer privacy as well.

Nearby are world-class golfing, shopping, historic homes and churches, and restaurants galore. The beautiful sculptures and gardens at Brookgreen are only a few miles north. Fifteen minutes takes you to Georgetown, half an hour to Myrtle Beach, and an hour to Charleston.

Unfortunately, we do not offer long-term rentals--two weeks is the maximum. We also rent by the week only--no short-term rentals. For more details and many more pictures, please see our main website (linked below).

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 1972

Mace House is owned by Nancy Mace Kreml and Jane Mace Davis. We're both retired teachers: Jane taught math at Irmo High School and Nancy taught English at Midlands Technical College, both in Columbia. Our husbands are retired, too: John Davis edited South Carolina Wildlife magazine, and now paints wonderful wildlife scenes, and Bill Kreml taught Political Science at USC and is now at DePaul. Jane and John also have a house near Brevard, NC, and Bill and Nancy have an apartment in Chicago--but we all live in Columbia with cats, dogs, rats and other tame and not so tame animals!

Why the Owner Chose Pawleys Island

Our parents, Mary and Parke Mace, built the house in 1972, and our family has enjoyed it ever since. Our parents and grandparents spent summers at Pawley's, and now our children and (future)grandchildren will, too. Pawley's offers beautiful beaches and marshes, fascinating history, great golfcourses, excellent fishing and crabbing, and easy access to Georgetown, Murrell's Inlet, and Charleston, as well as the Francis Marion National Forest.

The Unique Benefits of this House

We've always thought that paradise is in the marsh at Pawley's. When we're there, you'll always find us on the dock at sunset, eating supper on the porch, or curled up to read by the fire if the evening is cool. We always want to ake a trip to Brookgreen or a nature tour at Hobcaw, eat out or buy fresh-caught seafood and cook it ourselves, play games or watch a movie, and best of all, kayak in the marsh to see egrets, herons, ibis, eagles and other wonderful creatures. And every summer, we swim in the perfect surf on Pawley's beach!

    • We'd like to thank you both for the wonderful weekend we spent at your place. With your help we rode the tides just right and enjoyed paddles from your dock in both directions. We found everything we needed in the kitchen, and the place was very quiet at night. We managed to tuck a lot of activities in, and missed very few of the sights your very helpful guide recommended - even Alice's grave. Thanks, Peter and Marsha Burch

We had a great week at the Mace House. My 2 Granddaughters loved being able to crab off the dock and seeing all of the wildlife. they especially like see the bunny every morning and the turkeys crossing the road with their new chicks. The house was so convenient for us to Georgetown and other areas we like to visit. We look forward to visiting again. Thanks, Frankie Haygood

    • We stayed at Mace House for two weeks in August 2004. The view of the marsh is spectacular, and with the breeze coming off the water we rarely ran the A/C. My three boys were enchanted with the creek and marsh (caught lots of fish and crabs) and enjoyed it more than the beach (which is just a short walk through the creek at low tide). Rent the kayaks to explore the marsh, especially at sunrise and sunset. We found Mace House to be convenient to shops, restaurants, local plantations and other sights. There are many activities for the entire family in the area. The neighbors are lovely - we were invited to watch a private fireworks display one evening. For a quiet, peaceful trip to the beach, consider Mace House for your next vacation - it truly was one of the best places our family has ever stayed.

    • Our family stayed the first week in August 2004. It was a great family time. We enjoyed our time on the dock, screened in porch, tidal creek and beach. We enjoyed kayaking but found out we were out of shape. We plan on returning the Summer of 2005. Patsy

    • Hi Nancy and Jane, I just want to thank you so much for our wonderful stay in your house. Everything was perfect. What a great spot in the world. We kayaked all over the expanse of marsh and down to the tip of the island, caught some spot tails, and fitted a wedding etc in. Hope everything was in order. We'd love to come again! Best regards, Rosie Bradham

    • We had such a wonderful Pawley's Island experience at your house! Your extra goodies- the crabbing gear, shrimp net, binoculars and bird books really added to the special time we spent there. You have a wonderful collection of cookbooks and it was interesting to review your notes of bird sightings with the multitude of those we had seen during our visit. We rented a kayak and reveled in the bounty of the season - the weather was beautiful - we got some sprinkles one morning that gave these old bones a chance to recouperate after our attempt at paddling upstream with the kayak. I would certainly love another opportunity to enjoy your great place on the creek- have you any information as to the availability throughout the season? Again, thank you for the great escape!! • Our family thoroughly enjoys this lovely setting on the marsh behind Pawleys. You can relax on the porch and feel secluded from the hubub of the island, or join in beach and marsh activities whenever the mood strikes. Things we love: Watching the sunrise over the island/ Kicking back with a good book in a porch rocker or the hammock/Seeing an occasional deer feeding in the front yard/Watching bald eagles, osprey, wading birds, hummers and painted buntings/Sipping a cool drink on the dock at evening...you can see all the way to Litchfield over Pawleys' marsh/Crabbing off the dock/Eating flounder cooked fresh from the "flounder hole" in the creek (when we're lucky enough to catch some)/Kayaking "up" the creek into a marsh so secluded it feels like you're the first to discover it/Visiting Bookgreen Gardens and taking plantation tours around Georgetown/Dining on excellent seafood at Pawley's and Murrells Inlet/Shopping the quaint shops around Pawleys and the outlet sales in Myrtle Beach/And, of course, Pawley's wonderful beach. We hope to develop an extended family of friends who enjoy these same things, year after year at Mace House. A TIP (for those not familiar with South Carolina beaches)-- Try a fall trip. The crowds have dwindled, the marsh is beautiful with deep greens and golds and the weather is usually balmy right up through Christmas. If you have questions, or suggestions on how we can improve...please call. We want you to thoroughly enjoy your stay at Mace House. -- the owners.
