After exploring the world I decided that the best place of all is the Luberon in Provence. Peter Mayle agreed with me and wrote ‘A Year in Provence’ .
You can share my little slice of heaven. I’ve renovated a self-contained wing of my 18th century Provence farmhouse, to make a stunning one-bedroom apartment. South-facing French windows open onto 4 acres of garden with a beautiful pool, two huge, century old plane trees and lavender, and your own pergola to watch the sunset. An alley of pine trees leads to your private entry and parking just next to your cottage. .

Enjoy the flowers and trees typical for Provence (as well as an orchard with 20 different fruit trees of almost all fruit available in this area).
An attractive place the whole year round: In spring listen to the song of the nightingales in the plane trees . In the summer you have use of the owner’s pool just a few steps away from your apartment, accessible through the garden. A Jacuzzi has just been added as well as a sauna/hammam . In autumn a stroll over the markets will enchant you with all the fresh fruit and vegetables, sold directly by the farmers. The wineyards compete in colours from green to yellow and to deep burgundy red...and in the winter you have the Luberon largely to yourself; the world-famous hill-top villages of Gordes, Bonnieux, Menerbes, Lacoste, etc, the wonderful food, from truffles to foie gras, the unspoiled beauty of the Luberon Natural Park.
The apartment is called 'Sheherazade' and you'll notice its design is inspired by many a happy trip to Morocco. The bed was made to my own design in Marrakech. Naturally, being Sheherazade's bed, it is a queen size. If you've experienced French plumbing before, don't be nervous - Sheherazade features a luxury bathroom with twin basins and a walk-in power shower.
The rustic Provençal lifestyle is a great joy, but so are air condition, a dishwasher , microwave and fast DSL Internet access, so you get those too !

Private entrance to Sheherazade is over a small bridge crossing a tributary of the Canal St. Julien and down an alley of pine trees. This canal, dating from the 12th century, is the oldest irrigation system in Provence, and the property is bordered by its tributaries.

If you have any local difficulties or language problems during your stay, it's a great comfort to know that the multilingual owner is right next door, and I'd be delighted to help with anything. On the other hand, I have my own private sun terrace - so you need never see me at all.
And if you want to find my hidden paradise on your GPS Navigating System - here it is:

VRBO Bear with some of his newfound French friends.

VRBO Bear stayed here - 06/11/2009 Bonjour mes amis! The VRBO bear has just returned from the Sheherazade property in Cavaillon, France. The beautiful retreat was everything he had always imagined France to be… picturesque, historic, and charming. In fact, the Sheherazade Cottage was so comfortable that the bear was hard-pressed to travel outside the restful and private grounds. As you can see from his photo, the VRBO Bear made several new friends and enjoyed a cornucopia of local cuisine… including, of course, delicious honey from the Luberon Area of Provence.

Nonetheless, with advice and directions from Monika, the VRBO bear ventured out daily to explore the wonderful locations surrounding him in the south of France. The Sheherazade property provided easy access to so many nearby adventures that the VRBO bear actually lost weight in spite of his unusually high and thoroughly savored caloric intake.

Everything about this European vacation was satisfying and interesting. However, nothing was more delightful than getting to know the property owner Monika and her assortment of furry friends. As with all great vacations, the time passed much too quickly and the VRBO bear could only say… c’est la vie!

Provence Luberon-Sunny Cottage-A/C-Pool-Garden-Jacuzzi!

Year Purchased: 2001

Why the Owner Chose Cavaillon

I ran a B&B for ten years in Menerbes, one of the breathtaking medieval villages just a few minutes away from where I now live . I fell in love with my present home, a 200 years old farm house at the outskirts of Cavaillon, and very close to the beautiful village of Les Taillades - with local small shops where you get everything from fresh bread to strawberries of asparagus or peaches and grapes locally grown... you even have a post office and a pharmacy!

The Unique Benefits at this SELF CONT. LARGE COTTAGE

Staying in SHEHERAZADE's cottage will give you all the privacy you want for your vacation, and yet there is someone just round the wall (me), if you want to have an advice... I also was an interpreter in my former life, so I happen so speak some English...
What my guests told me: they appreciate to be so close to all these Provençal landmarks, the hilltop villages, the fascinating towns like Aix, Arles, or Avignon - even a trip to the Mediterranean Sea to have a Bouillabaisse Fish Soup in Cassis at lunch is just an easy trip away ... and you literally walk on historic grounds wherever you go! Not to forget the markets, every day of the week in another village or town...

A
OPPEDE LE VIEUX

a medieval village with breathtaking views

B
CAVAILLON

easy shopping in Cavaillon - a super super-market (AUCHAN) with a tremendous choice of fresh veggies, fruit, cheese, fish...

C

D
ISLE SUR LA SORGUE

This is the haven for Antique lovers and thos who just want to stroll over the flea market... your MUST for Sunday Morning!

E
Saumane and Fontaine de Vaucluse

Saumane - this is a wonderfully landscaped GOlf Club with 18 holes (if you walk them, you will have a really good exercise! And Fontaine de Vaucluse is famous for its water hole - nobody knows how dee

F
MENERBES, LACOSTE, BONNIEUX

the famous hilltop villages with a famous past - in Menerbes lived Dora Mar, one of Picasso's loves, and in Lacoste lived the Marquis de Sade, known for another art of 'love'... you can easily combine

Owner's Map of Cavaillon

My name is Monika, I am of German origin, but a kick of a horse helped me to take probably the most important decision in my life: to quit my job as a journalist and to settle down in Provence - which I did 18 years ago (and I never regretted it one single minute!)
I have discovered Senegal in West Africa in 2005, and since then I return there regularly at least twice a year to do humanitarian work, mainly providing schoolbooks, dictionaries and other essentials to schools in remote areas of Casamance - accessible only by several hours' boatride! I am also editing a photobook from every trip (available to buy), and you are welcome to share my experience from Black Africa... this photo, by the way, was done last year with 'my' kids....

    • This was a wonderful place to explore the Hill towns of Provence. Although close to the boulangerie, super market and restaurants yet a peaceful, very private oasis. We loved getting fresh produce from the local farms. Monika was the perfect host with many great ideas for exploring the area. One week is not enough to see all you will want to see. We have wonderful memories of this place!

    • My wife and I spent a lovely week at Monika's oasis and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Everything is as per the photographs. This property has many great features (as mentioned by other guests) but one of the best is that we virtually had the pool to ourselves. Our preferred routine was to visit any outdoor sites as early in the day as possible and then spend the afternoon in the pool or lounging around "our" yard, under the plane tree. And Monika was always available to provide knowledgeable answers to any questions we might have - she certainly knows Provence!

    Jim and Tom ,
    • We were fortunate enough to stay with Monika in early June this year. Our only regret was not having enough time to spend at her lovely home (what with all the wonderful sites around). The grounds and home were beautiful and Monika could not have been more welcoming. Her four legged friends made it all the more fun! Nothing is too much for Monika to make her guests comfortable and she even gladly helped out when I needed to find a dentist! I would not hesitate to stay here again or to recommend Sheherazade to friends and family. Merci Monika!!!

    • We stayed here the first week of July. The studio met all of our needs and the swimming pool was very welcome at the end of a long day sight seeing. We were close to many lovely towns and villages. The scenery took our breath away. Monika is a very charming host and was very gracious to us with a little problem we had. A very memorable holiday for us.

    • We stayed at this lovely property for two weeks 9/15/2007 - 9/29/2007, and would highly recommend it for any couples who want to explore the Provence region from a very central location. The apartment was very nicely decorated and contained everything needed for a lovely Provencal holiday. Monika is a very charming and knowledgable hostess and an excellent cook. We wished we could have stayed longer.

    • We have spent more than 10 holidays in Provence over the years and have stayed in some very nice accommodation. This studio, however, takes the cake. It is superbly appointed and equipped, is situated in a beautiful and tranquil garden and is hosted by warm and friendly Monica. We recommend it highly. We have only just returned home and have already made our booking for 2008.

    • This was my first trip to France and Scheherazade was the ideal place to stay. I came with a friend and we both loved the area and Monika! We took day trips all around the region, to Avignon Arles, Les Baux, Aix and the Chateauneuf de Pape to name a few. Monika recommended several good restuarants and places to see. She was very gracious and is a very good cook. She also helped me out by making a call to rental car company to help me work out a problem. I only wish we could have stayed longer. It really was heaven and I can't wait to return.

    • We had SUCH a lovely time staying at Sheherazade in August 2006. It was our honeymoon and it provided the perfect mix of peace and luxury for this unique holiday. Monika was utterly fantastic, making our stay superb by giving helpful advice and lots of special touches to our stay. The accommodation itself was as spotless and wonderful as all the comments I had read said it was! We had a truly amazing time and hope very much to return soon. Thank you so much Monika!

    • We spent a week in this lovely place. It was without doubt the best equipped self-catering accomodation that we have had, and that rarity, a place perfect for two people. We enjoyed the location - perfect for trips to several delightful hill- top villages, the weather - very warm but not too hot (first week in September), the peace and privacy of the garden, the wonderful fresh organic fruit growing there, the swimming pool to yourself, and last but not least - Monika's friendly hospitality.

    • Everything at Sheherazade has been just as wonderful during our second stay (July 2006) as we remembered from last time. This remains a very special place for two (or three) people to rest and unwind in spacious luxury. We took advantage of new low-cost flights into Marseille airport, only 40 minutes drive away. The ideal location of the apartment not too far from the autoroute allows for great access to a wide range of places to visit. Monika is a lovely host with a wealth of advice and she is happy to be as discreet or as companiable as you would prefer. We valued her continuing improvements, including luxury bath-robes and the addition of air conditioning, which was especially appreciated in this year's extreme heat! This time around we booked for next year before leaving. We look forward to sharing the beauty of Sheherazade and Provence with our daughter who cannot any longer resist joining us in this peaceful idyll.
