A medieval tower house with sweeping views over the Mediterranean Sea. Meticulously restored with modern comforts and an eye for textures, this 3 bedroom house provides an ideal base for exploring the nearby beaches, monuments and hiking areas of southern Greece, or simply sipping ouzo and soaking up history and sunshine in the 1200 square meter enclosed garden. In the deepest south of old Greece, the Mani Peninsula, this is the beautifully restored tower house of the Manoleas family, with original structures dating from the 1600s. It has been fully modernized while retaining its original character, and decorated with local antiques. Located on the outskirts of Thalames, once the capital of the region in the Middle Ages, now a protected monument of winding streets and crumbling Byzantine churches. The house is set in beautifully landscaped gardens (1200 square meters) with ancient olive trees. The village sits at 400 meters altitude on the slopes of the Taygetus Mountains, 10 minutes from beautiful beaches
The Mani, a corner of ancient Greece This is a property for travelers who want more than a usual resort vacation. Beaches there are plenty, some sand and some rocky, with crystal clear water for snorkeling, and the Taygetus mountains behind them offer amazing hiking country. What is unique however is the opportunity to live in a restored piece of history, A medieval tower house in a working Greek village. The olive mill and shop is just down the road, local honey and mountain herbs are sold in the village square, and vans selling fresh local fruit and vegetables come by daily. The village has cornerstones with ancient Roman and Greek inscriptions, Byzantine churches are hidden around many corners, and ancient Sparta is just 30 km away, on the other side of the Taygetus.
Pyrgos Manoleas is our home, not a rental property. We spent many years touring Greece on a motorcycle before finally deciding on Thalames and this property, which we bought in completely decrepit state from the Manoleas family. We have spent 5 years, a huge amount of money, and lots of affection on restoring it to its original glory, bringing antique oak planks from Turkey for the floors, hand crafted tiles from Italy, hiring a German master craftsman to supervise works, and a talented Greek architect for the overall design. The garden has been carefully landscaped to provide many sitting areas with different ambiance and views for every season. The ancient olive and mulberry trees have been preserved, with Mediterranean flowering shrubs and aromatic plants rambling over old stone walls. We hope to retire there someday, and in the meantime rent it to people we consider guests, not clients.
We live and work in Italy, but our property is managed for us by our friends Yoanna and Kiriakos, who take care of the garden and house. They live in the main part of the town, just a few hundred yards away, where Kiriakos runs one of the two local coffee shops. They can supply basic provisions, however a car is recommended for ease of movement, as public transport is limited

About the owner: We are a French-American couple who both work for the United Nations, and have spent most of the past decade in developing countries working on emergency relief projects. Our main base of operations is Rome Italy, where we currently live and work. Our mobility is a bit more limited by a growing family, but we still get to Thalames 3-4 times a year
Why the Owner Chose Stoupa: We have been coming to Greece for 25 years, and have toured pretty much the whole country by motorcycle. We looked at a number of different areas in the islands and mainland, but kept coming back to the Mani, which I had discovered in 1989 through Patrick Leigh Fermor's famous book. The Mani is just about perfect for us; lots of amazing old stone war towers, still authentically Greek, but with plenty of good facilities, and within an easy drive of Athens and Kalamata airports. First we chose Thalames, then found a house there. The renovation of this very old property took us five years, three engineers, one architect, two builders, and, of course, a lot more money than originally planned, but then we are pretty picky, and the Antiquities Department was breathing down our neck the whole time. Thalames is one of the few 'historic conservation villages' in the region, totally protected.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa: The house has a unique balance of privacy and proximity. It is on the very outer edge of the town of Thalames, so no houses between it and the sea. At the same time it is just a 200 yard stroll to the main town square, with it's huge plane tree providing shade to a wonderful taverna, and the main road of the area running through it. It is a 10 minute drive from gorgeous beaches, but out of the crowd, and in cooler air of the Taygetus foothills. The property itself is a living piece of history, with three foot thick stone walls, surrounded by gnarly ancient olive trees. We have put a huge effort into the renovation, matching modern comforts and style with tradition. The floors are made of antique oak ship planking, the ground floors and patios are paved with cut green slate of Evia, the kitchen has counters of Carrara marble and hand drawn ceramic tiles from Vietri, both imported from Italy, as are all the chestnut wood windows, doors and shutters. Appliances are all German, and the beds have firm spring mattresses. It is a great spot for anyone looking to experience a piece of authentic Greece while living in style and comfort, close to beaches and great hiking country.
