Thank you so much for considering Hawaii, Maui, and Hale Kai O’Kihei for your vacation. With so many wonderful and exotic holiday destinations to choose from, the Internet bringing access to them right to your home, and vacation time and dollars so precious, we appreciate you taking the time to visit our site.

In finishing, furnishing, and maintaining our apartments 208 and 203 (www.vrbo.com/241190), we started from a simple premise: what do we like about where we stay when we’re on holiday? Whether we’re doing a home exchange, staying in a reciprocal private club in another city, or in an apartment or condo booked through VRBO, we want a place that speaks to intimacy and individuality.

We don’t like cold, impersonal, one-size-fits-all experiences, where the bare minimum is what’s provided. We want to stay in places where our needs are important, where our time spent travelling to the destination and the cost of getting there is understood and appreciated. We want to stay in homes and apartments where the human touch of the owner abounds — where the owner’s attention to detail and focus on our experience are always top of mind.

It’s all about passion. Your experience with us needs to be exceptional. From the moment you walk in the door, we want you to experience an ocean-front home away from home that is warm and welcoming. Perhaps it’s the colours, the cleanliness, or the carefully selected artwork. Maybe it’s the fresh flowers and wine. Or perhaps its one of the dozens of other little touches — like the beach chairs, beach towels, snorkel gear, binoculars — that make arriving and getting started on your time off and time away just that much quicker and easier.

We spend a great deal of time listening to our guests and tailoring our efforts to their needs. The personal touch infuses all that we do, and that passion is fuelled each time a guest returns, or recommends our apartments 208 or 203 to family members and friends.

Again, thank you for choosing Hawaii and Maui, and for considering our apartment 208 at Hale Kai O’Kihei. We’d like you to stay with us, and experience our efforts to make your stay exceptional and to keep you coming back, whenever work schedules, family commitments, or the need to ‘just get away’ allow.

Now, information about what awaits you at Hale Kai O’Kihei and apartment 208 . . . .

If you're looking to stay in one of the nicest oceanfront apartments available at Hale Kai O’Kihei, then you've found it! And whether you are staying in our Unit #208 or #203, Hale Kai O’Kihei offers the Hawaiian experience you've dreamt of.

If “perfect” is the best word to describe the location of Hale Kai O’Kihei — on a palm-tree bordered golden-sand beach on a quiet residential street off busy South Kihei Road — then “stunning” is the only word to describe Unit #208, a fully renovated, no-expense-spared one-bedroom oasis on the second floor of this Kihei beachfront jewel.

From gorgeous cherry wood cabinets in the kitchen and bath with silent closing drawers, elegant granite kitchen and bath countertops, Kohler fixtures, Grohe faucets, exquisitely designed and tiled shower with glass block and found-pebble floor, virtually seamless 18” x 18” tile from the front door to the outer edge of the lanai, top-end appliances including flat-glass cooktop, ultra low-sound dishwasher and compact clothes washer . . .

. . . to a work-of-art ‘glass wall’ to the lanai with feather-light centre-opening doors, a peaceful but high-efficiency Fujitsu Halcyon 18,000 BTU split air conditioner, and yes, even an electric sunshade on the lanai allowing full-lanai use and ocean views, even at the height of the afternoon sun . . .

. . . and backed by only the highest quality and thread-count linens and beddings for refreshing tropical sleep, unit 208 builds on the perfect beachside location of Hale Kai O’Kihei and puts you in the picture in one of the most luxurious and fully outfitted units this jewel of a building has to offer.

And when you add this stunning unit to the perfect location? The Hawaiian experience you've dreamt of, matched by few other units in HKOK.

Relaxing in unit #208 on the second floor of this beautiful Kihei beachfront property, the stress and pressures of hectic Mainland life are all but forgotten. Offering privacy and calm amid the sight, sound, and feel of gently breaking waves, swaying palm trees, and soothing ocean breezes, Hale Kai O’Kihei, with just over 50 units on three floors, delivers South Maui’s best boutique accommodation and oceanfront experience.

Enjoy the ocean view from your private lanai. Walk across the lawn beneath the swaying palms to swim in the warm, breathlessly blue Pacific. Stroll the quiet and largely undiscovered beach and return re-connected and renewed. Linger in the pool taking in the green lawn, the golden-sand beach, the Island of Lanai, and the sky that goes on forever. Watch the sunset from the warm sand at the edge of the beach, the palms behind you, the future and its possibilities directly ahead. Do all this knowing that all the conveniences of Kihei are just minutes away, but won’t keep you away long from your ocean paradise.

How far away? Times Supermarket (formerly Star Market) is one block away, and Longs Drugs, banks, restaurants and other shops and services are a mere three-minute walk from our door . . . But with shopping and errands complete, walk west, towards the Pacific, and the sights and sounds of South Kihei Road are soon behind you, and forgotten, as you re-enter the peace and calm of our residential neighbourhood on the ocean’s shore.

Put yourself in the picture in one of the most beautiful units Hale Kai O’Kihei has to offer, with all the amenities you will need for the Maui vacation you’ve dreamt of.

Have you checked out the calendar only to find that unit #208 isn't available for the period you'd like to visit? Don't worry! Just have a look at our listing for HKOK 203 at VRBO/241190 -- these are two of the nicest units in HKOK, and each offers you the Hawaiian holiday you've been waiting for!

We really enjoyed your beautiful place at Hale O Kihei. We had a great week, even saw a whale off in the distance with the help of your binoculars. Your attention to detail and all the amenities you offered were wonderful and very much appreciated. Hopefully the next time we make our trip to Maui, we will return to the same spot.

Owner response: Thank you so much for visiting Hawaii, and Maui, and for staying with us! We've chosen the furniture and decor in order to create a tropical feeling for guests, the moment they arrive and step into their home on the beach. Your note rightly reminds me that it's always our mission to offer guests a place where they can quickly and effortlessly settle in to the Hawaii experience they've imagined, and anticipated. It's the amenities like the binoculars, great beach chairs, snorkel gear, beach towels and gear, and a host of other touches and details that allow guests to make the apartment theirs, and very quickly put work and other cares behind them as they take in the sights and beauties that are Hawaii. I hope your travels do bring you back to Hawaii and Maui, and if they should also bring you back to stay with us, you can rest assured that we'll have done even more to make your stay with us exceptional in every way!

Thank you so much and we have been meaning to write to tell you that. We cannot properly express to you what a wonderful time we had in Maui. We have much experience with VRBO’s and we have never before dealt with people who are so professional, have their act together so well, that additionally provide a product that is absolutely second to none. In fact, we would never choose a 5-star resort over what your apartment provides – it was magnificent and we so hope that our schedule and your schedule find a perfect overlap sometime in the future. Our stay couldn’t have been better and we will long remember those sunrises, sunsets, and everything in between, especially the joy of watching those whales through the binoculars. What a place and it felt like home from the moment we walked across the threshold. We really value the careful selection of materials, fixtures, and décor and it is clear that you do as well. Thanks again for every wonderful second of those 20 days.

Owner response: Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a lovely note. In reading it, and now in responding to it, I am struck by this one, single point: Your note and the sentiments expressed in it are precisely why we do what we do. Guests deserve an exceptional experience for making the decision to travel to Hawaii and Maui. Time and resources are so precious these days and Hawaii is, for many of our guests, not the closest place to which they could travel for a holiday. So our aim is to make our guests delighted that they made the decision to visit Hawaii and to stay with us. And in receiving such a gracious note, my first and lasting thought is: Let’s do better! Your note has already been printed on a card and is affixed to my computer screen, where I can see it. It’s just that powerful. And it’s a reminder to care, to pay attention to the details, and to work like mad to give people the very best experience we can. Again, thank you for such a kind note. Hawaii and Maui would be all the better for a return visit by such thoughtful and considerate travellers, and I hope that your ongoing adventures bring you back to this very special part of the world.

Thanks for getting another amazing unit at HKOK! We usually stay in the first unit you bought but thought we should try this one. What a great condo. We can’t decide which is our favorite – they are both superb. The new in-unit secure Wi-Fi is also appreciated as we tend to have to bring some work with us. The increased speed it provides gets us out on the beach faster! Every time we visit we try to figure out how to stay longer and/or retire earlier. Owner response: You two were amongst our very first guests when we purchased our first apartment here back in 2008 (which is listed on VRBO, too), and you’ve been back every year since, this time in our second apartment which we purchased in 2011. So first off, thank you for continuing to visit Hawaii, Maui, and for returning to Hale Kai O’Kihei. And thank you very much for staying with us all these years, and for trying our new apartment! I have to say that it is such a delight when guests make the decision to come back year after year. We use a lot of local business to outfit our places and to keep them current, and I know they also appreciate it when I tell them that their handiwork and craftsmanship play such a pivotal role in drawing people back to Maui. Good catch on our new secure — and free! — WiFi we put in place exclusively for our guests in our two apartments here. With everyone using iPads and the like, the building’s system is now overwhelmed. Like our guests, I often find myself working when I’m staying there, and one dropped video conference in November was all that was required to make this additional investment in our guests’ comfort! For the majority of our guests, life’s too busy, and time’s too short to spend it waiting for an Internet connction! So for you, for all our returning guests, and for those seeking to experience Maui the way it should be done — from the lanai of a well-fitted apartment offered by an detail-obsessed owner, on the edge of the Pacific, where everything you see, smell, and hear says “Hawaii” — rest assured that we’re constantly making the investments in both our apartments that respect the time and effort our guests put into making their Maui holiday a reality. Thank you!

Upon our arrival, the unit was spotlessly clean and there were fresh flowers and a bottle of wine awaiting us. The unit is beautifully decorated and equiped with everything one needs for a great holiday in Hawaii: Great music selection for the CD player, beach chairs and umbrella, boogie boards, snorkel sets and cooler bag. The kitchen is fully equiped as well, so all you need to do is the grocery shopping. The units in HKOK are not large, (absolutely fine for two) so I wouldn't recommend it for families, but that being said, there certainly were families staying in the units, even one bedroom units, and there are some two bedroom units. The complex has barbeques for use by those who choose to dine in. HKOK is in a perfect location in Maui to enjoy all the island has to offer, and this unit is among the best in the complex. It's also one of the few complexes in Kehei that is waterfront, so all units have perfect water views. I would highly recommend this unit for a couple travelling together.

Owner response: Thank you for visiting, and for making a comment on cleanliness. We were very thorough in selecting our on-site crew, and we picked the best people on Maui. Full stop. I'll share your comment with them, and they'll be delighted! And good for you for getting right into the CDs, using the beach chairs, umbrella, boogie boards and other supplies! Many of our guests are like us: There's limited time to get away, and when we do, we want to walk through the door into a place that makes it as easy as possible for us to get into the holiday mood. So that's how we set up our places at Hale Kai O' Kihei, and we're so glad it worked for you, too! Thanks again for choosing Hawaii, Maui, and HKOK. Come back, anytime.

The unit met our expectations, plus. The condo unit is decorated with beautiful artwork that compliments the rest of the decor. The appliances, rain shower and all the rest of the amenities make it so easy to love the unit. The extra wide patios on the lanai make the view of the ocean breathtaking. Thank you for letting us stay in your unit. We definitely will be back.

Owner response: First off, thank you for choosing Hawaii and Maui for your holiday. There is much to choose from in selecting a holiday destination, and I'm delighted that your decision to visit this wonderful part of the world delivered the experience you were looking for. And I cannot tell you how important it is to see someone write "The unit met our expectations, plus." It's the "plus" part that tells us that the time we spend in selecting decor, adding features, and renewing and upgrading supplies is well spent. We'll continue to make this investment, so that if your travels should bring you back to visit us again, your experience will be even better!

Your condo was terrific!!! The unit itself is very tastefully decorated and updated! Everything we needed was right there! Having the washer was a big help! Of course the view was just outstanding and the complex was quiet and very relaxing! The pool was spotless! Your location is extremely convenient to restaurants, shops and airport. Thank you so much for the late check out when our flight got delayed!!! We appreciated your assistance! Mahalo again!

Owner response: It’s hard to imagine that with VRBO there are ‘opening nights’ but you were our very first VRBO guest in apartment 208. We took possession in May, and since then, and through much of the summer, it’s been all about painting, new furniture, linens and appliances, finding local and vintage Hawaiian artwork, and all the little details and touches we hope make a stay in 208 seem like Maui, and ‘your place’ in Maui from the moment you walk in the door. Your comments make the effort so very worthwhile, and we thank you very much for taking the time to write. We’ve always tried to accommodate early arrivals and late checkouts, and flight delays. We visited Hale Kai O’ Kihei for years before we bought apartment 203 in 2008, and one thing we always disliked was having to wait around to check in if we arrived earlier in the day. But having to check-out at 11:00 am when we didn’t fly out until much later in the day was worse -- driving around on the last day of our vacation with all our belongings in the car, like the Beverly Hillbillies; terrible way to end a holiday. So whether it’s early arrivals or late checkouts, we always try to find a way to accommodate guests, and no, we don't charge extra for it. If we can make it work, it’s our pleasure to do so. I think your note captures the beauty of Hale Kai O’ Kihei perfectly. It really is the case that if you want to spend your holiday at HKOK (other than venturing out for errands like daily shopping if you like fresh food) all it means is that from sunrise to sunset, everything that you see, do, hear, smell, and experience is Hawaii. Right on the beach. You’ve made me want to check airfares to see if I can sneak in another trip down myself!

                          Year Purchased: 2011

About the owner: We're like many of the guests we've met at Hale Kai O' Kihei over the years -- we've got demanding jobs, and put a lot of effort into our work. So there are times when we just want to get away from the stress for a few days, and get to a place where living is just easier, the demands less. That philosophy guided our renovation and redecoration of our home in Hale Kai O’Kihei #203 when we purchased it in 2008. And the same approach influenced the additions and touches we've added to this stunningly renovated unit #208, which we purchased in 2011. We've added more “Maui” colour though a restfully exotic paint palette, thoughtful furnishings, finishings, and appliances, and additional locally sourced vintage Hawaiian artwork. We don’t like to pack too much when we come to Hale Kai O’Kihei, so those hassle-saving details from 203 have been added to this unit as well, from snorkels, fins, and masks, boogie boards and beach chairs right down to binoculars and tropical CDs. We’re always learning more about what makes a stay at Hale Kai O’Kihei an outstanding experience for ourselves and our guests. And with #203 and #208, two of the nicest units in Hale Kai O’Kihei -- itself the best in boutique accommodation in South Maui -- we’re perfecting the delivery of the Hawaiian experience that we and our guests have dreamt of! So join us in the great Maui adventure at Hale Kai O’Kihei! Come and visit and discover the Hawaiian holiday of your dreams!

Why the Owner Chose Hale Kai O Kihei:
We’ve been visiting HKOK since 1997, and bought #203 in 2008. This remarkable place, and the experience it offers, gets in your blood. Departures for us and our guests aren’t the end -- they’re just the start of planning for the next trip. And that’s the best way to finish a holiday -- making plans for the next one. Each time we visit, HKOK delivers. Sometimes we’re doing errands and chores; other times, we’re true ‘guests’ ourselves, relishing the chance to do blissfully, decadently nothing. Just taking in the sights, the sounds, and the beauty of it all. And the great thing is that it’s all there, visible from the private lanai or for direct interaction by way of a few paces across the lawn, through the palm trees to the beach. In March 2011, on a beach walk from HKOK, past the oceanfront estates on Halama St. through Kalama Park, and over a coffee at Kihei Caffe, the decision was made to buy a second unit. Why? Because in a world of sometimes wearying change HKOK is a welcome, restorative constant. And therein lies the HKOK charm: Shopping and services are a block away and those farther afield run the gamut from Macy’s to Tiffany’s. For us, the real draw continues to be this simple delight: Once we get in the door of #203 or 208, and put our groceries away, we're set, and can experience much of what we want from Maui, even whale watching, from our own lanai or our own front yard and beach. The lure of Maui’s beaches, restaurants and places to watch the world slowly go by remains. But units 203 and 208, uniquely renovated offer a wondrous Hawaiian experience, all day long -- one many of us dreamt of in childhood on ‘sick days’ in colder climes, when game-show hosts Bob Barker or Tom Kennedy whisked winners away to Hawaii, affording us all a Technicolor glimpse of this exotic paradise. Sitting on the edge of the beach with a glass of wine, long after the sun has disappeared? Still a star-gazer's paradise, and an awesome way to end any day.

The Unique Benefits at this Condo:
We love walking the beach first thing in the morning, before the sun peeks out over the edge of Haleakala, when ours are the first footprints in the sand. We love the way that in the mid-morning, the water just off the shore is dead calm, and is as many shades of blue, blue-green, and turquoise you can count. We love watching the horizon out past the shallows, where the water turns a deep, alluring blue, when the breaching Humpbacks send plumes of bright white spray into the air. We love the midday when beach walkers and sun bathers take a break from the waves and the sun, seeking shade and sustenance, and a quiet falls over Hale Kai O’Kihei. We love the mid-afternoon awakening when the wind picks up, the waves are more playful, drawing windsurfers and kite surfers to the shore and the challenges beyond. We love the late afternoon, when the sun accelerates its race for the far side of Lanai and the lawn is a velvety canvas of yellows and greens, set against the dark slope of West Maui to the north, and a still-clear sky speaks to the promise of stars and far-away dreams to follow. We love when the sun finally winks out behind Lanai, and those who have assembled on the lawn and beach to watch its farewell hug, kiss, or squeeze hands, in that knowing gesture which acknowledges that this one moment, this one sunset, experienced together, was what called them to Maui, and which they will use, in the years ahead, as the touchstone to remember their trip here, and why it was so special. And then we love when darkness falls, and the two of us head down to the beach, lie back in the sand, and take in the enormity of the clarity and depth of the wondrous night sky.
