Location: Dixon, New Mexico, USA (20 miles from Taos & 45 miles from Santa Fe)
Accommodations: Adobe House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths (Sleeps 6)
This property, called the birdhouse, is available for rent from January 4, 2007. The Dixon area is noted for its creative houses and art studio tour. This recently completed, adobe house is one of those labors of love. Designed and built by a sculptor, it is backed up against wilderness cliffs and enclosed around the southside with a serpentine mud wall. The various tile jobs are reminiscent of Austrian artist Hundertwasser. The barrel-vaulted ceilings in the curving hallway and master bedroom suggest the mosque in Abiquiu.
This Non-Smoking house is about one and a half miles from the Rio Grande. The gorge itself, where it gets steep is north about ten miles. Then the hills lower down to the river. Nights in Dixon in the summer are heavenly, cool to chilly. The windows get opened when the sun goes down and closed again in the morning and the super-insulated walls hold the cool all day. It is so insulated that in the winter a small gas stove in the shape of a wood stove heats the entire place. There are very few right angles in the place. The south wall has floor to ceiling windows arranged in a gradual curve. Inside this curve is a greywater planter, where tall greenery grows year round.
The master bedroom and the meditation/studio space is divided by a complex closet/chiffarobe wood sculpture closet kind of piece. One bathroom has a 50's lavender sink and tile on the walls, counter, and floor, not in a grid pattern but voluptuously curving around making little dramas of movement, little train wrecks involving four or five colors of tile.
Ceilings are all different types and colors, splayed 4x10's painted an array of reds with a whitewashed ceiling above, vigas and rough sawn ceiling in one, bull-nosed plaster in one, and the master bedroom is the most dramatic, an entire large room that is barrel-vaulted plaster. Kitchen cabinets are spalted chestnut from a cabinet maker nearby.
Located at the end of an arroyo with miles of BLM land to be discovered, just 20 miles from Taos and 45 miles from Santa Fe, it is the perfect spot for visiting the nearby wonders or the stillness of a retreat.
