Relax and revitalize at the Compass Rose Cottage on Salt Cay in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Salt Cay is the 'Island Time Forgot' and will remind you of the Old Caribbean. Come see why the TCI is Beautiful By Nature.
Salt Cay offers world class scuba diving with Salt Cay Divers, whale watching and snorkeling as well.
In fact, Salt Cay Divers, for the 2013 whale season, was participating in a Humpback Whale research project. Go whale watching and participate in the research project with a marine biologist, a first in the TCI area. This could be a once in a lifetime experience starting in January. Whales have already been heard and sited in the Salt Cay area so we expect (but cannot promise of course) a great whale watching season.
Salt Cay is an historic island with a candidacy for designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Historic salinas, windmill ruins and building ruins of the centuries old salt industry remain on Salt Cay.
The Rose is a private and secluded home location. It is situated on a rise on the southern end of Salt Cay. Nothing is far away and it is an easy bike ride or walk to the dock, Salt Cay Divers and the Coral Reef Cafe. Shopping at Dickenson's, Miss Pat's and Nettie's is readily available as well.
Great snorkeling is a short walk down the trail to the beach. The Rose is a great starting spot for shell, flotsam and jetsam searches on the various beaches nearby. Secluded beach areas, such as the South Land's End are within easy walking distance. Check out the rocky shores for the blow hole.
The Compass Rose is situated near 'Queen's Land' with plenty of open space surrounding it. There are free roaming donkeys and cows as reminders of the salt trade times. Chickens, geckos, herons and Osprey, may well come and go around and in the yard as Mother Nature dictates during your stay. The Rose is a modern home in the middle of old Caribbean times and ways.
The screened 'Florida' type porch is a joy to spend your day or evening hours relaxing (and napping) on comfy rattan furniture. The dining room table is on the airy screen porch as well. The screen room is on the south side of the property and features a sunning porch with lounge chairs and total privacy.
The house is cooled by Caribbean style shutters with screened windows to catch the trade winds that bathe the island. There are ceiling fans in the living areas as well as oscillating fans for guest use.
A whale watching deck on the north side of the home affords an almost 360 degree view of the island, beaches and ocean. A quiet little deck at the back door allows you to catch the island breezes and afternoon shade.
The whale watching deck is a perfect place to watch the sun set and hope you catch a 'Green Flash' on the horizon. Sip a cold drink and remember the day. Take your coffee up there in the morning and watch the island wake up.
The home itself has a wide screen HD TV, DVD collection (described by a guest as 'fantastic'), CD collection, iPod docking station and surround sound Yamaha stereo system.
The kitchen features an electric range, full refrigerator and freezer, entertainment island, microwave, Krups coffee maker, and a cook's array of tools, kitchen wares, dishes, glasses and basics with which to cook. We can't promise what's in the fridge, but usually there are the basics with which to cook or make a sandwich. Stores are nearby to help with those incidentals not available during your stay.
There is a Weber gas grill for evenings you choose to cook at home, maybe getting fresh fish from local fishermen at the dock.
The bedroom features a comfortable deep mattress queen sized bed with Egyptian cotton sheets. There are two large hanging closets. The couch is a new rattan futon with a full size temperpedic type mattress. We can verify it is a great napping place as well. There are also two inflatable twin beds.
The bath has a glass brick shower, tiled counter and large closet for extra guests and items. There is a private, outdoor shower for your use as well.
WiFi is subject to availability and the equipment guests bring with them. The Coral Reef has WiFi subject to availability as well. Cell phone service is subject to available service and your carrier's roaming charges.
There are bicycles on site for guest use.
Check out The Compass Rose Cottage on Facebook and see even more images and great links. Be sure to look for the St. Patrick's Day Humpback Whale encounter on You Tube as well.
Air travel to Salt Cay on regularly scheduled Caicos Express Airlines flights is Monday, Wednesday afternoons, Friday, and Saturday. Charter travel can be arranged as well.

We thoroughly enjoyed the house and the island. We found everything easily accessible on foot or on bikes. We also liked the location of the house and the easy walk to the beach or to "downtown". A small and sprarsely populated island. Debbie and her crew were very helpful and made all the arrangements for usRecommended for: Adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you so much for the kind review. We are all glad you enjoyed Salt Cay and the Compass Rose. Please come back and see us again.

We had a wonderful, romantic and adventurous time on the island time forgot. However the local folks we met will never be forgotten for their kindness and hospitality. The island is a true place of serenity. We truly enjoyed staying at the Compass Rose and found no other place on island that compares.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/1

As we prepare for the upcoming season with more improvements and comforts, we have included comments from our guestbook over the past 10 years of renting The Rose. So please read some of the comments our guests, new and repeat visitors have left for us. We strive to provide a home away from home; a place you want to come back to again and again as if it were your second home. Salt Cay, as an island, is the type of place where the local residents make you feel like you just came home too. Every year we try to improve something, keeps things current and fresh. This year is no different as we prepare for the 2012 season. Joel and I hope to see YOUR name in our guestbook soon.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

There was so much going on this trip…Samantha (the donkey) gave birth to Black Beauty, the chickens and their peeps, visiting with the whales, diving both here and Grand Turk. This is our 4th visit to the Compass Rose and we truly love this cottage. We feed the chickens corn and rice and plump them up a little and in return the rooster doesn’t crow until 8 am. We hope to spend many more winters here away from the cold of Wisconsin.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

30th Anniversary for us. Wanted a quiet tropical paradise---this was it! Nice breeze all 5 days which kept any bugs away. Bike rides and walking made it relaxed and slow paced. Being only 2 of 8 tourists on island made us feel very pampered. Debbie Manos (Salt Cay Divers) was an excellent hostess.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My gentleman friend and I love Salt Cay and the Compass Rose. We went whale watching and had a wonderful time and saw lots of whales. We got in the water with them and couldn't believe the thrill of it. I love to swim and I spent hours down below the house at the beach there. We, or I, could spend hours and no one else would come by. We had it all to ourselves. We hiked around the island alot. North Beach is so fantastic, it's hard to believe there is a beach like that not covered in condos and high rises! At the house, we enjoyed the romantic atmosphere, the privacy and the comfortable nature of the home. We didn't even turn our cell phones on nor did we even care to check our email! Maybe that was it, it felt like home to us and we plan to return again.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2000
About the owner: Joel and Michele McNair fell in love with Salt Cay during their scuba diving trips. Though living in California, the McNair's regularly visit the island. They purchased the home when it was almost finished and put their personal touches into the property. Michele regularly writes articles in 'Times of The Islands' about the history and people of Salt Cay.
Why the Owner Chose Salt Cay:
The McNair's purchased the home given its private location. It is the last home on the island and affords an almost 360 degree view of the island. The home has been available for rental for over 11 years with many satisfied guests who return again and again. We have a verified history of safe, dependable renting.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
While on island we enjoy the company of the Islanders who have opened their hearts to us. Salt Cay is family and sharing their histories and lives is, as with all families, deeply rewarding. Meet the people of Salt Cay and become part of our family.
