In Dublin 4 situated at the Donnybrook end of leafy Ailesbury Road, but also adjacent to Ballsbridge and just a 10 min bus ride from St Stephen's Green is our very comfortable owner-maintained, spacious holiday apartment for maximum TWO people, ( if one is a child, they must be over 10) , minimum stay ONE WEEK. You can stay for a shorter period but it is still the weekly charge, for your stay.
Unusually well equipped and very large for a one-bedroomed apartment, it is not so much a normal rental place but more a home from home. We hope you will find everything you need here to make your holiday in Dublin perfect although no guarantee on weather! Everything is included in the rent, no hidden charges. For those arriving by air and reluctant to venture into Dublin traffic, this is very conveniently placed less than 5 mins walk from the Aircoach stop. Ideal for couples wanting a week in Dublin, visiting academics or business people needing a quiet and comfortable place to stay close to the centre and the universities and for anyone wanting to escape hotel life and have their own space. Our flexible start dates allow for weekly stays starting any day of the week. (7 day minimum). This third floor apartment in a prestigious block on Ailesbury Road is exceptionally light and spacious with great views from its large picture windows and balcony. The whole apartment benefits from early morning sunshine as it faces East.
The well equipped kitchen has a dishwasher and microwave and a good sized fridge freezer. A table by the window provides seating for two looking out over the Georgian houses on Angelsea Road. As this is our own holiday home, we leave a selection of 'dry' goods in the cupboard so as well as supplies of tea, coffee (including Nespresso capsules), sugar etc. there are also things like rice and pasta as well as all the basic extras we use in the kitchen like washing up liquid, cling film, foil etc. so you don't have to rush to the shops for the basics right away.
The sitting room has a dining area and plenty of comfortable seating. Broadband access is wifi. Settle in for a cosy evening in front of the fire (you can burn special smokeless logs, available locally) watching multi-channel TV, a DVD or borrow a book from the bookshelves. The balcony is off the sitting room and looks over Dublin towards the sea (although this is hidden by trees so I can't claim sea view!). Very occasionally (I will tell you when, as it is only a few times a year) there are concerts at Simmonscourt, down the road and you can take a 'balcony seat', if so minded, to listen (or put ear plugs in!). See below if I have listed one under 'other activities'.
The large bedroom has a super king-sized bed and plenty of storage space. The bed has two new comfortable single matresses made up with single duvets so although more suitable for couples, it could be used by two close friends. Off the bedroom is a fully equipped bathroom with an over the bath shower. The apartment also has a cloakroom off the hall with basin and loo and this also houses a washing machine. Iron and ironing board are also provided.
The whole apartment is centrally heated except in high summer and benefits from constant hot water. It is equipped with a sensitive smoke alarm. Also a fan.
It is five mins walk from excellent local food shops, pubs and restaurants, 5-10 mins to RTE at Montrose, St Vincent's Hospital, RDS Ballsbridge and the UCD campus at Belfield, 20 mins to Aviva. For tourists' Dublin - it is within walking distance (a mile and a half) from, arguably, the ‘best’ shopping area of Dublin, St. Stephen’s Green and Grafton Street and is very well served by buses, virtually outside the door. The Dart Railway, by which you can explore the coast and coastal villages, North or South, is under a mile away (Sydney Parade stop). You can walk to the beach at Sandymount in about 20 minutes or take a 5 minute stroll to Herbert Park (feed the ducks?). It is in a perfect quiet position for being near to the centre of Dublin, without the noise, and convenient for trips by car or bus southwards to the sea and mountains.
I provide a pre-loaded LEAP card so that you have no worries about taking a bus as soon as you arrive. I just ask you to top it back up (it usually has 40 Euros on it) when you leave. It can be used by two people. You just tell the bus driver where you are going and put it on a reader by his cab. The fares are discounted with this card.
Golfers will be pleased to find a fine golf course at Elm Park just 10-15 minutes walk away and there are public tennis courts in Herbert Park. The Sunday buffet lunch (booking essential) at the Herbert Park hotel is magnificent.
Theatres and museums abound. Our particular favourites are The Gate Theatre (where the performances are always outstanding), the Museum of Decorative Arts and History in the imposing and vast old Collins Barracks building (great lunches in the cafe there!) and the Dublin City Hugh Lane Gallery in Parnell Square.
There is a comprehensive folder of how things work in the apartment and suggestions of things to do in Dublin. The apartment is prepared for holidays by me, the owner, personally and I am happy to answer any questions by email both before and during your stay. I can only very rarely manage last minute bookings (I arrange my flights to Dublin at least a month in advance) and the minimum stay is one week @ 825 Euros for 2016. except for St Patricks and Easter. Please check the availability calendar to see if the time you want is possible.
I do not have many published reviews here as I only take about 10 weeks of bookings a year and am loathe to badger people to write them unless they enjoy that kind if thing. Therefore, from time to time I add comments taken directly from my physical guest book.

This is not strictly speaking a Senior Adults only Community but due to the sensitivities of the older residents in our block, we prefer to let to mature couples but we may let to responsible younger people who can reassure us they are not here to party so this usually means that we let to retired people, professionals, or academics. This is a quiet building with predominantly retired people so you are requested to be considerate of your neighbours. Parties are not permitted and you are asked not to shout over the balcony, talk loudly if returning late at night, or play excessively loud music at any time. No more than two people can stay in the apartment. Sorry, I do not make any exceptions to this rule. We are confident that you will find everything you need here to make your holiday in Dublin perfect although we can't guarantee the weather! There are a three steps up to the main door. Inside, a lift takes you directly to the door of the apartment. This is situated on the 3rd floor (4th in American terms). It is unsuitable for a wheelchair within the apartment for access to the bathroom. There are handgrips on the bath but none on the wall so it may also be difficult for someone with severe walking or balance problems....moreless

The bed has two new comfortable single mattresses made up as two singles with cosy duvets (otherwise know as an 'Austrian Twin') so although more suitable for couples, it could be used by two very close friends. It is warm in winter with central heating (and an extra storage heater should nights be exceptionally cold) and cool in summer. - There is a large garden shared by other occupants in the block so you can take some folding chairs from the balcony if you want to sit out. There is a daytime caretaker and secure parking. Video door entry. The block is equipped with a sensitive smoke alarm system and you are asked to take care not to set this off by mistake with forgotten cooking! There is a basic hairdryer. Provisions: Unlike most self catering rentals, this apartment is set up for instant living so you feel at home and not deprived of your useful everyday things. You will find a small food store cupboard and provision of things such as soap,loo paper and shower gel to start you off and save you having to rush out on arrival, but this is self-catering and these are starter supplies and you will need to replace as necessary.There is even a drawer with scissors, cellotape and glue and umbrellas,shopping bags and a picnic rug to borrow. The apartment is on Ailesbury Road which runs from Ballsbridge to Donnybrook. This is at the Donnybrook end. With the notable success of The Gathering 2013, many towns and individual clans are planning further get togethers for future years. You too can be a part of something special. The commemoration of the Easter Rising 1916 has already started in 2015 with exhibitions relating to this time. The centrepiece events will take place over the Easter Weekend 2016. In Dublin there are so many activities you can partake of that I can only mention a few, Walking tours with a particular slant, be it history, architecture, literary, interesting museums such as The Writer's Museum, the National Museum of Ireland, the Chester Beatty Collections, quirky places: the crypt of St Michan's Church, historic places: Dublin Castle, Kilmainhaim jail, Guinness's Brewery, Jameson's Whiskey distillery, art at the Museum of Modern Art,the National Gallery, the Dublin City Hugh Lane Gallery, The Book of Kells in Trinity College and much much more. There are rugby matches at the Aviva Stadium ( walking distance). There are Irish dancing and music evenings in pubs, street performers in Grafton Street, numerous theatre, concert and film productions etc. The Dublin Festival Season runs every year from 1st September to 31st October and includes the Dublin Theatre Festival and the Bram Stoker Festival. Bloomsday is on June 16th, (a celebration of the works of James Joyce) the Dublin Horse Show in August (which makes it rather busier and noisier around the area that week but exciting for horse lovers!)
This apartment has proved popular with academics as we are very near the Belfield Campus at UCD and a short ride on a bus to Trinity (or less than a 30 minute walk).

About the owner: From time to time there are outages on any site. If you don't get an answer from me within a few hours through here, you will find my own website in 'Links' near the bottom of my other listing for a Cotswold cottage (above the photos) VRBO Property number 445725 and you can email me through there. Our family live in England but I am Irish and have retained this family apartment as our holiday home as we love Dublin. I clean and maintain it personally between lets (flying over each time from England) and only let it about 10 times a year, jigsawing it in with our family's requirements and with our other 'baby' - a two bedroomed holiday rental in the Cotswolds. You can check us out there by googling Sansome House Cottage as we have lots of reviews for that elsewhere. I try to make this quite different to the average holiday let. It is more like borrowing someone's home with everything you expect in a normal home on hand and I treat my visitors as I would family, not as 'customers'. I am always available on email for help and advice. As I stay in the apartment myself to see to everything for the upcoming guests, I never let back to back and the minimum period of stay is usually ONE WEEK. Consequently I can be flexible about arrival and departure times and lets can start on any day of the week. I can rarely do last minute lets as I have to book my flights in advance so please book early (preferably at least a month in advance) if you want to stay!
Why the Owner Chose Dublin:
I inherited this from my mother and did not want to sell it as it is a perfect location, being quiet and peaceful (there are quite a few retired people living in the block) and yet so near to the centre of Dublin in the nicest area of the city. We reckon we live in a haven of peace here, near the centre, insulated from traffic noise by the many trees surrounding the apartment block so without the 'bustle' of life being too apparent. Plenty of buses nearby though - the buses, including the Aircoach from Dublin airport, stop about 3 minutes walk from the apartment which we find extremely convenient as the town buses run very frequently and the Aircoach runs every fifteen to twenty minutes. We love the views and the light from the big windows. It is cosy in winter, cool in summer. With good transport links, a car is not necessary and even possibly a handicap in the centre but a relatively short drive south finds us in the mountains of County Wicklow, perfect for walking and sightseeing. (Glendalough is about an hour’s drive or you can go there on St Kevin's bus from Dawson Street). West of Dublin, we can visit Castletown House, the National Stud and the Japanese Gardens in Kildare or go north for the prehistoric sites at Tara and Newgrange. The Midlands and the lakes of Westmeath are within a two hour drive from Dublin. We frequently drive a little further on to explore the many towns and villages on the Shannon and have even spent a long day and driven right over to County Galway to wander around Connemara, or a little further south exploring the Burren in County Clare. Our son has done this with rail and bus (we prefer to drive!) but he spent one or two nights in the West to do this. There are many day trips to the four corners of Ireland in organised tours, some of them receiving high praise on travel websites so it is entirely possible to stay here and see a large proportion of the country, coming home to your comfortable home base in the evening.
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
The road through Donnybrook is the main route south to Wicklow and Wexford. Less than half an hours drive and you can be in the Wicklow mountains. Five minutes drive or 20 minutes walk and you can be walking along Sandymount beach or jogging on the promenade. There are beaches all along the coast, reachable by car, by bus or by the Dart Rapid transit system, the nearest station being at Sydney Parade, just one mile away, Events 2015: ;Sept/Oct Dublin Theatre Fest;Sept:Dublin Half Marathon;Nov:Book Fest;concerts, classical and others.Racing.For 2016 Easter Rising Commemorations.May:Writers' Fest;June Food Fest; Bloomsday; August:Horse Show. I have put some points of interest on the map (click 'view guide', below the map, to read about my personal favourites and comments) There are shops, incl. Tesco Express, a few minutes walk from the apartment and a large supermarket a little further away. The buses run very frequently to the centre but we often prefer to walk to St Stephen's Green through very pleasant streets, in under 30 minutes (NB we walk fast so 35 mins would be average pace!) Herbert Park is 5 minutes walk away. Here one can stroll amongst the flowers, feed the ducks on the pond, go jogging or play tennis on the public courts. There are plenty of good places to eat and drink in the area and it is close to two rugby grounds. For horse racing we have three courses within easy reach - Leopardstown (very near), Fairyhouse and Punchestown. Explore the history of Dublin with visits to Christchurch Cathedral, Kilmainham Gaol and Dublin Castle or take one of the many themed guided walks around the city which usually involve a pub or two on the way! Wander around the Temple Bar area for lively bars and quirky shops. When feeling energetic you can hop on a bike with the Dublin bike scheme. Dublin has been rated as being in the top 10 of bike-friendly cities in the world although the demand for the city bikes outstrips the supply.
